I would thoroughly recommend Beccles to anybody and I hope I have captured the spirit of the place in this video. If you did enjoy it please give the video a 'like' and please leave a comment as I do appreciate the contact. I usually include the landing back at Nayland but I aim for a maximum of a 20 minute vlog each week.
Yes, you have captured the spirit of the place. I flew there yesterday from Nuthampstead and was charmed by it and shall go back. Incidentally, I returned via Clacton and Wratting Common and took the opportunity to take a look at the Hill. Must call in some time. Best wishes.
Looking outside here at 1650 hrs local and the rain continues its relentless assault , but your notification comes through and certainly throws a ray of Sunshine my way . What a lovely set up at Beccles , and a friendly bunch too making for a very welcoming time . That new runway surface is a beauty . I trust you had a uneventful flight back to Nayland . All my best wishes Tim .
Murky sort of a flight back into a hazy sunshine and I might start next week off with the landing back. Our nights are pulling out but yours are pulling in. Shame about the rain but the truth is we could do with it here as the pastures, crops and gardens are all very dry.
Very enjoyable to watch with my tea this morning! I always like to see the difference between the UK and US experience. Not too many Ercoupe's over there, and not many Jodel's over here.
thanks for watching James. It is interesting to see the difference isn't it. I suppose it is because the States are so large but people do tend to fly higher in their cruises?
What a top vid, looks like a great place to visit. It's so nice to see airfields busy and attempting to recover from the financial pain of C-19. Best bits, the look of the cake, and the two Jodels together 😃. Have a good week Tim and happy flying
@@JodelFlyer we are my friend. Ramadan here so life here a bit quite, but all ends this coming Thursday/Friday so will be like Christmas. Lots of fun and frolicks... Though C-19 is raising its head again so we will see. Government here very robust in dealing with things. Outside of they we look forward to next weeks edition.
Great video, thanks for taking us along. Beccles is somewhere I have never been but seeing your video it is definitely on the list to visit, so refreshing to see investment in the airfield.
Another excellent video Tim, many thanks. I still haven't visited Beccles, but hopefully this year when I finally get my class rating back. Also good to see Southwold from the air - home of Adnams of course!
Thnaks Tim for this travelblog, Beccles looks a great airfield to visit, welcoming and accommodating. It is great to see a GA airfield moving forward like this we need more like Beccles.
Same time every week, coffee and 20 minutes of the Jodel Flyer. I really like the unobstructed camera underneath, I think I will look at mounting mine like that. Beccles is looking really nice I haven't been for a couple of years but I will now after watching this. Thank you Tim.
It was nice to see a newly laid runway but sad that it is all that is left of what looks like a much larger airfield. I also wonder about the solar farm on the apporach. If there was a right-hand crosswind I could imagine a lot of low level turbulence off those. Although I am probably over-estimating their effect. Anyway, it looks like a nice place and as the chap in the video said, it is nice to see money spent on an airfield these days.
Nice one Tim - I've looked at Beccles on the map and will now give them a visit! I'm grounded again at the mo - we're changing the rudder cables and replacing the RT switches on the yokes!! It never rains eh??
A lovely video, Tim, well done! I really enjoyed that and found it interesting from start to finish. The people at Beccles appear so friendly, and the history is amazing. It's now on my list of airfields to visit (from your channel) 👌👏 If they are parachuting on the day you visit, do they give time slots you must avoid, or do you have to hold until clear, if they are doing a drop when you approach?
Thank you for that Kevin, I really appreciate that. I understand that when you call for PPR you are told if they are dropping. Then when you make your initial call you are told if a drop is imminent and you stay clear until the last canopy is on the ground. They seem to be very well organised.
Another lovely video, thank you. Was there a bit of cross wind landing in Beccles? Must take some skill with a tail dragger - far beyound my current skill level. I recently landed a C-150 on a short field with 15 kt side wind - not a landing I am proud of. Made me think I will need a refresh with an instructor before I take passengers. One more: it looks almost sad when a beautiful military runway gets eaten into with race track etc - although one should be happy those runways are no more needed.
Thank you very much. Glad you liked it. I am not too sure why I strayed off the centreline. There was a quartering headwind but I had to be a bit quick on my feet. I held it much better on the take off though. The Jodel has a crosswind limit of 22 knots but that is not easy on tarmac.
I was surprised to see that black landing strip, was that some kind of vegetation? I believe you have only landed on the green stuff, hope you were completely checked out on that surface. ;-) What a lovely little airport, I would love to fly in and stay the night, It's just a little flight from San Francisco. Cheers Mate! great video.
😄 I do land on the black stuff sometimes. Great to see owners happy to invest in their airfields. The accommodation and facilities are great but as you say, a bit of a hike for you! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Tim for a nice get away to Beccles. You mentioned a landing fee - how much did. you have to pay and is that typical for such small airfields? Here in the states we would only have a landing fee at the largest of Class B Airports.
Thank you Kenny. The landing fee was £10 which is pretty standard for small strips over here. We ask people flying into Nayland to pay a £5 landing fee.
Great video. Great advert for Beccles Airfield , the investment at that site seems both positive and impressive. What was the lever being pulled by you and then counting to 5 in flight ?
One last question Tim did you get any turbulence from that Solar Panel farm on approach? Plus presume they don’t parachute all the time? But I imagine a good briefing will come your way on contact for PPR?!
I didn't get any turbulence from the solar farm. The jump aircraft and jump master advise incoming pilots and there is a warning in the PPR if they are jumping.
Great video - I've added Beccles to my list to get to this year - is the runway length the same as before it was re-tarmacked? Skydemon isn't updated yet - thanks
Must drop in there, the grass extention should be long enough for me to land on :-) A good visit video and stop beatng yourself up over forgeting to turn on the recorder.
@@JodelFlyer I have been in Australia for 51 years. I am hoping to move home soon. Suffolk is a beautiful part of the UK. I got my PPL out here. Hopefully it won't be too difficult to convert it to a UK licence. A different ball game compared to Oz. Way more happening in a much smaller airspace !

Another great video and it was great to meet you when you flew in, hope to see you and your Nayland friends real soon.

Thank you very much Graham. Matt has already been in to visit you in his white RV7 (G-OVEY) . I will bring the Nayland squadron in at some point soon.
Good to see Raydon Wing is active again. Raydon has quite a history! Nice to see upgraded runway at Beccles.
I have never landed there but will try to get PPR
It's amazing how much they have helped improve the airfield. Been there a few times by road as its just down the road from where I grew up.
Very nicely done as well. Very stylish!
Loved the tour round on this one. Another enjoyable video Tim, thank you.
Thanks for watching and the comment Robert.

Lovely video Tim, Beccles looks great.
Thank you. I was very impressed with the set up there Mark
Very nice, I like the look of Beccles.
A good place to visit and the menu was very impressive!
Great to see a video of you going places and people trying to do business and be welcoming again. If I'm ever in the area I'll drop in.
Nice to be moving out of lockdown and getting about. It is a good place to visit.

No problem. Did you go for a sandwich from the menu in the end?

Always something to do Mike. Beccles is well worth the visit!
Cheers Tim. Seemed strange that Beccles only used a small fraction of the old RAF runways, but good that they get to operate there at all.
Thanks Jed. A lot of the airfields around only use a part of the old airfield. I did show this for Seething a couple of videos ago.

My dad used to take me to Ellough back in the late 60s to fly our control line plane. The airfield was pretty much as it was in the war back then.
