quill18 You shouldn't. Stardrive 1 was dropped like a turd and abandoned, and its still being sold with lack of promised features.
***** Did you not go and check why the features weren't there in Stardrive 1? The platform/program he was using for it had its support canceled and it was discontinued. Its not the dev's fault for that.

I have reservations since StarDrive 1 was never completed. Just kind of abandoned in favor of working on this. I have a very dim view of developers that do this.
What do you mean StarDrive was never completed? It was a finished game.
Several things were left incomplete or seriously buggy. It has been up to the community to try to fill these gaps.

Thomas Gideon The platform that the game was built on had it's support dropped, which meant that it was almost impossible for him to deliver on the promised features, which is why he decided that it would be better to spend the money that he earn't on building a new game with all the promised features and better support.
Making Stardrive 2 was his best option IMO.
Look, its in the same category as STALKER for me. It really felt like "thanks for buying this game,. Now we're going to make the game we really want, and abandon support for what you just paid us for."
If the community can be developing a patch for it, then could we at least have any useful AI opponents in our single player game? How about basic features (notice that game type selection that does NOTHING in vanilla StarDrive, yet does SOMETHING in the community mod) working?
Perhaps it was the right decision, but it sure felt like being treated like a chump.
I wish the empire font on the map was the same as their diplomacy font. More variety is always cool. Would be awesome to see the star and planet names in an angry looking evil Samurai Bear font for example :D
I actually found your channel years ago looking for gameplay/tutorials of MOO2. Now it's like one of my favorite games of all time. I don't know how this slipped under my radar though. A high res MOO2? Sign me up!
MOO 3 wasn't a terrible game, it just diverted from the formula of the first two games by having less colony micromanagement and moving the combat focus from individual ships to fleet groupings of various sizes. Exploration, diplomacy, technology advancement, and the starship design feature were all basically unchanged, while ground combat was actually more complex and interesting than in previous games.
Is it strange that I got totally excited when you were able to rearrange the build list by simple dragging the Freighter Fleet to its new position? (looking at you, Civ 5, and your silly little arrows)
I'm getting so many MoO2 vibes right now! Looking forward to the next video!
I want, so much more of this series.
Personally I'd love to see more of this, This is the kind of game that I would get frustrated playing, but would love to watch.

Still forgot this game after Star Ruler 2 was released last week. I mean a game where you can have over 50.000 ships fighting eachother in realtime, or ships the size of planets, kinda gets priority for my attention span :)

I really liked stardrive 1 despite some failed promises and glitches in the game (but i dont mind, for 1 guy, thats an amazing feat of programming) Looks like he has learned a ton and many changes i see here are impressive, would like to see more videos of this ^^
I'd really like to see a full Let's Play of this! (assuming you're having fun with the game). Certainly a game that went straight to my wishlist!
Love the race customisation, its nice to have the themed races but allowing the player to change everything about a race really adds to the game's lifespan. Looks a bit like Distant Worlds too, which can only be a good thing :)
So from RTS to TBS. Looking good in comparison to the first game
This popped up on my radar, I talked to some friends who liked it, read some reviews, then saw Ctulhu worshippers, happy plant people, space bears, angry wulf people, Insects, Machines and more...
And decided to buy it.
After MoO III I told myself I wouldn't set myself up for disappointment by thinking there would ever be a worthy successor to MoO II. You are *dangerously* close to making me reconsider. :p
I was one of the original people who backed StarDrive 1 and honestly, I was super excited for it. Especially the combat system. It was just so, AWESOME. It was exciting, innovative, and just downright fun. Poised to be my absolute #1 4x. But I was burned by the devs as they just jumped into StarDrive 2 without finishing the first.
This game looks a lot like the first, but better, and that's great! I am excited about StarDrive 2. I am just worried about the developer. I love the game concept but I don't know if I would buy it quite yet...
Regardless, I do hope to see one or two more episodes of this. I would love your opinion on the game Quill.
This game..along with other space games...need a special planet like MOO had. Just one. An old dead world that once housed a advanced alien civ that is long gone. But has left advanced tech for you. It was like a Easter egg surprise in every game. Loved it. And I miss it in games like this.
I also miss stuff like dead colonies from Starflight and derelict ships to find like Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday.

I am pretty excited to see how a play-through of this works out. Any chance of you doing a LP of Master of Orion II on a huge galaxy with a custom race of some sort? To this day, I still play MoO2 from time to time. It's a classic!

I have been looking for a successor to Master of Orion II for years!
This game looks quite interesting, but I believe GalCiv3 releases in the next month or so. May hold off & see which appeals to me more.
Hi Quill, i'm really on the fence about buying this. Would love you to do a few episodes so people like me can really see other aspects of the game.
Hope you do a few more vids so people can get a better idea if it's worth the plunge.
I like the game. it has some bugs to work out but still interesting. You plan on doing a whole series? well a small one?
Just a really small remark: I always found it odd in games like Master of Orion (and now this) that an advanced space-faring society employs half it's workforce producing food. Even today it's more like 20%. In more developed nations you see numbers like 1% - 5% of workers in agriculture (including hunting and fishing). Just a tad unrealistic, but of course I know it's just for gameplay reasons and that's okay.
truelazerlight Well more and more scientists actually think that mass produced food (at least the way we're doing it) is unhealthy and unsustainable. It leads to soil loss, less nutritious yields etc. Even the UN's official stance is that we need to "regress" to more local food, grown without pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilisers. It may be that this game has a more realistic view of a healthy future planet.

A few min intot he video it does really look like MoO2, which I still love to play. Just sad that it is not really huge with 100 star systems. Loved to play vs the whole Galaxy :D

You should Play Endless Space, that's a great game.
Mathematically picking the +3 Per worker is superior. Example: if you have 1 workers the base +5 and +1 per worker is optimal because you get +6. 2 as well because 2, you get +5 and +2x1 = 7. But as soon as you jump to 3 workers, you always receive a superior yield. 3 x n vs. (1 x n) + 5. {n = workers.}
TheRedRayBeam however the trade off is that if you dont use any workers there you get nothing, were as the +5 will always be there.

zehh172 Not if the population is on a small world that cannot produce food. They would either all be scientists or workers. And if you're on a small world with high gravity... Get out.
TheRedRayBeam I assume that you also don't get pollution from the flat +5 production. Based on what we saw here and what I can remember from MOO 2 pollution will be a non linear function so more workers doesn't necessarily mean more production.

Races are with same logic behind them. Race perks are about the same. Start game setup is almost identical. Screen organization is nearly identical. ..So they managed to clone MOO2 in just 20years.. Let's hope they don't clone MOO3 too... :)
nikoladd to bad ground battles wernt cloned. I liked the lil battle screen from MOO2. Star Wars Empire at War ground battles would have been a better way to do them.
but to each their own. maybe can get a mod or a patch to add in multiple types of ground battles.

Far future Earth rotates in opposite direction to past Earth, what catastrophic event caused this to happen?
looks like a fantastic 4X but the news network does seem to suck the immersion out of it, I would turn it off should I pick this one up
spikey556 (apart from the first time i played) I find it annoying and it gives the mystery of the first ~200 turns away by telling you everything, I'd like to be able to research the tech to receive these transmission instead.
It should be formatted differently like for instance in GalCiv where it kind of gives an overview after every ten turns about known space only, that would be more realistic
hey quill: I played a lot of stars!(old school play by mail/play by upload) which was a starter for the 4x games in my time. It was the chronic.. the primary focus was to make a race that would make it! of cause all the other admin stuff was there, ship building, planet stuff, but the secondary was the diplo, where you! the gamer, realy made the game shine. this game seem to take on stars!(yes the exclamation point is in the game title) more then orion. of cause there are AI diplo, but thats just for boring game play. What better way to win a game when you know, you have back stabbed a few friends :D... Making a race for end game is crucial!! dont ever give your race recipe to anyone... they will back stab you :D
5:28 quite interesting trait when you think about it, "Holy Land, your homeworld is considered holy":
I mean its quite safe to say that if we are talking about Earth, we humans pretty much by default have the "Holy Land" trait by default, weird we dont in the game by default, since all our religions originate by stories of various holy sites around the continents. I mean if you dont consider Earth with its multitudes of religions based on earth-based holy sites to be "holy", then what would you consider holy?
Wouldn't that also be the case for pretty much most if not all other civilizations which had developed a religion as they evolved their civilization on their starting planet?
I suppose there are exceptions such as the roman pantheon or egyptian beliefs, where it would rather be the systems in Orion or the planet Jupiter and Mars that would be considered holy lands.
Baleur Well, if you consider a place holy. Catholics have all kinds of holy men/women, holy relics (like bones from saints), holy places, chosen/holy people etc. Protestants view that quite critical (god is everywhere, listens to any believer etc.). Also, if you think about the Star Trek, the Federation are pretty secular and wouldn't consider Earth holy. For a holy land/planet to have any effect on morals, your race needs to have a fitting religion and be religious in the first place.
Baleur You are assuming those religions are still dominant in the timeline of Stardrive 2. It's very possible that Earth's population has become much less religious by the time that interstellar travel became an option. Actually there is a strong precedent in reality for this. As people become richer and more educated their dependence on religion to explain the world becomes less. So a much richer more technologically developed Earth could very well be far less religious at the same time.
If superior aliens could have all that shiny tech and still be religious why not humans?

I love how no matter how fast I try to spam ships the AI always seems to have twice my numbers. By the time I had three colonies I had a fleet of three cruisers and four frigates. Two turns after meeting the first race they declare war on me and take my outermost colony in the next turn. When I go to engage them they have a fleet of four cruisers and eight frigates plus a multitude of fighters (before declaring they also had only three colonies so ya).
I can't help but think that the AI is cheating :P
The diplomacy screen is totally The Ur-Quan Masters style! Too bad they don't have hilarious voice acting too although perhaps that would be too much of a rip-off and it's not a story driven exploration game and instead a 4X strategy-empire builder so I guess ti wouldn't make too much sense
I think I've got a problem: It's a 4X, I wants it, no matter how good it is. :/ Luckily, this looks good. :)

OK it's a MOO2 clone. Usually this kind of imitation fails on game mechanics and AI... so is it any good?
25:40 instant awesome immersion. But then it instantly destroys all immersion by saying "Will one of these races claim victory?"
Victory of what? of winning the game? Talk about immersion breaker. Same thing Civ5 did wrong when they had a diplomacy text entry stating "They dislike you because they think you are trying to win the GAME the same way they are!". A 4x strategy game should NEVER admit to being merely a game. It should strive to uphold the suspension of disbelief. Otherwise we might as well just play Chess or Poker, whats the point of the graphics and art assets?
