One thing about Stardew that is overlooked is the abolity to play local co-op! Me and my partner play together and we love it. Almost none of the newer farming sims have that.

It’s definitely not the oldest with harvest moon predating it by 20 years. Along with the other farming games that followed harvest moon in that era. Though I do love stardew valley the most, it took qualities from those games and really honed them.

I played Harvest Moon DS in excess as a kid and there are two features I wish carried over in more oftoday's farming sims:
    1. Farmer competitions like best chicken/cow or horse racing, or even the cooking festival. Just another motivator to make your farm better
    2. Black heart events just add so much personality to the bachelors/bachellorettes. If you were romancing one of them it feels like a competition, and if you're not then it's fun to see other relationships form aside from your own
Also a third thing that was in one of the GameCube HM's, can we please bring back rival farmers? I only remember it in one game and it was so fun

Ehhh. The lack of customization, the not so amazing romance options, characters feel shallow, oversimplified mechanics, it just feels like it should be fleshed out more. And her giving it an S tier JUST for voice acting?? Girly...then this isn't a genuine review. It's not even a true farming sim so her review is very misinformative. Also the fact that she put Sun Haven, Roots of Pacha below Wylde Flowers made me actually laugh out loud. This will be a dislike from me 💀what a disappointment

Not sure if it would be your cup of tea, but I'm very fond of Graveyard Keeper, it feels very much like Stardew's more morbid cousin. It's hilarious and weird, and the DLC lets you get zombie minions to work for you. It does have a sad tendency to occasionally crash on the Switch though, which is kinda annoying, especially since the start-up load takes some time. But I have a lot of fun with it, and who doesn't love a talking skull for a companion, lol.

Being a big Square Enix games fan, Harvestella was like a dream come true, to have my favorite universe mixed with a genre that definitely needs more attention as a whole. The biggest bad point of that game is that it doesn't offer you that much in term of contents compared to most farm sim game, you better approach it as an actual small jrpg that has sim farm in it. It's also a bit sad that they didn't put more funds into it for a bit more of voice acting cause the little you hear of it sounds really good.
Aside from that, it's imho the best rpg farm sim game avaible as it really tried to actually developed the action-rpg side and not just add weapons and levels to simulate it. I won't even talk about the character design and artwork, they're just gorgeous.
Inspiration wise, I couldn't help having fun trying to guess some sources, like one "stage" looks directly inspired from NieR Automata (if you played if, you should know which stage I'm talking about), or one of the cutscene that was directly "copied" from Chrono Trigger.
Which ends up back to the bad point I mentionned, it's just too short. Especially for a game priced as such, you'd just want more out of it, but sadly it feels like the game's already archived for Square Enyx and we won't get anything more out of it ; (
Sun Haven was the other big surprise for me, as it's basically stardew valley meets rune factory. One would think they would try too much to approach both worlds and ending up offering not much, but for a game that just got fully released recently, it's already quite complete and full of stuff to do. And it's not even the "complete game" as they already talked about releasing more major updates (post game stuff, like post marriage epilogue with the romanceables for instances).
I'm a bit surprise you didn't mention any Rune Factory game, maybe you're just not into them at all, 'tho if you're ever interested in them, I heavily advice you to not bother with the latest entry, Rune Factory 5, as it was the biggest letdown any fan of the serie has experecienced, and as a farm sim game, it's pretty bare. They just release RF3 Special (basically a hd port of the old ds game) but one that is considered the best overall is RF4, as it allows playing as male or female, has an actual story, has simply more to do on the variety scale and is also enjoying more Quality of Life features that older entries didn't get. If I had to say one of its good point compared to a lot of other similar game is the amount of variety dialogues you get from every "portraied" npcs in the town.

I'm a big SquareEnix fan too, so Harvestella sounds like it's a good fit for me. Have you tried Dragon Quest Builders 2? It's an old one, but it's also from SE, and it has a pretty big farming/animal collecting element, which is why I'm surprised it hardly ever gets included in rpg/farming tier lists.

I’m in the middle of Harvestella and I’m SO glad I stuck with it. I love farming sims but get bored easily so I really lovelovelove the combat and the characters and the skill trees. I really love it. I was a little turned off at first but after a little while I was so addicted to it I almost lost my job lol. The art is beautiful and story is sooooo good engrossing and a little out-there but it’s just so so so fulfilling and satisfying to get through. I really loved the fact that you need to grow food to make your food to fuel your adventures and you cook for buffs and debuffs. I adore it. The side quest of the engaged couple with the guy who lost his memory just gutted me.
It’s got it’s downsides but I love it so much and I pray it gets a series. It could easily be given a little more love and perfected a bit but the game is wonderful. I understand it’s not everyone cup of tea but I really love the combat. I’m so happy I played Octopath Traveler 2 before it so I well understood Breaks and weaknesses etc.
Also I highly suggest Atleier Ryza series. The first one is a little rough but as long as you play it enough to get the idea down, the late game is amazing and the next 2 games are SOO GOOD!

SDV is what got me into farming sims (and I have tried a life sims in the past *Looks at Sims and Viva Pinata*). I've been playing it off and on since the year it came out. Also it's the game that got me into checking out indie games on Steam.
Sun Haven is like #1 on my list of games to get right now, at least for Steam. I might get a totally different game for Switch next just because I want to watch reactions to this game, but I don't want to get spoiled until I play it since it's a mystery thriller. But yeah huge Fantasy fan, so I hope I do enjoy Sun Haven.
LOVE Coral Island. I would definitely rank it A tier at least. What is also nice is the game in subtle ways helps you learn what the villagers like too. I also love how there's still a bit a mystery. Like how does the logistics of dating a Merkfolk work lol? FYI, there's 3 dateables- 2 female and 1 male. But yes, 1.1 should be out by this Fall I think? The game devs have really been moving along quickly lol. They even updated their roadmap as a result.
I also plan on getting Roots of Patcha at some point, but there are other games I want more, like Story of Seasons: It's a Wonderful Life. I also will probably get Wylde Flowers too. Too many games on this list I swear lol.

It’s great to hear good things about harvestella. I put it as an A personally because I kind of disagree with the fact that there seems to be purpose to farming. I personally didn’t really find a purpose other than to make money, which is prob true for most farming games anyway, but there was a lack of things to do with that money aside from farm and weapon upgrades. There’s no customization for your house or even a point to using the food you farm to cook since you can just use forageables. Tho at one point I did fill my farm with tomatoes to turn into juice lol but the lack of variety then is not too fun either. Generally for farming games I wish there was more point to farming and earning money in the long run.

Do you mean Switch bugs? The PC version had a lot but that was in the beta. They addressed all of them and it runs awesome for me now. But some things need changing. Like how hard it is to get night shards…such a PITA! And so many quests require them for making purified night shards.

It's a shame some people consider playing as a character instead of themselves as a bad thing. I found playing an established character like Tara in Wylde Flowers was one of the best parts. She has personality and backstory, I was getting to know her along with the other villagers. I'll never quite understand this desperate need to play as one's self. I personally loved playing Tara's story.

I prefer to play as myself because it feels like I'm living in the game. Good way to escape reality lol. BUT not in a drastic way either. If I have to play an established character ESPECIALLY one like Tara, it's fine too. Tara was interesting and the game itself is great, the storyline, the voice acting etc. all of it made sense AS Tara.

I think that I developed a habit of preferring to play games as “myself” back when main characters were primarily white and male. I actually got into Sims when I saw that you could create your own character. I figured if there weren’t characters I could relate to in regular games I could make my own story. I think that feeling has sort of stuck with me. I’ll play and like other games too but the ones with character customization will always be top of the list for me.

    • @brionl4741
      @brionl4741 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I don't think it's a "bad" thing to play as a pre-made character, I just can't get into it.
Ever since the earliest days of CRPGs, like Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord when your "character" was just a pile of numbers with an optional name.

    • @steffid_

I prefer playing myself too and simply put playing myself feels like when you are reading a book and get really immersed into the story and absorbed. Playing an established character feels to me like when someone is telling you the story of said book. It is still interesting and exciting but does not feel like it happens to myself and i get to experience it. I hope this makes any sense to you. Both kinds can be lovely but it is a different experience for me. 😊

I found in Mineral Town that I was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, whereas in Olive Town I felt much more like I was in control of the experience I was having and wasn't fighting with a clock. I have heard that the machine mechanics got changed, and I did play that later, so that may be part of it. I will agree, though, that the townsfolk are not its strong suit.

Dreamlight valley was a huge disappointment for me and I wish I have never purchased it. The main story line is interesting but then when it comes to lvl up new characters everything is a bit repetitive, of course additional payments in the game which are not "micro" like you said - they are actually MACRO ( you remember what you said about umbrella? really greedy devs) + the game is quite repetitive already so overall I don't really see a good future for this game to be honest. For me this game is a F category, so I really really regret paying for this game. Lesson is learnt, though. As a lover of chill games, and a lifelong fan of farming sims, I am getting *so* sick of the farming sims 😂 It feels like almost every week someone's coming out with a "new" one. Can we get an actual, real twist on the classic farming game? Farming in space? Farming fictional crops and livestock? Going deeper into relationships with villagers? Going deeper into lore (for crying out loud can we have a farming sim that doesn't start with "you randomly inherited a broken down piece of property that you need to rebuild")? Choose your own adventure? Something? Anything?

Coral Island looks great, and so does Wylde Flowers. You are so right about SV being “the game that never dies”. Its in early access, but there are already so much you can do in it.

Palia has been my go to favourite farming sim. There's still a lot of room for improvement but it definitely scratches that farming itch, that desire for farm decorating, and the exploration that takes inspiration from Breath of the Wild. There are micro-transactions, but they are only for cosmetics, and is a free-to-play MMO. Plus they have some of the best written villagers in a farming sim, period. They feel so genuine and I love all of their interactions. The multiplayer aspect could be developed better, but what they have encourages a lot of cooperation and sharing. Highly recommend!

Surprised you didn’t put Disney Dream light lower on your list. This game made me so angry to play on the switch (more than any game I’ve ever played I believe), and there is no excuse in my opinion for it running so poorly. I had no clue when I bought it that it would run horribly on the switch and I couldn’t convince myself to buy it again for the computer. Games that do so much more and have way less developers are more than capable of being released and running smoothly, even if it that means waiting a little longer for the game to release. If they are willing to charge that much for a game I expect it to be finished and capable of being played. So many people defended it running poorly at first because they “needed time to fix bugs” but then they just never fixed anything for the switch and nobody seems to defend it anymore. After my game crashed over four times and I had to start over, I gave up and realized I totally wasted 60 dollars plus two micro transactions on the worst game I’ve ever played. I truly felt I wasted my time and my money and was mad at myself for even paying greedy Disney in the first place.

The Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is literally a remake of an older game. This older game was Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. The Harvest Moon franchise was what started farming sims over here in the west. It isn’t a reboot, so all of the stuff stays the same. There may be some quality of life improvements but luckily it has mostly stayed the same as it was when it came out in 2004. To put it in A tier does it a disservice.

    • @ricecristpy

I thought the same thing. The OG Harvest Moon games are the entire reason this genre exists and the reason Stardew is the way that it is. I feel like there's a lot of people who aren't really farming sim genre fans, they're just Stardew fans and when games don't replicate or improve on that standard they're put aside.

Speaking of, for anyone looking to venture out of the pure farming Sim, but you want a fun farming element and lots of customization of your farm, consider trying Dragon Quest Builders 2. I love that game and feel like it doesn't get enough mentions (though it is old...we need a part 3).

Have you taken a look at the Rune Factory series?
Its a spinoff of the original Harvest Moon (Story of Seasons) games that, on top of everything from the older Harvest Moon games, they implemented dungeons, various weapons and weapon/armor crafting (various types of weapons, including wands and dual blades), instead of buying and raising cows, sheep and chickens, you befriend the monster equivalent. They can also help with farming, and you can ride them and take them into battle with you.
If you do want to try it, I would recommend starting out on Rune Factory 4, which has been recently ported to Switch and PC.
