      It would depend on what else is on that circuit and what size the breaker is. You need to make sure your not overloading the circuit

    Hi will the outlet be hot independent of whether the light is pulled on w the string?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the model of the light fixture and how it’s manufactured. But usually the plug will turn on and off with the pull string. The whole unit ,if it has a pull string , will turn on and off with that.

    Great video. Thanks. I need to do the exact same thing because my old porcelain fixture doesn’t have a receptacle. Can you still buy porcelain fixtures or are they all plastic now? I assume/hope I have a ground wire. Thanks.

      They do have porcelain, it’s still pretty common. They should have them a the box stores or you can find them on Amazon. I should have a link for them in the description of the video.

    So the socket I’m working on is the first in a sequence of 3. The ground wire bypasses this first one but is connected from the input wire to the wiring going to the next socket. How critical is it that I connect the ground wire to this first one? First time homeowner here and I’m just now facing my fears with regards to simple electrical tasks…please be kind.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should always have the grounds connected where there’s a place for them. That’s usually a green screw on fixtures or to the lamp housing or a terminal off to the side indicated by being a different color. It’s make sense to have it connected from start to finish.

    • @FortKnoxCo

      I’d check with codes in your local area. I wouldn’t put above a shower or bathtub. but other areas should be okay. You should have good ventilation. Also check to see if the fixture is recommended for areas with moisture or not.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure what you’re asking the way your question is worded. If you don’t have the light with the plug on the base you would need to purchase one with the plug on it. Then install the new one with the plug. That’s what u did in this video. Took a standard light bulb and switched it with one that has a plug too.

    What happens if you have two black and two white wires from previous connection? I think I see two holes for the clamps to bite down on the wire for each connection the way you've done it.. is that the best way? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you have two blacks and two whites is probably in the middle of two other fixtures on that same line. So you can connect the two blacks to the hot terminal on the fixture and the two white on the neutral terminal. That will allow the power to continue through the fixture and down the chain to the next fixture. I’d pigtail the wires thought. You don’t want to double up wires under one terminal.

    • @FortKnoxCo

    Do you think this would be safe to use to plug a garage door opener into?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I probably wouldn’t plug the garage door opener into it. One this might be a light switch and you wouldn’t want your garage door opener to be on a wall switch. Also it depends on the type of breaker, most lighting in the ceiling is on a 15 amp and you would probably need a 20 amp wall type outlet. Usually circuits ran for garage door openers are dedicated lines. So if you did plug it into the ceiling like that from a previous light it would probably pop the breaker

    Hard to find answers. Code states all outlets in a garage must be GFCI, I believe also TR and WR. Does this also apply to outlets in a light fixture? Seems to me this type of light fixture no longer complies with code in garages. Not trying to crap on the video at all, just genuinely trying to find answers.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That may be true depending on where you live and the current codes. In most cases a GFCI is just a second layer of protection along with the breaker in the box. It’s a little redundant but just for added precautions.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also when they say “all” outlets must be GFCI they are stating that every circuit must have a GFCI on it. Usually all circuits in a house including the garage outlets go from the breaker panel to the first outlet in the circuit which will be a GFCI outlet, then each outlet on the chain will be a standard outlet. That whole circuit is a GFCI circuit now. But you don’t have to have a whole chain of GFCI outlets on one circuit. That would be 1000% overkill and unnecessary

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FortKnoxCo Thanks. I had heard of the chaining method to avoid it which at least makes things a bit less expensive. Most sources I was reading said it was part of the brand new 2020 code IIRC and I can't even find light fixtures with built in GFCI receptacles, so I guess they would have to be chained unless simply using a GFCI breaker covers it.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, when I built my detached garage they had me put a GFCI on every circuit. It used to be just in wet or high moisture areas. Now they require it the be the first outlet one each circuit no matter what.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FortKnoxCo Annoying, but hopefully it does actually save some houses or lives. Seems with the 2020 code even 240V outlets will need GFCI protection. This is going to make rewiring my garage a looot more expensive. Might just go with all GFCI breakers if that meets the requirements. Seems AFCI isn't required for the garage currently at least. Thanks for the replies.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s on a 20amp 120v circuit. It rated for the average light or wall outlet I believe. Each item you plan on purchasing should list what it’s rated for though

    @kurtisqueen8058 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Will the outlet work when the light is off?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this situation no. It’s a hot wire controlled by the switch. So anything on the other end of this circuit is based off that switch. In the scenario I showed in the video I’m just incorporating a plug into the lighting to be able to branch off lights by plugging them rather than having to hardwire more lights. I have a video about how to hardwire lights as well if your curious.

    • @artriumph
      @artriumph ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the pull chain just controls the light and the outlet is hot at all times.

    I was planning on replacing my fixture with a gfi outlet for My shop lights. Do you think the fixture you installed is sufficient or is a better option for an added layer of safety?

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think you need the GFCI. The breaker at the box is already one layer of safety. The circuits usually from the breaker box are running off a GFCI outlet also down the line. Most likely the light outlet your thinking of replacing has a GFCI on the line already.

    • @FortKnoxCo
      @FortKnoxCo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can turn the light switch off and you should be fine. But just general advice is to try to turn the breaker off to be completely sure. I know exactly what you mean with not knowing which breaker circuit it is. That’s a common problem is that the builders don’t label all their breakers in the box. So most homeowners have no idea where to start. Technically yes if the switch is off, then the power is off to that light. Just make sure no one flips it back on while you’re working on it.

The fixtures are very straight forward as far as securing them. Most people get stopped when it comes to messing with the wires. Black(hot) white(neutral) & you bare copper ground (green)
