    this was very helpful, in its simplicity, thank you. I am scared of my dog always seeming to find some type of cooked bone discarded in grass by the sidewalks, I always notice one half second after it's in his mouth, and commanding him to drop only makes him swallow it more quickly most times - normalize muzzles - especially in off-leash areas.

      With my Dobermann I have the same problem. Size 5 was too big, as you said: I returned the item and went for the size 4... but it does not allow her having much room. She picks things in her mouth, so I need a muzzle while I train her not to do so (she is still an adolescent 11 months old)... I am not very happy...

    • @warpdriveby
      @warpdriveby ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There may be a convergence of small details that aren't obvious and when they're alone none cause an issue. Getting the size right requires actually measuring the dogs head and snout, have you been guessing or did you use a tailors tape to get the dimensions. I tried one that used a weight and age guide for GSDs, my guy has a slightly shorter but wider muzzle and wide skull so the first two I tried couldn't get around his head! Since I tried the one, and the smaller one, I figured smaller would be in goldilock's bed right? nope.
      This ones ability to be molded is awesome, I wish they all could be! I have a Ray Allen leather that looks classy, but can come off because it has no collar anchor loop. It doesn't allow him to open his mouth more than ½" either and I like to let him pant away when nervous right? It looks really cool, but I can't rely on it. Anyways, maybe you could think outside the box a bit and get one to stay on? I smear peanut butter in them or can/pouch tuna, or wet food, and let him lick for as long as he will. I don't try to put it on till we've done that for at minimum a full day so 3 session of 5-15 minutes. Short, but only because he already loves the other muzzle and seems to have associated them as I hoped. This method let's me fine tune the straps with a calm sitting or down-staying dog! If he is a Houdini then he probably squirms and twists the second it's on him? You'd not have even a slight chance of fitting it well on a dog who is reluctant to wear one, I know because I worked at a bully breed rescue for a year and had to muzzle many dogs so I could give shots, trim nails, clean ears, wipe bums, brush/wash, and supervise pack play time and solo for dog-aggressive individuals. The calmer and happier they are with the muzzle the easier it is to adjust it to the pup in question, it's also a crucial safety issue for some very aggressive dogs.

    Didn’t come in my dogs size. Too big and it would touch her eyes. One size smaller and it would be too cramped to fit her snout yet even with that if she became extremely anxious due to reactivity she could get her bottom jaw under and get it stuck which would put her in even more of a panic. This is fully tightened down with collar loop.

    Is it safe to leave a dog alone with this on? My dog has severe separation anxiety and if I leave her alone she eats through doors and destroys everything. I can’t keep her in a cage because she breaks out of them and hurts herself. I just want to be able to go to work and not come home to thousands of dollars in damages. If anyone can help I’d appreciate any input given on the matter.

    • @sonjagettel1201
      @sonjagettel1201 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sorry to hear of your situation. Though I can't help with the muzzle, I went through training for my late dog that had terrible separation anxiety. She'd howl and bark, as well as chew the entire couch up, the carpet and pad down to the bare floor, and items with my scent, such as shoes and my work bag. Based on the info from a behaviorist, I started small. If you haven't already, look online for separation anxiety. High level overview - Limited attention 15 minutes before leaving and 15 after coming home. Limited eye contact. Dispassionate coming and going in that 15 minute period. Say the same thing every time you leave. Have your dog bring their favorite item to you when you come home before giving attention (ask them, where's your "baby" or whatever you call it) so they know they need that ready and chew on that instead of other items while they wait for you. Say the same saying every time you leave, like "you be good, mama be back, mama's got to go to work". Leave and lock the door. If the dog doesn't bark, howl, or scratch, etc. immediately open the door and praise the dog. Work your way up to closing the door for more seconds, then until you can walk down the driveway, then until you can be out longer, etc. NEVER punish your dog as you may know. It will increase the anxiety. Be sure not to lavish attention prior to leaving because your dog will miss you even more nor lavish attention when you return because your dog will come to know that this wonderful reunion is going to happen. Hope this helps. May be info you already know. Worked for my dog and have been told it helps most dogs.

      My dog only tried to remove it once or twice when I put it on out of pure anxiety so I gave him a quick cuddle/pat and that was all it took to de-escalate his anxiety. I get where you are coming from, and if it is a recurring problem (the dog trying to remove it) then you might want to treat it differently by giving a reward when he is relaxed with it on.

    • @rumblelloyd9491
      @rumblelloyd9491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The point of the treat isn't to stop the dog from removing the muzzle. It's to try to get the dog putting their own head in the muzzle for the first few times in order to avoid a bad initial experience. Some dogs are super sensitive, and if they have a bad initial experience with something, you'll have to battle with them every time.
      I've used that same tactic with horses and halters. You don't want an animal that's going to grow into a 1500lb monster to hate halters.
