You nailed it. I'm 83 yrs. old and ride a 2020 FXST with the M8 107. Its the close cousin of your bike also with the 3.5 gal. tank. I'm a conservative rider and most of my riding is done in the country. It doesn't matter if I ride 55 mph or 70 mph, my bike will deliver me 57 mpg riding solo and 55 riding with my wife. It does it every time. Love it!! And yeah, after a couple of hours I'm ready for a stretch.
I agree 100% I used to tour on a Sportster with 130 mile range which Lasted about 2 hours on the interstate. I welcomed the break every 2 hours. On really long trips I carried a half gallon of gas in a tiny gas can in the saddle bag. I never had to use it for my own bike but I have rescued another motorcycle on the side of the road.
I was on my way home from a trip and had some set backs. Had to make it from Indiana to New York in a day. Riding at a good clip burned some gas. Twice the gas stops would have me riding a lot more hours. I didn’t want to but I’d rather have it and not need it than need it… When everything is going good I’m off the bike same as you. But if you’re going to road trip, it’s not always going to go good. Especially in the desert or some screwy place haha! Great vid! I was curious about the street bob range
My rear is ready for a break every 2 hours. So therefore, a 3.5 gallon tank is plenty. I just added cruise control to my 2024 StreetBob to give my right hand a needed rest.
So what do you do when the fuel station is 200 miles apart or can be more, here in Australia. Sure, we take regular rest stops but not always for fuel.
Have a Fat Boy 114. I'm about 2-3 hours between stops. Still fuel left. But on a soft tail. My ass is done and numb and I need to walk around for a few before I get back on the trip. The 3.5 tank on your bike... that's plenty between stops
26 yr old male here with a bike that has a 3.2 gal tank (40-45mpg) and I can say solidly that my breaks are determined directly because of my gas mileage. I’m in good physical shape so it’s nothing for me to ride around 3 hours without getting off the bike. And if I’m in town my bike will deliver 3 hours with no breaks. But highway riding I’m stopping about every hour to hour and a half because of the fuel capacity. Not complaining, just answering the question posed at 3:00.
@@TheMotoJawn time flies when you’re having fun lol. I completely agree with your premise though. With good enough fuel economy, a 3.5 gallon tank is wholly adequate.
I have the 2023 114 street bob and my dad has the 2023 street glide 114 we have to fill up at the same time when we ride. Even tho his tank is bigger. They burn through the tank at the same rate.
200 miles on my 5 gal tank, only way to get to far places. when we ride with 3.5 gallon tanks they definitely slow us down with more breaks. this only matters when your doing 400 plus miles trip often enough for it to matter. also if you have full suspension you'll be able go further and a proper windshield that blocks enough. if you want to do long miles its better when ur bike is set up to do it, you don't "need it" you can toughen it out but you'll pay for it with soreness and pain.
I understand what youre saying, I ride for around 2hrs when I'll stop to have stretch/food etc, but, I may not want to fill up at every stop and every stop isn't always at a petrol (gas) station. Regards from Australia 🦘
I got a new FXST and am keen to hear your thoughts on gas mileage once you put a tune on the bike. I agree with everything you're saying, and I personally stop every 100 miles max.
I live in Philly also and city driving really cuts down the gas mileage. I hate gassing the tank. To me it's one of the biggest hassles of riding. That's probably the main reason I traded in my 20 Bob for a 23 Lowrider with it's 5 gallon tank. I got tired of filling the tank after crossing the bridge to go to the shore and having less than 1/2 a tank when I got there. Now I can go down and back with just one fill up. On a side note, I recall year's ago when I was lost in Bucks County and pulled into a station on empty. I had to deal with the owner bitching about how much he hates cycles because he doesn't make anything. If I had any gas at all I would have left that station and tried to find another one.
@Thatguy-fl6yr I've seen videos of tank swaps. The final cost including paint and in my case labor would be well over $1000. That would obviously be the cheaper alternative if this was your only goal and didn't care about getting an over all much nicer bike which the Lowrider is
I ride the same bike just with more modifications, no windshield. I ride at an average speed off about 120kmp. I road a classic Road king for years, street, bikes, dirt, bikes, and all of the sorts. I can say at 28 years old there’s no real physical limitation. I get 120 miles on the tank, my new 5 gallon tank is being painted now I will make a video once it’s completed along with the other fender tombstone/teardrop design. I cant even describe how excited I am for this tank.. when I go on a ride, most places I go there are 110 150 miles between stations. Just saying you asked what kind of rider needs the big tank. Oh yea and not to mention i put 10k on my bike in five months! I made it to 182 mills when i pulled in to the station my bike died before getting to the pump. My road king i went 310 miles without stopping and that also included a rain storm.
It depends on whether I’m riding on the freeway or country roads. It also depends on the temperature. There are times I ride for 3 1/2 hours. Now, that would be when I’m riding an average of 60 mph and the temperature is between 50 and 80. If the temperature is 90 something, I will stop for a drink more often. On the Interstate going to Sturgis, I’m riding between 80 and 90 mph, and it is usually pretty hot too. So, I’m probably stopping at 2 hours.
I did a 1200 mile trip and the bike worked perfect for me just when I needed to stop for a rest I was always near a gas station so as you said I did not feel any different from having 5 gallon tank.
Even on my regular Z900 that gets about 47 mpg, I bring a 2 gallon Rotopax on top of a H&B sportrack. Took it on a 1.5k mile trip and brought extra fuel just in case the station was closed. In the middle of the Nevada desert anything goes. My new LRS I'm not sure what it gets. Not broken in yet, but seems a little thirsty. Hate to put a rack and Roto on the back. In Winnemucca Nev., seen a guy on an 883 with 2 Rotos coupled together. Those little peanut tanks aren't for long distance. This guy was like Bronson from the 60's. Cool bike tho. 2 hours is about it for me.
23 114 bob. On long rides I need a break before I’m running out of gas anyway. The only thing that makes me consider a 5 gallon tank swap is that I’ll be going stage 2 soon.
So the only time you need a 5 gallon tank is if you are doing club stuff like going from Washington to Texas you need the extra gallons because sometimes they push further I've road for 4 hrs straight on my dyna superglide and was glad I had extra gallons if I didn't I would be refueling with my spare gas can while riding with the pack
My 11 street bob with 96 could do 50 mpg if I went 50 mph, but I usually go 75 to 80 and still get 33 to 37 depending on wind. I start hunting gas at 120 miles, but my legs and butt need a break by then. Longest I have stretched it is 160 miles.
Man I love this bike I got the black with the orange graphics it is my first Harley I only road it home from dealer and the next day to work it rained the last to day hard but I'm riding Saturday for sure
With my feet up on my hog works engine guards, and cruse control on with my 2023 fat bob .I need more gas storage . And if I am ripping it surly isn’t getting good fuel economy
Aside from the mileage range, aesthetically speaking the tank is just too small for the bike as well. Go back to the 4.8 from the Dyna's and you got something with range and manly.
I USED TO LIVE OUT WEST WHERE ROADS ACROSS THE DESERT CAN PUSH GAS RESERVES TO THE LIMIT ON A MOTORCYCLE . THE STREET BOB IS OK FOR AN EAST COAST BIKE . I LIVE IN OHIO NOW AND I HAVE STAGE 2 STREET BOB 114 AND I LIKE IT FOR THE AREA I LIVE IN NOW BUT IF I EVER TOOK IT BACK OUT WEST I WOULD FIND A 5 GAL. TANK TO FIT IT . I WAS TOLD THERE ARE 5 GAL. Now that Izzi is seventeen years old were not running thousand mile days but we used to all the time and have ridden from ohio to LA in two days. ( about 2400 miles)
I've got the Fat Bob with 114 and 3.5gal tank. Max miles per tank was 220miles. But that was 2up 55mph flat ground down along the coast for a couple hours straight. Highway cruising I'm around 160ish. My regular ripping around country roads and mountains 130miles. I've got 4 bikes right now, and this one has the biggest fuel tank at 3.5 gal, and I've never had the issue of running out of gas on any of them. Only a fool runs his bike outta gas.
