The Old Norse word Lyfjaberg means ‘Healing-mountain’ and is known from Norse mythology as a place of comfort and cure for the sick and sore who manage to climb the mountain.“The song expresses that climbing a tough mountain, both in reality and metaphorically, is a mental as well as a physical effort. I have tried to write this journey up the mountain as one for the mind and spirit as much as the feet and body. Anything of true value, comes at a true cost,” says Einar Selvik. Climb the mountain it's worth it!...... The video for Lyfjaberg produced by Ragnarok Film .The mountains at Tustna and the spectacular Trollkirka caves in Norway serve as a beautiful backdrop.
Um.. I’ve studied old Norse, Berg more means Cliff or boulder than mountain. I would think Lyfja would do with life, but i don’t know any translation of Lyfjaberg meaning “Healing mountain”. Lyfja could also be a verb in a sense, but no gloss showed for it. Can you link where you got that translation?
@@jackwooten2374 This song is in Norwegian (nynorsk), as I'm sure you know. "Lyfja" however, means "medicine" in Icelandic, and possibly old Norse as well? "Berg" is commonly used in Norwegian about both lower rocks near water (svaberg) and huge bare rocks in steep parts of mountains (bergvegg), but usually not in giving names or in reference to the whole mountains. The foundation of a mountain is however - the "berggrunn".
@@jackwooten2374 Lyfjaberg, or Hyfiaberg. If you ascend the hill or mountain to the top with a gift, you will be gifted in return. Lyfjaberg is a mountain in the Old Norse poem Fjölsvinnsmál. But the mountain in the poem is quite different to how Wardruna presents it here. In the poem, a man named Svipdagr arrives at a castle at the Lyfjaberg mountain top. There he meets the castle's watchman, Fjölsviðr, who asks him to leave because no one is allowed to enter. Before doing so and leaving he asks Svipdagr to tell him his name though. Svipdagr refuses to tell his name, and a sort of guessing and question game starts where they take turns asking each other questions. Svipdagr learns that the goddess Menglöð (probably the goddess Freya, Norse gods have tons of different names) lives in the castle, and has been weeping in her castle on the mountain Lyfjaberg waiting for the god Svipdagr. The watchman who doesn't know Svipdagr's name tell him she has never met Svipdagr, but she knows he is destined to be her husband. The castle where she sits is impregnable at the top of Lyfjaberg. It's surrounded by blazing fire, balancing on top of a spearhead and guarded by two mythological dogs, Gifr and Geri. It becomes more and more appararent that the only way inside is for Svipdagr to reveal his name but he is reluctant to do this for some reason. The watchman Fjölsviðr is also revealed to not just be a simple watchman, but actually a giant, called the All-Knowing-One, and he is the guardian of the castle. Finally, after much banter, where a lot of information is revealed, at the end of the poem Svipdagr reveals his name and the castle lets him insde where Menglöð throws herself in his arms saying how long she has waited, yearned and weeped for him. During their questioning back and forth some healing practices are revealed, which ties into the name of Lyfjaberg (healing mountain). Specially ailments that women experience exclusively is mentioned, such as uterine prolapse, and what herbs that help with it. Menglöð seems to feel a very special compassion towards women. It's also revealed that Menglöð is said to sit in a circle of nine maidens, whose names seem to reveal that they too are healing and protective mists. This is mentioned in the song where they sing about "nine maidens". So, the poem, like so many others, is a mythological poem of a similar kind to Vafþrúðnismál, Alvíssmál and Heiðreksgátur, which are also based on questions and answers, that is supposed to teach you something. One thing though that I don't think is mentioned in the song is that ONLY women who climb the mountain gets cured by Menglöð and her nine maidens, because of her special compassion for women. That's why it's not Einar, but Lindy, who is at the top of the mountain in several shots in the video. I'm sure this is intentional.
His reluctant to reveal his name for very serious reason, as it would give the guard a magical power over him, name being the mystical and soul-like part of one's personality.
Thans you for this backstory! One can't help but wonder about the cultural context of the original story. I mean it obviously has someting to do with GIRL STUFF, but other than that haha
I was about to write quite the same thing ! It's my healing song, I've listened to it so many times since its release, it helped me through the pandemic, through the illness too. I'm so glad The Charismatic Voice has analysed and discovered it, this song is such a beauty !
Lyfjaberg is definitively a meditative song. From the visuals, sounds, and lyrics. The tension builds until the release later in the song. Wardruna perfectly executed the purpose of the song: to heal. A great song by a great band.
Big part of amazing Wardruna is all ways gorgeous Lindy-Fay Hella, who has so distinguishing and resonating voice. Was more than happy to see Wardruna twice this year and also Lindy-Fay on her own. Seafarer and Los are example songs from her solo catalogue to check out.
Thank you so much! This was a pleasure to watch. The song is one I never get tired of listening too. It was an amazing oportunity to work with Wardruna in creating this music video. And yes, it was supposed to be late spring (we filmed in the middle of May), and the snow just kept on coming down. A week later it was gone. But for us it was a challenge to overcome and we think it really made the video. Our own Healing-Mountain.
That video coupled with the song was just...an experience. For ten minutes, I felt like I was in another world entirely. Beautifully done, truly. Thank you so much for creating that with Wardruna. Cheers from Canada!
When she mentioned the snow was unexpected for the shoot and clearly posed a challenge I thought, "how fitting!" The end result is truly beautiful so clearly the challenge was met! Well done.
Yay, Wardruna!!! Old Norse specialist Dr. Jackson Crawford here on youtube (who was consulted for AC Valhalla!) has enthusiastically endorsed them, which is truly a high compliment. I don't know if this song is based on it, but Einar spoke in an interview about fasting for (I believe) 2 days before hiking into the mountains in heavy snow in order to really feel and embody the emotion for a song he was writing at the time so it could be heard in the recording and when performed live. Such dedication :)
The song he fasted before recording was "NaudiR", which roughly translates to "Need" but more specifically refers to need in the context of a person/animal near death - the adrenaline rush, desperation and instinct for self-preservation that kicks in at the last moment and can save your life.
I love the way Wardruna responded to the pandemic with their artistry in a positive and life-affirming way. They bring it home to everyone with their primal style. Marillion did the same thing with their song "Care" in a totally different way. But similarly, they shine a light through the darkness and bring a feeling of hope and strength to endure. This is what the best artists can do.
As far as the foot steps go. I once read an interview that Einar would go out and record himself walking around in the woods while he gained inspiration and gathered his thoughts and that piece of info has always stuck with me and one of the reasons why I love them. I thought that was so cool ❤️
Thank you for your analysis of one of my favorite songs. Indeed you are right, it was released at the perfect time, we, I, needed it when it came. Being Norwegian myself, the lyrics spoke to me, and so did the meditative rhythm of it. And to this day, I struggle to hold my tears back listening to it. I feel lucky and privileged to finally have seen them live, at this years Midgardsblot. The perfect location for this music, amongst the burial mounds outside Borre in Norway. I try to incorporate this song in my own healing, trying to get out of a dark hole, by reminding me the hike is a tough one, but worth the trip. And also "hjertelig takk" (heartfelt thanks) for all your videos, they mean a lot to me. I've cried and laughed, and always enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing from your well of knowledge. I listened to this for hours on repeat when it came out. I guess I'm hearing and feeling everything Elizabeth hears and feels but I lack the word's and the musical knowledge to explain it. Wardruna is something special. 🖤🤘🏻 from Germany
I agree!! I also saw them but in spring in Ireland and this was like an putter body experience hearing for sure. I had just left a very toxic job that left me spiritually and physically spent. And seeing them was thy healing journey I needed.
WHAT an awesome song. It's almost like his songs hit a chord with us that just reverberates and resonates inside us. Feel like can't get enough of it. Loved your take on this.
It was such a privilege and joy to have seen them in Atlanta last month. I'm not a religious person, but when this song started I felt so damned at peace. And when Helgeven was performed, I was legitimately brought to tears, having recently lost my father.... It was magical
What a timing. I have been listening to this song few times a day for the last week or so. Without ever reading the lyrics. Now I know why this song is calling me. I am climbing my healing mountain recently in my life. Now I understand. Thank you ❤️ Ultimate goosebumbs music.
Just saw them in concert this past Friday. Absolutely stunning. I didn’t take a single picture or video because I was completely transfixed from the first sound to the last.
This is a song and visual performance of the ages... a replaying and retelling of an epic journey.. tough to listen to too much... love all his work and his interviews are incredible.
Love your Wardruna reactions! I was able to see them live in North Carolina a few weeks ago. Waves of rolling goosebumps. Hearing Helvegen live brought tears to my eyes. It was like experiencing it again for the first time.
I've re-watched your reaction to this at least once a day. I love how you have so much to add and/or express while watching this. Your reactions are always perfect 🥰 thanks for doing this one, it was great!
Thank you for a great reaction video, I think you have better that anyone captured the layers of sound and visuals and how we try to root this in nature and our norse heritage. Fun fact, you can see Einars drum warping throughout the shot due to the snow and weather we had during shooting. I am the Walker in the video, and I can confirm it was quite cold and it was not supposed to snow
Just saw Wardruna and it was truly an experience. I love coming here to see you experience music. Your openness and and true love of the expression of music is so refreshing and uplifting. Thank you!
I just saw them on the 30th in Salem, Oregon. Lindy was fantastic. And what can I say about Einar? The guy is a wonderful human being and a great musician. Everyone in attendance loved the guy and cheered for him. I'm glad I got to see them.
I can never get enough Wardruna or Heilung. For me, what makes this musical journey even more profound is Einar putting his hands on his chest in the beginning and then down at the end. He took us on an enchanted journey in between. Many levels in this one!!
omg another nordic music reaction!! i love your heilung reactions & i’m so happy you reacted to this song of wardruna’s, it’s one of my favourites! please do more! 😍
The only word I can think of to describe this song is "transcendent". I have listened to it so many times in the last few years and it's never stopped feeling like the first time, it really just makes your heart soar.
I love the sound of Scandinavian music. I think the way I got introduced to this band was just a random compilation of Scandinavian songs. I'm so glad I found Wardruna. They helped me write my literature coursework. I literally binge-listened to all of their albums while writing it. It was quite the emotional rollercoaster and Wardruna helped me through it!
I have heard this song thousands of times and it still makes me feel so alive, so lucky that it came into my life at this very moment. Thank you Wardruna. Your analysis and your way of feeling the music have been wonderful as always.
This community is amazing, they always recommend the best songs out there! Her video's make me experience music that is already amazing in so many more ways, be it analytical or emotional.
Einar Selvik and Jesper Kyd made AC Valhalla such an enjoyable game mainly because their music provided atmosphere, immersion, all things healing to the soul.
YES! It's not just that I love Wardruna and Einar, Lyfjaberg is my favourite song by them. If anyone is hearing this for the first time and is digging the music, check out translation of the lyrics, they are absolutely beautiful.
Yes, Wardruna!! I'd love to see you check out more of their songs, especially from the Kvitravn album. They're simply incredible, and it's a delight watching you react to them and the emotions they stir
I'm so hooked on your vids about Wardruna and Heilung. I think I've watched EACH related video about six times! Thanks for spreading the love of nature and the gods that their music seeks to spread.
I regularly find myself binge watching your videos. My wife enjoys listening as well. Keep up the great work. I can't seem to find anything by Seether in your catalog. Perhaps maybe one day.
Saw them live on the 22nd and the crowd reaction to the start of the song was very enthusiastic, It's no surprise to me that this has become one of their bigger songs. The whole concert was special, too, and I eagerly await the next time I can see them live!
YES! So excited for this! Love Wardruna and this is my favorite song of theirs. Can't wait to see your reaction ☺️ I'm actually going to see them live for the first time next Tuesday!
I get to see them in Mesa, Az On Saturday the 5th of Nov after 2 years of waiting, heck, i moved during that time to South Carolina, and i am Flying back to Phx just to see them. Sold out Show. Should be Amazing
The snow covered forests and running streams are so beautiful and perfect for this organic sound, and I love how much attention you pay even to capturing the sound of the footsteps Elizabeth. Your passion is amazing. The female vocals here reminded me of Jessika Kenney who performs experimental vocals that have a similar ancient feel. She appears on the song Cleansing by black metal band Wolves in the Throne Room that is hypnotic.
One of the most if not the most spiritual songs I've ever heard. As the song says, it mends your soul. I have years waiting for you to go there hahah! I´m not sure if you mentioned, but it´s not just Assassins Creed vibes. Einar actually worked with the videogame soundtrack. That guy is amazing. There are a lot of wonderful songs from Wardruna. I really recommend you to react to Andvevarljod, it'will take you to a similar trip.
Yes!! I love this, was gonna suggest this song cause of its beauty. Such a fitting theme and the lyrics are incredible to ponder on. Definitely one of the best songs for meditations
Awesome observations!! One I just noticed is the footsteps matching the drum beats! Saw them my first time in Chicago this month.. and a most beautiful experience it was.. thank you for going over one of they’re best works.. also I absolutely love your ability to embrace and appreciate the music!!!
This song is such a journey. I've listened to it so many times and completely immersed myself in it - and yet, watching this video has helped me to notice things I hadn't noticed before. Incredible. Always love your work, Elizabeth. Thank you!
Band like wardruna and heilung and folk in general has something so primal i think we all connect with it on some level like we recognize it deep within.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time this song just gives me a comforting feeling I listen to it at least once a month, hopefully this reaction will introduce more people to such an amazing song.
I maybe the only one to ask for The Mars Volta... I would really like to see your reaction to their music, Eriatarka is a great song, Meccamputecture is great also Desperate Graves is great. I can't name all the songs I would love to see you react to because it's almost the entire catalog thank you for the content keep it going and congratulations one the subs Nick Soliz.
I like how you can dive into the music and really enjoy it even during your reaction videos. I am musician myself and I can tell - not many people can listen music so carefully.
Saw them in Chicago 2 weeks ago it was an amazing show. I loved their minimalist lighting and set production. Even though it was in a huge venue it felt like we were all in the woods in a tribal circle.
Whenever I listen to wardruna, I have that spiritual, out-of-body experience, their music is just spiritually powerful!! Glad that you feel the same and expressed it in that way!
Thank you for your detailed traction to this video. I enjoy this song very much. I enjoy music that can be used for healing. I will have to listen to more of this group. Their music was very powerful. Elizabeth, please consider reaction to a song entitled Call of the Valkyries. This as written and performed by the Harp Twins. 2 Young ladies who who perform Celtic, country and even metal music on their harps. This music video includes only only their harps but war drums as well. A combination you do not see very much. Take care!
Love these reactions! I would love to see you react to Irish Sean nós singing- I'm sure people ask for Celtic Woman, etc, but Iarla Ó Lionaird is one of the most lovely masculine voices of Irish folk singing in my opinion!
Love the videos keep up the amazing work! surprised to see you havent reviewed Five finger death punch wrong side of heaven as its such a powerful and amazing song

I think it'd be so cool if you got the opportunity to do a live stream chat with Einar Selvik. He's done other Q&A's in the past with others, but i dont think they got to the heart of the music he creates, and i think you could really delve into the way he feels, and creates the music from those feelings.
Great reaction to a song released at such a perfect time. The underwater shots are from Lygnstøylsvatnet in Ørsta, a lake that appeared in 1908 after a huge rockslide from the mountain above it closed the very narrow valley, and some houses were submerged in the river (that turned into a lake). You can still see the foundations of the houses in the crystal clear water. The mountain also decided an old argument on borders between families that lived there, as it just crushed everything and then buried it all in water ☺️
Saw Wardruna live in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on July 9th, it was so majestic listening to them in an ancient theater. I want to see them again (and Heilung too). 💚

I'm not a religious person, but when this song started I felt so damned at peace.
And when Helgeven was performed, I was legitimately brought to tears, having recently lost my father....
It was magical
Danheim has put in an insane amount of effort into his own music like this, definitely worth a listen. Especially IVAR's REVENGE, its amazing
Sweet!
I have been crossing my fingers and hoping for more Wardruna reactions on this channel.
What a timing. I have been listening to this song few times a day for the last week or so. Without ever reading the lyrics.
Now I know why this song is calling me. I am climbing my healing mountain recently in my life. Now I understand. Thank you ❤️
Ultimate goosebumbs music.
I got to see Wardruna live 2 weeks ago, and their live performances are just spellbinding I swear! So excited to see this!
Yeah, it was incredible. I saw them in Montreal.
Yeah I saw them in Durham. Awesome!
Agree! I saw them in Boston. I felt like I was in a trance the whole show. Absolutely incredible. And man could you really feel the percussion.
Thank you for a new addition to the things that give me joy x
Just saw them in concert this past Friday. Absolutely stunning. I didn’t take a single picture or video because I was completely transfixed from the first sound to the last.
This is a song and visual performance of the ages... a replaying and retelling of an epic journey.. tough to listen to too much... love all his work and his interviews are incredible.
Love your Wardruna reactions! I was able to see them live in North Carolina a few weeks ago. Waves of rolling goosebumps. Hearing Helvegen live brought tears to my eyes. It was like experiencing it again for the first time.
Durham!? I was there too. Amazing!
@@toolman0701 haha yes, Durham! That's awesome!
I love your videos SO SO much, your reactions to music give me life.
Thank you!
FINALLY, after a year of me asking for this review!!! Okay I'm done being excited, time to watch!
I just saw them on the 30th in Salem, Oregon. Lindy was fantastic. And what can I say about Einar? The guy is a wonderful human being and a great musician. Everyone in attendance loved the guy and cheered for him. I'm glad I got to see them.
Oh man! This was my suggestion! And one of my favorite songs!
This song is very special to me and one of my favorite songs ever. It speaks to me on a very deep level.... I appreciate the reaction Elizabeth.
Wardruna with Aurora was amazing live.
I LOVE that you are doing more Wardruna, and I hope you'll do more!
Wow wow wow,.... how much you feel this. This ist awesome! I can feel it, when i look this vid.
So excited for this, Einar and Wardruna have such a powerful sound
I am seeing Wardruna live tonight!!! Thanks for posting this today!!!
Yes... Once they fixed the game so the vikingr didn't stop singing as soon as you sailed past literally anything 😋
It's lovely to see you analyzing music. This video was so touchingly beautiful to see you take in Wardrunar. Their music is mesmerizingly beautiful❤
YES! It's not just that I love Wardruna and Einar, Lyfjaberg is my favourite song by them. If anyone is hearing this for the first time and is digging the music, check out translation of the lyrics, they are absolutely beautiful.
It's my favorite song of there's too
Yes, Wardruna!! I'd love to see you check out more of their songs, especially from the Kvitravn album. They're simply incredible, and it's a delight watching you react to them and the emotions they stir
Wardruna on Tuesday ?loving it even before the trailer loads. See you tomorrow.
Saw them live a month ago! Great vibing concert that plays in traditional symphony halls.
this is one of my two favourite bands and maybe one of my most favourite songs especially when your soul needs healing and you need to calm down.
Yes!! I've waited for so long for you to analyze this song!
I’ve always wanted to visit Norway, and now seeing some of the scenery, it makes me want to visit that much more.
The images are hauntingly beautiful quite impressive
Just saw them live Wednesday night. Fantastic show. This is my wife's favourite.
Thank you!
Literally just saw Wardruna in concert Sunday night, one of my all time favorite bands! ♡
Lyfjaberg was the song got me into Wardruna, I love most of their songs, each one so special, but Lyfjaberg has a spot in my heart since day one!
Love that you included wardruna in your videos!
Band like wardruna and heilung and folk in general has something so primal i think we all connect with it on some level like we recognize it deep within.
Indo-European Languages and Indo-Europeans...... Your Roots......
Perfect timing for this reaction, I get the privilege of seeing Wardruna live tomorrow :)
I can't name all the songs I would love to see you react to because it's almost the entire catalog thank you for the content keep it going and congratulations one the subs
Nick Soliz.
Hey, I was there too! What a performance!
Whenever I listen to wardruna, I have that spiritual, out-of-body experience, their music is just spiritually powerful!! Glad that you feel the same and expressed it in that way!
I love this song and your reaction! 🤍
Take care!
I like this very much. Would love to hear more of this sort of thing. Wow!
Wardruna is one of the bands I love the most and Einar Selvik is so charismatic! Lyfjaberg is such an inspirational and powerful song! I listen to it every day! Can't wait to see Wardruna live 💜🎶
Thanks so much for the analysis.
This is an amazingly beautiful song.
You need to see Wardruna live. I saw them in Minneapolis a couple weeks ago, and it was so incredible.
❤I just discovered your page. I must say fantastic work! Keep it up.
One of my favorites, thanks for checking it out :)
I saw them live last year, absolutely incredible
Just saw them in concert a few hours ago. I'm still buzzing from an AMAZING and powerful performance!!
A friend in Denmark turned me onto this and I’ve been eternally grateful ever since. Absolutely love the deep meaning of this. Not sure how I missed it but, it just came up in my suggestions. Bravo! 🖤
Finally! I was waiting for you to discover this one 😁
Saw Wardruna live in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on July 9th, it was so majestic listening to them in an ancient theater. I want to see them again (and Heilung too). 💚
Having just seen Wardruna live a week ago, hearing them alive is the most spiritual experience I've had.
Amazing production of this song really good
This song came out after my first postpartum period. It litterally helped me heal
