    Yep this is why I went with T-mobile internet, had xfinity for years but their services was just unreliable and will go down in speeds randomly for weeks. Got T-mobile and freaking love it, haven't ran into a single issue with their internet for months now.

      That's great! Remember that your network is only as fast as it's weakest link. In your case, that was an older cable. Glad you got it figured out. Give me like a week or two for the tunneling video. Trying to make the topic interesting and informative.

      Great video! In fact I was in the same situation of having optimum as my only service in my development and having tons of disconnect issues with them because the outside cable was over 17 years old.. I've had T Mobile over 2 years an never looked back. I even used the old cable wiring in my home and attached Moca adapters and now have internet where ever those cable lines led to. I do have the first T Mobile router, the Nokia and turned off all Wi-Fi. Kudos to the Nater Tater TH-cam channel for supplying instructions to do so on all T Mobile routers. Lastly, I just installed Firewalla Purple SE to act as my firewall and use my TP Link Wi-Fi 6E router as an access point. EVERYTHING works perfectly. I also have TH-cam Tv for my channels. Can't beat $50 a month for T Mobile!

      Wonder if the speed drops as more traffic comes on board (more customers). Is the data rate guaranteed in writing? No caps but self_leveling by traffic load.

    My daughter and I went to a Verizon store in Fairfax, VA back In August. Sales agent took about two hours to open up my daughter's account but failed mainly because my daughter was underaged that time. We cancelled everything and left the store without anything (No service activation and No phone from Verizon). After about 3 months, we received a letter from Convergent collection agency, saying that we owe $121.77 to Verizon.
    I talked to "many" call center chat agents like you before and also Financial Services agent and many more but no one was able to resolve my issue.
    One chat agent said he/she would submit a fraud case, but some other agents said it shouldn't be treated as a fraud....It has been very confusing. Many agents asked me to contact the Verizon store, so I did call them but the store man said it should be handled by call center not the store! I talked to call center but they said it should be handled by the store.....
    This is my sixth time, explaining my case to Verizon over and over.

    There's really no need to go out and buy a separate router. I'm using the T-Mobile 5G Gateway's built-in router and am very happy with it. I'm getting as high as 600 download speeds and it has the latest and greatest WiFi6 router technology.

    • @stollo770

      You're not wrong. If the built in router is working for you, then that's great. For myself, I have hundreds of WiFi devices around my home (mostly for automation) and I just wanted the granular control over everything.

    I get great speeds too when it works. Problem for me is it goes down way too much. This week, it went down 3 times. Speeds crawl down to 1-2 mb down or it's out completely. I have called 10 times and it's never resolved other then just waiting it out. My wife works from home and internet (decent) is required. I have to have a jetpack backup because it's so unreliable. I have a good to very good signal with my gateway sitting up near the ceiling looking out the window towards the tower which is about 1.5 miles away.

      Try moving it around your home. Try by different windows, and try high up on your second floor (or close to the ceiling if you only have one floor). Also, try different devices, especially one plugged into the back of it using a wired Ethernet connection. Could be anything from un-deal placement of the box, to WiFi interference from something in/near your home.

    That’s good it worked for you! I think when I finally move into a new apartment that I will get it if there’s a T-Mobile tower close and I could get good speeds even when the network is under load. Because I can’t stand paying this $80 for 200 Mbps on Spectrum. Or I guess I could make them lower my price and say I’m gonna switch if they don’t lower the bill.

      If you plan on using your own router, you can turn off the built in T-Mobile one. That's what I did because I didn't plan on using it and I didn't want to worry about it. You can use the T-Mobile one at the same time as your own, but that would be your personal preference. Personally, I get a lot more performance out of my own router, and I think it's better to just use the T-Mobile box as a gateway. Plus, as said in the video, I have a lot of home automation stuff that would quickly exceed the connection limit on the T-Mobile box. Setting up your own router is easy, all you need to do is plug it in, and it does figure itself out. You will have something called a "double Nat" which is basically a router behind a router, but that only impacts port forwarding if you have your own servers. But you can't port forward on T-Mobile anyways. Using your own router doesn't negatively impact speeds. It actually increases them as the built in T-Mobile one is not that great.

I'm outside or a small Midwestern town, andI get nowhere near the speeds you reported, but compared to my 5 MB/s top DSL speed, I'm pleased with something 6 times faster. Signal strength is weak (in an unscreened second story window facing the tower), possibly making my upload speed less than 100 kB/s.. Whenever it rains, I'm back to DSL 5M speeds. It also slows in late afternoon, probably due to traffic loading.

I'm all confused when it comes to that but I was told that my wifi thermostat will not work with 5ghz, so I think I have to separate the networks to 5ghz/2.4ghz. I'm afraid to screw things up! What are your thoughts on this matter?

    • @stollo770
      @stollo770  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some home automation stuff like your WiFi thermostat doesn't communicate over 5GHz. Reason is because they hardly use data, 2.4GHz has a longer range, and it's a cheaper antenna to install. You could turn on 2.4GHz on your T-Mobile box, even give it the same name and password, but I recommend getting your own router. The router I have makes managing both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks easy, and for me, I have a lot of home automation. Probably close to 100 devices. Your limited on the T-Mobile box with how many you can connect (it's how the router in it was built), but with your own router there is no limit. That's why I suggest getting your own router and plugging it into the T-Mobile box.

    Thanks for the video, it came at a good time. I was wondering if it would be an advantage to use a Cat8 cable? My download using Wifi is only 35 and wired is 73, I am hoping that T-Mobile 5G will bring that up to speed. I have been wanting to get rid of cable. Thanks

    • @stollo770
      @stollo770  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cat 8 is a little excessive. You'll definitely get a speed boost with it, but you'd also be fine with Cat6 or Cat7. I'd even say cat7 is excessive. T-Mobile is going to max out, in ideal conditions, at near a gig. Buying cables that exceed that will only help internal network performance. Like if you have a file server with like, beyond gigabit speeds.

    I mean is your router have a different SSID?
    So you need to connect to your router SSID or the T-Mobile Hone Internet SSID?
    Thanks a lot 😊

    • @stollo770

      Hello! If you use your own router, you'll want to connect your devices to the SSID of that router. T-Mobile's router will always have a different SSID than your router. T-Mobile's usually starts with "T-Mobile" followed by random numbers. With your own router, that SSID can be different and you can even change it to be whatever you want. You could also change the T-Mobile router to a different SSID or hide it all together and forget about it. That's what I did.

      Yes, you would be much better off putting the T-Mobile ID back to default (or anything really), and then hiding it. The router in it really can't handle a lot of traffic and the range isn't that great. Use your Google WiFi again and make sure it is connected to the T-Mobile box with a Cat6 (or better) cable. Your Google WiFi will do a much better job at handling your network traffic than your T-Mobile box.

    Hi. Thanks. You spoke for me! I had Comcast. Went down many times everyday for a few minutes reach time. Constantly. I complained to them for 2 years. They came out. Did everything. Could not fix it. Since I switched to T-Mobile in January, it's been up.
    One difference I have from you is that I did plug my TPLINK Mesh M4 router system into it. But I do find that it halves the speed. If I log directly into the T-Mobile modem/router it's twice as fast.
    I'm probably using a cart, not cat6 cable. Could that affect it? Or is my TPLINK slower?
    Finally, may I ask you a question? I actually used to pay Comcast $20/month for a static IP address. I ran my own email server. I got rid of Comcast and the static IP. T-Mobile does not offer a static IP. You spoke about using VPN Tunnels. I don't know much about that (you didn't elaborate). I do use port forwarding in my TPLINK Mesh M4 system. How can I learn about VPN Tunnels? Can I set such a thing up and gain access to my system from the outside?
    I enjoyed your very clearly explained video. Thank you.
    Eli

    • @stollo770
      @stollo770  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel you man. I got so fed up with the service outage and the other BS. Let me address your other issues:
      1. I would definitely try plugging in your mesh router into the T-Mobile box with a cat6 cable. If I had to guess it's probably a Cat5E or something like that, and while Cat5E claims it can be gigabit, it struggles over 100mbps (gigabit is 1000mbps). Also, mesh systems are typically slower because you might be connected to one of your repeaters. Mesh systems, as I'm sure you know, work by connecting repeaters to a base station. Those extra links in the chain degrade speed. So try a Cat6 cable first, then experiment with a non-mesh system. You could try the router I have, or something more beefy to reach your whole home.
      2. I was hesitant to talk about tunneling in detail because I knew 9/10 people wouldn't get it or care. But it is the perfect solution to this problem and I was even doing it on optimum because I didn't want to pay them for a static IP. Here's a super brief summary of the concept: You have a server / application at your home that you need access when your outside of your LAN. Using a tunnel you install on the server itself or your router, you connect your home server to a static IP on the web. That static IP is yours to control and will always be there. So to connect to your home server, you connect and log into the static IP you have, which is actually your tunnel, and then (through the tunnel) you can access / use your server as if you are in your LAN. Your home IP can change as much as it wants because your tunnel will always reconnect to your unchanging static IP (that you set up with the tunnel). And it's more secure than port forwarding because you can encrypt your traffic and your tunnel is password protected. Plus whatever security you have on your server. It's not like someone from the internet can scan your ports (in a traditional set-up) and start trying to break into your server.
      If you're just starting out with this, I highly recommend PacketRiot. They are a tunneling service that makes this whole thing easy. They have free version that will work for you just fine, and if you need to move a bunch of data every month, their paid service is cheap too. They take all the guess work out of it, and everything is encrypted and super safe.
      Maybe my next video will go over tunneling in detail. I just didn't want to include it in this video where I wanted to focus on T-Mobile's service.

    • @REIDLERELI
      @REIDLERELI 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stollo770 wow. I never knew about VPN tunneling. Had I known, I would have done this many years ago to save all that money on my static IP. I understand how the concept works; having my static IP out there on the web in a remote location and always knowing my local network dynamic IP address by having my local IP probably pinging the machine with the static IP so it knows where to send the data. I didn't know there was such a service. You are an excellent teacher. I thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I will look into the company you suggested. I will subscribe to your channel. Please let me know if you produce such a video.

      Here are things you can do to try and improve things:
      1. Use your own router. You're already on this, so that's great. When you get it, make sure to connect it with a Cat6 Ethernet cable or better.
      2. Move your T-Mobile box near a window. If you have a second floor, move it near a window on that second floor.
      3. Ideally, if you know where your tower is, put your T-Mobile box near a window (ideally a your second floor), that is on the side of your home that faces the tower.
      That should speed you up massively. If they are upgrading your tower, that's even better. You might get even faster after that.
