This recipe works well - one thing I learned though: Don't use cup-a-soup that has noodles in it. The rats will just paw through the mix looking for all the noodles. The mixture still works, but it takes longer (a few days instead of 1 day) and they make a bigger mess. I plan to vary the approach by making a version with cake mix, then when that's done, peanut butter powder, before cycling back to soup mix as the attractant.
HaHa actually they are not too bad when you are on a farm and just need a hot quick hit with a few slices of bread like but you need 2 sachets to make it thick enough. lol
We've had so much rain this year that the rats moved into our chicken coup and duck house. They've bitten the chickens, eaten eggs and attacked chicks in the brooder. It's heartbreaking. We respect wildlife and won't use poison baits. Considered the water bucket system but concerned about finding young birds in the buckets. This brilliant, simple and straightforward concoction is EXACTLY what we've been needing! Love the simple things. Will substitute the plaster of paris with baking soda because we need to save our hens, chicks and eggs ASAP! Will follow up with you on our results! Thank you!
Follow up: IT WORKS!! We combined equal parts baking soda and flour, then divided the mixture into 2 containers. In one we added cinnamon powder and the other coco powder. Each placed near entry/exit holes with water nearby. Took about a week for them to consume it all, but it's clear the vermin numbers have dropped! Birds are happy and we're back to collecting more eggs than eggshells! We plan on trying different flavors each month. Ramen noodle seasoning packet or powdered sugar sprinkled just enough to add a scent and some flavor. Just to be clear... THIS WORKS! 👏🙌
That’s great. I will try this. I don’t have chickens but I have fruit trees. Orange, a small banana one, and huge grape vines. Last year when the grapes came in the mice would feast all over the grapes at night. Birds and squirrels too but not to the same extent. And they’re also not as disgusting as rats. Do you still use this method when encountering vermin? Also, did you ever try peanut butter? I keep hearing it’s rats’ favorite and the smell is super pungent. Thanks for sharing, I will try this!
Thank you so much for yr video. This definitely works + just like u said; u see white powder everywhere the next day! I have literally tried everything + spent over $900 Aussie dollars b4 finding this. Making fresh batch now for the new ones that bred up. Your solution was the 1st break I've had from these filthy rats in 14 months. Cheap + effective 👍
I have used this system before with great success but I work in smooth peanut into the dry ingredients and I use gloves the whole time I mix or touch the ingredient and form it into balls. So there are no human smells. the said balls I hide in wide plastic conduit piping (big enough for a rat but not ok for bigger animals)
Hi yes I've seen it done that way before, this is quicker but I think if you use multiple ways would be better to get them all. I use all sorts of ways as I have 150 chickens so have to keep on top of the things. Think I will try making some bait balls Thanks
Good stuff, sugar and sometimes baking soda works fast too. Rats are familys and once killed another family will move in so be pro active and this stuff is really good. Must be plaster of paris not drywall mix many make that mistake
I have always used Plaster of Paris mixed with Flour and packet Soups 👍 my Grandad showed me this as a child, 100% works 🐀=⚰ i still always use Rat Boxes to put the Bait in, and check every day, and refill as it goes down 😉👍
Yeah, it works and is less dangerous to other animals, but it works for me and as I keep chickens I am using all different methods so to keep the rats taking different baits from homemade to pro passions. I do have a friend who gets me stronger stuff, but again keep switching and placing all over the farm to keep them down. Thanks for watching and confirming it works. Top Guy thanks Craig
@@utubestalker.dotcom Jesus you will have rat statues all over the garden and it will last for dome time hope it's fast setting ..? test a little to see how fast it sets..? Good luck
I have found about 10-20% of my rats are too smart to approach a regular trap of any kind, I found that by covering a Rat trap with blown in attic insulation to camouflage the trap, I get them all. I only leave the peanut butter on the trigger showing. That hides the mechanical trap and they walk right onto the covered trap and it gets them. I discovered this with a surveillance video camera I used to watch. I had seen that the smart ones could distinguish any trap type. When I hid it with insulation, it fooled them every time.
My old Italian relatives, who raised chickens, used a mixture of 50-50 plaster of paris (the dry powder) and polenta (a type of corn meal) to solve their mouse and rat problem. I think that the plaster of paris sets up when it reaches their stomach and kills them.
I have tried flour and baking soda and for some reason they don't eat it and I've tried peanut butter and baking soda they eat it but I put it out there for a month straight and I didn't see anything results I'm trying the plaster of Paris right now and they are going nuts over it fingers crossed 🤞
When I was a kid there was a chicken farmer my dad knew who used a fifty fifty mix plaster of Paris and icing sugar for rats. That was over fifty years ago, just goes to show, the old ideas are the best. Your mix sounds a lot less sticky, I'll have to give it a try.
Hi I keep saying this to my friends what did you think they used before any of these fancy brands came out milking us with small amounts and high prices for other positions that's even if you don't have to get pest control in. Its quite amazing what the old boys know. My mate has lots of old ways of doing things like spraying your whole coop with bleach. You have to do it early on a summer's morning when it's warm so that by the time hens go back in it's dry. That's if you don't have another coop
Another commenter has already mentioned this, so my comment isn't original... but always wear a face mask when handling Plaster of Paris. Don't inhale the powder!
You have to keep on top of them and keep changing the poison etc as they are clever and know what to and what not to eat once a couple of their pals die
It works great, but you should skip the plaster of Paris for a few days and feed them the flour for a bit to get a taste for it, then you can be sure they'll grab it with the plaster. Make little paper wraps they can carry away to scoff , then you know they'll get a good dose, when the wraps don't disappear, you know the rats have.
Your add of soup is brilliant and I was thrilled I could by-pass dough balls. They were careful to get into it but obviously loving it now. But ding-dong, lol, new rats? I'm only seeing brown rat and figure it's more than 1 with 3 peanut butter lids spread about, emptied. LOL, white dust left the trail. Unreal! I also used a Peppermint oil concoction. Oooo, they don't like that at all, hehe. I'm encouraged having come across your vid, again. I just came in from the garage to review my rat research becoming doubtful. The vid previous to yours talked about the dough balls and how they'd dry in the gut. Your results would indicate gut fluids in the animal would be enough to activate the Plaster of Paris. Gosh, I love the simplicity of just setting out powder. I've not given up. I need to find how they're getting in! Thank you for sharing....I enjoyed your vid, lots!
Honeslty if they are not caught in a trap or cage then any poison they are going to go back to the nest and if you can find the nest then you could remove them. But I have never smelt a dead rat after being poisoned and I own a chicken farm. `I only smell them when I lift up the board or whatever they are hiding under, as they do find really tight areas to go and die. Yes, there is a possibility but if you did smell a little because if it was a strong smell you could literally follow your nose. So if only a little smell it will be gone before you know it. People always scare people by saying that it will be like having a dead body in your room, but that's just not true honestly they are scaremongering. Go ahead and get rid of the rats. Good Luck
Kill the rats by whatever means works. Otherwise a few will become hundreds in no time. KC is right, a dead rat is far better than a one that's alive and breeding.
@@KC-cx7ev If you find the dead rat, using gloves.....put it out where the ravens or hawks can eat the meat. Doubt that they would eat the stomach contents. But they mostly take care of any rat problems I have....just a couple around that I wanted to get rid of right now, before there are more.
This works!. I watched this last week after I had rats around my bins. I had tried everything, nothing worked. I put this down under cover with the complimentary water dish. Result!, rats face up every fucking where!. And none ever since.
lol....Cwazy! I can't hardly imagine seeing what you saw, hehehe, and I'm encouraged by your post. I'd way rather they travel back to high grass and stay there;0) Last night I topped up my dishes, then dropped another. Today I mixed in some sugar, the mix already containing bullion. I may leave out a dish of water but prefer to keep this simple. Hehe, the beauty of it all.;0) Cheers!

Greg- I had almost given up hope. This miserable little sob avoided live traps, snap traps, zapper box, and bait boxes. FINALLY….. after consuming your mixture with a cream of chicken cup of soup ( with no noodles as suggested by another viewer) I have not heard or seen anything for three days. This vermin must of learned quickly because the others perished by all the other means mentioned. Peanut butter, nut fruit bars, bacon, Nutella, and muffin mix-sugar-baking soda mix avoided by this last one. Clearly consumed a larger amount of the mixture and had a small side order container nearby with water as suggested. Thank you for sharing!

Make sure you remove any other food stuff and also leave some water next to the mix as it makes them thirsty which in turn makes it set faster. Good luck

I wondered the same thing! Another youtuber uses equal parts baking soda and Jiffy cornbread with honey mix. He says rats can't belch or fart but other animals that would eat the rats are okay.
Chickens have an organ called the gizzard. Chickens dont have teeth, so they eat sand and gravel that stays in the gizzard, where muscle contractions grind their food with the gravel to produce small digestible pieces. The plaster of paris wouldnt be a problem as it too would be ground into small enough pieces.
Lol Northeast UK and yep try it just leave it where it cannot get wet and for few days make sure no other food sources around and it will wype them out.
Hi Richie yeah sometimes they can come in force and then other times they don't seem to be about as much. Like I was overrun with them but now not so much, maybe it's because I keep switching around using different methods to kill them off. Hope you have good luck Richie
I like the idea. Going to give it a try. Your presentation reminded me of a different movie, Mike Meyers in Goldmember when his character Fat Bastard shouted “GET IN MY BELLY!” Cheerio!
No problem hope it solves your rodent problem the soup just helps with the smell of it and also the taste, instead of just the flour etc thanks for the comment
OMG, it this helps me get rid of rats, I will be singing your praises! I've tried everything and these darn rats are so smart they avoid everything I've bought:( I thought of using antifreeze, which is how I found your site. LOVE the accent - where are you from?
Northeast, Teesside and yes it does work they eat it up and then they cannot pass it always put some water next to it so they drink it straight after as their mouths will be dry and it will also work faster. It works honestly really well 😀😉
I’m thinking I could make batches with different flavors. They make a peanut butter powder I can try, chicken or beef bouillon, powder drink mix, cocoa etc. I find they learn pretty quick what to avoid. A smorgasbord of different flavors may help fool them for longer.
When one rat sees a dead rat, the live rat will smell the whiskers of the dead rat. The live rat the stays away from the last thing the dead rat ate. That is why when farmers use Warfarin blood thinner to kill rats the farmer must keep changing up the different baits.
@@binebum1 would being torn up by a falcon, owl, or hawk be better then? Indoors or house mice no longer have live predators because cats have lost their instincts and grown fat.
@World of my Hellcat Ants Do you need to dress up as Ronald McDonald to do this.🤡 Before I put out the mixture I would ask the rats, “do you want fries with that.”
I've heard of that before. It's great. I do need to say that it will hurt any dog that eats it . I just don't believe a dog will eat any powdery substance they start sneezing. So it should be safe.
Some cayenne pepper sprinkled on or in the feed will also deter rats, while the chickens won't notice it. Rats can't separate the flour from the plaster of Paris, and eat both. They like it so much, I mix up more and set it out for them.
Does it work in high humidity areas? I live in the U.S. southeastern states, coastal Alabama to be precise. Even in the winter we have higher humidity than most of the rest of the country all year long. I've tried the potato flakes and baking soda but didnt add the cup of soup. I had few takers. But it killed the ones that did. I may try adding the cup of soup
Hey Wow thanks We are def going to try this. Something about your accent makes me beleive this is going to work ;) Favourite moment: "Sorry about the Cockerels" LOL Cheers mate!
I have a raccoon problem. They visit my backyard every night and cause a real mess. I've tried everything to repel them. Electronic repellers, coyote urine, various spays. I think I've finally found the solution! I bought a 2 pound jar of Habanero pepper powder. Very nasty stuff. I sprinkled this around the periphery of my back yard to include any entry point for the critters. From the first night after the application I have been free of visits from my furry friends. First raccoon free nights in weeks. It seldom rains here in Utah at this time of the year. So I think if I just do a reapplication 2- 3 times a week and after a rain this might be my solution.
Well done all you can do is try, you may want to search for old tales of how people got rid of those things. I have found plenty of old ways to deal with things like red mite in chicken coops etc, I mean they had to use something before all these new products came to market. Turns out bleach at really high concentration works awesome, so keep an eye out for what they used back in the day. Good Luck
You have to keep using the differnet things to keep onto of them I think the cheap rat poison is pretty terrible and doesnt take long for them to be imune so to speak
Hope so, we're using that mix on a rat problem. In some of our trays, I also added a little powdered sugar-will compare the sweetened and unsweetened batches and see what attracts them better.
@@thesmallfarmerlife I will add the sup though, that will attract them, no doubt. If you have moles or pocket gophers put a stick of juicy fruit gum in their burrows. They can't pass it, and they love the smell and taste.
@@thesmallfarmerlife I have heard male urine discourages them. I know it sounds gross but save your urine and pour it on their mole mounds. They do also make mole traps that the experts use. You can also hire someone to rid your field of the pesky moles, but they just use traps. But they do it all at once with a dozen or more traps to be sure to get them all.
@World of my Hellcat Ants We have the big Norway rats too. They are smart; that' how they got so big. Formidable opponents, too big for rat traps. Pretty sure I heard them laughing when I set them out. They also like red licorice and peanut butter.
They dont go for it if you are worried about hens getting at it, place it inside a piece of downpipe the rats can get at it but hens can not. Also make sure no other feed is available for the rats to eat
I have used this mix, my problem. when they first find it they go mad for it, kills lots of rats. BUT there are always some that know it killed other rats and after a few weeks, they will not go near it. they are so clever. I have taken all food in for the night swept up and they will walk past the bait. they seem to be able to tell new rats as well. and I hate them with a vengeance. the damage they do!!!
This is why you have to keep swapping your methods of poison younger rats are easier to get as they are not as wise. But just keep switching it around from one to another. It's more about trying to keep their numbers down as they are always around or one or two left here and there and that's all you need. I have killed thousands over the years but I go for the big kill once then leave it to see how its done, go out with torch on a night see what I can see remove all feed and then try to use something else to mop up the rest until I see nothing when I go out with a torch. If I see the odd one or two I use an air rifle on those to headshot and they are stone dead
I was told once that the old rats send out the younger ones to search for food and if they find some the old ones won’t eat right away. They will only eat after the young survive. if the young die they leave it alone . You have to feed them first then at some point you poison them . Hit them hard and fast and you will get them all
@@juliaforsyth8332 That is very important. If rats smell human scent on the bait they'll stay away from it. I always wear latex gloves when preparing it.

@@thesmallfarmerlife lol
Gatorade bottles I used in the past for mice, but also worked on rats, since they'll just chew their way in, if they do not fit.
Good stuff, sugar and sometimes baking soda works fast too. Rats are familys and once killed another family will move in so be pro active and this stuff is really good. Must be plaster of paris not drywall mix many make that mistake
Yeah I use the baking soda also I use all types to keep hundreds of chickens so have to keep switching them around to keep on top of them
I have always used Plaster of Paris mixed with Flour and packet Soups 👍 my Grandad showed me this as a child, 100% works 🐀=⚰ i still always use Rat Boxes to put the Bait in, and check every day, and refill as it goes down 😉👍
Yeah, it works and is less dangerous to other animals, but it works for me and as I keep chickens I am using all different methods so to keep the rats taking different baits from homemade to pro passions. I do have a friend who gets me stronger stuff, but again keep switching and placing all over the farm to keep them down. Thanks for watching and confirming it works. Top Guy thanks Craig

Little garden rat gnomes! 😅😅
Recipe that's been around a good while in rural Ireland. Well done.!
This was a great tip, I suggest for those where the rats aren't taking it to add another couple of Cup-A-Soup sachets to make it more tempting !
My old Italian relatives, who raised chickens, used a mixture of 50-50 plaster of paris (the dry powder) and polenta (a type of corn meal) to solve their mouse and rat problem. I think that the plaster of paris sets up when it reaches their stomach and kills them.
Death by Constipation and dehydration.
I also thought of polenta when I saw a video that mixes baking powder and jiffy corn bread mix.
You don't need to use plaster of Paris..just use flour and baking soda, works just as well
Cornmeal also.
Yup, they get smart after a while and won't eat the baking soda though.
why flour?
Well I tried that for 10 days and it did nothing but make everything worse... A LOT worse!
Thanks mate.i will try that.finally someone who showed what to do instead of listening to themselves talk.
Another commenter has already mentioned this, so my comment isn't original... but always wear a face mask when handling Plaster of Paris. Don't inhale the powder!
Thanks mate i will try this today , i have never seen so many on the farm
You have to keep on top of them and keep changing the poison etc as they are clever and know what to and what not to eat once a couple of their pals die
I’ve got rats just dyin to try this!👍☠️
@Julia57 just me yes. Problem is if you can’t find the dead ones , just follow your nose.
Poor rats...there last meal (cup of soup) killed them. And just a coincidence, it had to be chicken soup.
Bad Luck!
imagine what a pot noodle would do, is there such a thing as raticide?
I’m just worried I’m gonna have dead rats everywhere. That could lead to some seriously bad odors if they die in places I can’t get to.
Good Luck
A dead rat is better than a live breeding rat that increases the rodent population. I have used a mixture of oats & plaster of paris for decades.
@@antiquegirl6505Interesting thought!!!

Whatever is chowin' down on the buffet set out is seems to keep coming back for more and no dead bodies. Truth be told, I'm not looking forward to that experience. I'd way rather they travel back to high grass and stay there;0)
Last night I topped up my dishes, then dropped another.
Today I mixed in some sugar, the mix already containing bullion. I may leave out a dish of water but prefer to keep this simple. Hehe, the beauty of it all.;0)

@@HauntedBranch Yes, it did. I needed to use far more of the cup o soup for the smell & the flour does need replacing quite often as it gets a bit manky.

They learn fast and make me paranoid, thinking they're wizards of something, who have come to invade my garage.
When one rat sees a dead rat, the live rat will smell the whiskers of the dead rat. The live rat the stays away from the last thing the dead rat ate. That is why when farmers use Warfarin blood thinner to kill rats the farmer must keep changing up the different baits.

Some cayenne pepper sprinkled on or in the feed will also deter rats, while the chickens won't notice it.

Good Luck
