    So this record was made as everyone was waking up from the Factory dream and a decade or so of being out of their heads on every substance under the sun... acid house was fading and reality was setting in... and the band was not getting along... they had worked with Stephen Hague and had great singles success and he came in to referee and stitch together this record, which was largely made without more than one member of the band in the studio at a given time... so its a "comedown" record in every sense and the strongest impression at time of release was one of wistfulness... if you come at it from that perspective, its a gorgeous compact jewel of very well constructed pop songs, and of course Regret is all of their best songs restated in a slightly new way... slag it off if you must, but you may return to it some day and find hidden charms in these lovely, understated songs...

    Tepid is a good adjective to describe Republic. I did like Regret, World, Liar, and Times Change somewhat but these songs are far from my favorite. Get Ready is in my opinion a more entertaining album, rockier and definitely far more interesting songwriting ideas

    The Vinyl version of NO Substance only has the 12" Singles, minus Hurt. The recording of Ceremony featured is the 2nd version with Gillian Gilbert as part of the band. Temptation and Confusion were recorded for the album, and some of the mixes for other songs were cut short as well. The CD release however, has the second disc featuring the B sides, as well as the 7" only single Procession, and the 12" single Hurt.

    I love Republic but I still found your reaction interesting. I actually felt bad for you! I have the impression from past videos you're more a rock guy and that Republic leans towards dark dance music on New Order's spectrum, therefore, I wasn't surprised you didn't like it. If you ever listen to it again, I'd say take particular notice of the lyrics, as they're pretty good, and can be interpreted as chronicling the end of New Order and their record company...

    A few thoughts on this album. Aside from "Regret," "Liar" is definitely one of the stand-out tracks for me, as well. The chorus is catchy and I like Sumner's rather snarky lyrics: Were you abandoned in your youth, Because if not, you will be soon. The album version of "World" is okay, but I much prefer the 7" Perfecto Mix, as it has a lot more energy (the 12" mix is way too long). "Everyone Everywhere" has some beautiful and rather contemplative elements to it, which I appreciate. But the album version is nothing compared to their live performance of it in Reading '93. If you get a chance I recommend you listen to that version of it and see if it doesn't breathe some new life into the song. "Spooky" and "Young Offender" are okay, but nothing great. I really like the chorus for "Times Change," but man, Barney really needs to stay away from the rapping. Most of the songs at the end I barely remember what they sound like because I almost never listen to them. I almost never listen to this album as a whole, but I do appreciate the precious few gems it has left us.
    "Get Ready" and "Waiting for the Siren's Call" are both better in my opinion. I may have mentioned this before, but "Sirens" is my favorite New Order album. Probably an unpopular position to hold among fans, but we all have our preferences. Thanks for being willing to put yourself through this reaction for our benefit lol.

    • @PhantomSnake84
      @PhantomSnake84 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting opinions. I've always thought Waiting For The Sirens' Call was underrated. It's got some skippable tracks but the title track is absolutely incredible, it's easily their best song of the 00s and to me it's like a spiritual sequel to Regret which is their best post-80s song. I also think of it as New Order's farewell track as it has the original Joy Division trio of Barney, Hooky and Stephen. Krafty is a fun, retro sounding tune and Turn is one of New Order's better straightforward rockers.

    Totally agree with your take on 'Republic' aside from 'Regret', the songs are bland. To be honest, this is first time I've heard most of these songs in years, they are that uninspiring (Regret excluded).
    I go back and listen to every other New Order album, except for Republic. You would like 'Get Ready' the next album, it's far better. Not sure why Peter Hook said 'Regret' was last great New Order song, maybe he said it off the cuff, as 'Crystal' 'Turn My Way' 'Here to Stay" and 'Waiting for Sirens call' are all great songs.

    Where New Order went off the rails was when Barney decided he was going to be a serious song writer. What was great about earlier New Order was that they tore up the rulebook, but when they started following the rules instead they lost what made them special.

    This album gets a lot of hate, but overall its actually quite good. I think there are two issues. First, the album opens with an absolutely perfect modern rock/pop track (Regret)...and then there is the rest of the album, which pales in comparison. Second, not enough of Hooky's epic bass lines.

    I think the album is OK in places... Concerning 'Ruined in a Day', yeah, the album version is very boring, but (in my opinion), the K-KLASS REMIX, improves things quite a lot - it basically sounds much more robust, and has atmosphere injected, with the additional electronics.

    Republic is a fantastic LP. At the time it was great to see them return as New Order. We’d seen them all part ways to do their own stuff, Hooky with Revenge, Bernard with Electronic and Stephen and Gillian as The Other Two. So to see all of them back together was great and I felt they delivered a strong LP with Republic. It must also have been a strange time for them with Factory collapsing, the Hacienda hitting hard times and things beginning to fall apart. Also, what I’ve always found being a fan is that they often trod a fine line between being dance/electronic and guitar rock. They are often seen as one of the first bands to mix these genres. I’ve always preferred their electronic sound and on many tracks just wish hooky would pipe down with the porno guitar playing. This is why my favourite tracks see Hooks sound take a backseat. When they did do their solo projects I personally found Hooks to be the weakest, Revenge, Monaco and even worse 3Base prove my point. Where as Electronic was a brilliant LP and I even love listening to Gillian sing on The Other Twos record. Hook is a great player, but I don’t miss him. I think he’s also into his legacy and living in the past. However, I’m just not into the rock sound and would rather listen to Technique or Republic than Low-life or Brotherhood any day. Fine Time, Mr Disco and Vanishing Point hit my spot every time, as do Regret, Special and Ruined In A Day.

    Republic is boring. Try to listen to it in the background when you’re tired and doing things you need to do. Then it’s great. For me even better than PC&L if I’m in the mood. Technique, Brotherhood, Low-Life, Get Ready and Music Complete are always far better, but Republic is at a solid no. 6 when I feel for it.

    As a Joy Division devotee, I have nothing but love for them marching on as New Order. Musically, they have some amazing songs…but….BUT….Bernard Sumner. Find the note. Find the note. His thin and keyless voice just kills everything for me. It’s amazing how many people just sit and listen without complaint. He can’t carry a note and is all over the place, pitch wise. The music. The bass. The drums…fantastic so many times…then Bernard comes in…

He doesn’t want the fans who love to think he doesn’t like it as much as they do. You’d have to be blind to see that he when into this album with the idea it is’s New Order’s worst album to date.

    I get your point in the general sense about the album being almost MOR and not having aged well - but 'Liar' is barely B-side material and easily one of the worst half dozen New Order songs ever recorded. Not sure how you can see it as a standout here.
    Republic makes the mistake of falling between several tools and going down the path of least resistance - as a result it ends up sounding like a band who aren't all that but were trying to copy the New Order sound. It ends up trying to be a bit of everything but ultimately being nothing.
    Conversely I think 'Special' is one of the better tracks here but...would it get on PCR, Low Life or Technique? Just barely I'd say...

  • @livecoilarchive1458
    @livecoilarchive1458 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Peter Hook said "Regret" was the last TRUE New Order song, not the last good one. Even still, and I'm in the minority...I don't like it that much. All of Republic is terrible. It only pushed the band further into commercial territory, to very little artistic benefit. The worst part? Even as early as Brotherhood, Bernard was fighting Peter over the volume of his bass. The other band members felt Peter prioritized himself too much on PC&L and Low-Life, since he helped mix all the early NO records. But a big part of what made those records and Joy Division great are the bass lines. Melody is one of the biggest parts of pop songs, and what instruments plays the melody in these bands? The bass!! Peter is too quiet on Technique and almost completely underutilized on Republic, ruining the records almost singlehandedly. Nevermind the fact Bernard is obviously phoning it in on Republic, clearly wanting to get to Electronic ASAP.
