It's mind boggling that this channel hasn't gone huge yet. Every video I expect to see tens of thousands of new subscribers. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think this is uniquely well done.
I haven't watched the whole thing yet but instantly I'm reminded of something that the Persian king Xerxes (tall bald dude in the movie 300) allegedly did during the Greco-Persian Wars. The Greek historian Herodotus (the primary source for much of the context) describes (who knows if true) how while the Persians were preparing for their invasion of Greece they built some bridges over parts of the water from Turkey, the bridges were destroyed in a storm, and Xerxes got mad and had the builders beheaded, and: "Xerxes was infuriated when he learned of this. He ordered that the Hellespont (straits of Dardenelles) was to receive 300 lashes under the whip, and that a pair of shackles was to be dropped into the sea. And I've also heard that he sent others to brand the Hellespont. In any case, he instructed his men to say barbarian and insolent things as they were striking the Hellespont: 'Bitter water! Your master is imposing this penalty upon you for wronging him, even though you had suffered no injustice from him, and King Xerxes will cross you whether you like it or not! It is for just cause, after all, that no human offers you sacrifice. You are a turbid and briny river!' "
HEY I was just watching a video called "Cats In Medieval Paintings Looked Really Creepy" by the channel Art Deco and at 6:45 they mention writing letters to rats!
You, sir, are an amazing an amazing story teller. I suffer from pain on a regular basis. When I need some light-hearted distraction to get through my house cleaning and such, you have helped me so much more than you know. I could listen to the tales you tell for hours. So much love and thanks. If you ever find your travels here in Virginia, let me know. I love to explore forest trails and graveyards with my husband. History is amazing. ❤ Your storytelling ability is Epic!
What's interesting is that we humans are still sort of doing this! A pest control company came by our home last year and in their sales pitch they said "if you get our treatment, those mice will go to your neighbors instead!" Effectively, it's a threat implying if we didn't get the treatment and every other neighbor did, guess where the rodents will go? I wonder if this is just the way we think about rodents?
It looks like you have a friend out for a casual run n the woods at 6:34, between your head and the excerpt, from the left side of the tree directly in between. Looks like a lady out for a jog or maybe she's excited to hear the rat lore.
Man, I have never heard of this old lore before, love it. I find this extra funny because it just...fits so well, energy wise, with this fun song we made a couple months back. It feels oddly fitting, like the energy of the rats being sent back and forth from those two farms or maybe the energy of the angry rats after receiving a bad note. Idk, I just think it's a funny connection. If you wanna check it out it's called fear the plague rat haha. Have you ever heard about the mice/rats that destroyed a bunch of farms in australia?
I love this! and am going to use it for mice. I'll be taking the cordial letter approach so as not to move them to anger. Thank you and keep the awesome videos comin!
I've heard of other folklores from Europe about giving someone rats, so this may play into this. I'm also wondering if there was lead in what they used to write the letter, or maybe mercury in the paper? I know a lot of chemicals used to be commonplace and so by writing a "letter" to the rats, they ate some of the paper/ink (because of the lard) and then died. To explain it away to the kids, they say the rats "went to live on another farm".
There was an idea that other animals lived like littler versions of people. It was a counter viewpoint to the development of the theory of evolution. However by the end of the century this viewpoint was consigned to the nursery, and of course the 20th century made everything duller and ugly.
That original article was written by "Neal Dow." I was a little shocked and amazed to see that name. I used to live in Chico, California where there is a Neal Dow Elementary School and Neal Dow Avenue named after the famous prohibitionist. Chico was founded by a big prohibitionist, so a lot of stuff is named after prohibitionist leaders. I wonder if it is the same person.
That was funny, I enjoyed it. Now I have a story for you about a scorpion. I was in a cheap hotel in Mexico when I saw a big scorpion in my room. I was so afraid of it, I spent most of the night thinking as LOUD as I could think about how wonderful the nearby empty lot was for scorpions, how much good food, great homes, lots of scorpion sex, I imagined that scorpion all the way out of my room, out of the hotel and into that joyous empty lot. In the morning when the maid cleaned, I told her to be careful and not get stung. She cleaned and searched as much as there was in that small room,. But the scorpion was gone.
Never thought of serving rats eviction papers.

Glad you like it! I definitely hope to get there one day!
So true. Deserve a million subs🎉
NH native here, been spreading your channel to everyone I know!
The thought of rats reading those letters and their various reactions has me cracking up 😂
A good diss track is undeniably powerful, regardless of which species it happens to be aimed at
Love this story teller. He will make a great grandpa someday. He should write a kids illustrated book. I would read it to my grandchild

I love following down the rabbit hole of a very obscure history topic.
This is awesome. I wonder if it works with other things other than rats, like undesirable roommates.
that rhyming rat poem was actually pretty good

"Rough on rats, rough on the causes of rats"

Great, now that I have these skills, I'll *never* have an opportunity to use them. Come and get me rats! I fear not thine wicked tails!

Shawn woods. Rat man would love this.
I want to know how the rats learned to read. Is there a rat's Hogwarts we don't know about? That would be a great story. 😂

I must second this. As soon as I heard “it actually worked” I thought “Yup, they ate the letters and died from the ink, didn’t they?”
Weirdly I have heard this tradition in relation to ant infestations here in Britain 😅
Great video! keeping it real with the camcorder aspect ratio while filming on a blackmagicpocket or something in 1440p+
Thought this was a euphemism for writing to the jokesters in Washington
I love that, after making this video, you will have a binder full of rat letters just hanging around your house somewhere, lol.

Well we've clearly lost the art of letter writing

6:28 Neal Dow
6:42 General Dow
6:54 Mary Larcom Dow
Was everybody in America called Dow?
Have you ever considered publishing papers or a book or something on all this research you do?
Another fun video. Thanks :)

That’s bizarre!
Gona have to send some rat dismissals forms to the government
I bet John Gotti wanted to write Sam Gravano one of these letters 😂
Have you heard about the tradition of telling the bees? If someone in your family dies, you need to tell the bees so they can attend the funeral.
I wonder if it works for scorpions?
If only you could find a way to make spiders disappear! I hate those creepy, crawly things 👢🕸🕷
Hope this works with mice or my neighbor is really going to be mad at me !!! Turned her on to your work and daughter too.
Does this work for termites?
Funny thing is most people didn't know how to read or write in those days soooooo......
Duh, not grease - peppermint oil. BTW - it didn't work
