Kings Dominion Adding S&S 4D Free Spin - Why it Makes Sense

- In a surprising move, latest information suggests Kings Dominion will not be receiving their anticipated wing coaster, but rather instead, an S&S 4D free spin. On top of this, it will not be a Volcano replacement, but actually a Crypt replacement. It's a strange move indeed, but here's why it makes sense!

It definitely the safe choice.
Don't panic and rush add a coaster to replace Volcano in the same year that a giga shuttle is opening at Busch Gardens.
Instead, bide your time and really think about what can go in that prime piece of real estate.
You know what, I ain't mad. Why? Well Kings Dominion removed two thrill rides, one an iconic coaster, in a short amount of time and while yes this is not an amazing addition it's some thing new and a reason for all of us to go back. And this isn't even a Volcano replaced, count yourselves lucky as your likely to receive two new coasters in a short amount of time (Considering Volcano will be replaced with something big cause it was a fan favourite)

Something else I’ll point out: Kings Dominion is the only Cedar Park to ever have coasters built by S&S. The other being Hypersonic XLC.

@@quix9556 They worked with RMC in 2018. Did it turn out well though? You would probably say yes since Steel Vengeance is a fantastic ride but... From a business perspective it's not at all that great. It's unreliable as heck. The ride has structural issues. The trains are a mess. The trains bumped into each other. And the most important thing: The ride did not increase attendance. The same goes for Twisted Timbers, lots of issues. Railblazer was the most reliable of the bunch but again it did not at all increase attendance. So RMC already has quite a bad reputation with Cedar Fair. They would rather spend another few million dollars for a reliable, capacity monster, crowd pleasing and crowd attracting B&M.
And about the T-Rex; that's put on halt. Development is not continuing for now due to the lack of interest of parks. which I think makes sense, the T-Rex seems to not have a huge advantage to conventional coasters. The Single Rail design is only useful on a smaller scale since its cost effective there but on a larger track scale not really
T-rex will not be a thing for at least 7 years. In the interview for Theme park crazy on IAPPA 2019 RMC representative said that the development is not in action right now because they wanted a raptor to succeed and not enough recourses.
KD is not a park worthy of 25 to 30m coasters, disappointing results with I-305 & TTimbers lackluster response. KD is not a priority investment park & has not produced the ROI, CF has stated their priority parks 2 years ago. CF can get better ROI in fast growing markets at Wonderland and Carowinds or from the big 3 producers CP, Knotts & KI. KD is a bottom 1/3rd park in the chain now.

Maybe the timing works out and the S&S Axis prototype will be installed. It would likely be the very first of its type built and would be just like Volcano in that regard.

Considering that Six Flags St. Louis ( My home park) has not gotten a ground up coaster since 2008, KD complainers can cram it.

i think they plan to redo it cause if their retheming safari village to a jungle type setting volcanos are near jungle settings and since they demolished volcano for being outdated and faulty gives me hope their saving money to redo it either the exact way if was of have elements from it along with some new stuff added into it

This is a pretty “okay” decision, it makes sense since BGW doesn’t have something like this and i’m guessing the rotating seats could be a tribute to Crypt’s ride experience. Also hoping they make it well themed like Orion or Copperhead Strike!

By the time they’re ready to put in the larger addition in a few years, hopefully they can incorporate Anaconda’s plot of land if they’re going to get rid of that soon anyway!
ive always thought this made sense, and im happy this park is getting one. These are very fun rides and the GP will really like it hopefully
have you ever seen a line for a freespin? I rode the joker at both sfgad and sfne and it never had more than a 2-train wait, compared to the rest of the park, which had an hour wait. Definitely not a gp favourite...

I love free spins, I rode the joker at my home park probably 70 times since it opened a few years ago.

The enthusiast in me is like "why would they even think about this", but thinking in terms of the park being able to promote a new and unique coaster to this part of the country, it makes sense. A lot of the GP at Kings Dominion has never even seen anything like this except maybe on YT, so they will be super excited to be able to ride it. Kinda like B&M standups where back in the day. I feel like if it is themed right, like you said "not like a carnival ride", then it will do fine. Just my 2 cent

This so far has aged really well with the recent announcement. Hoping for a good replacement in a few years time for Volcano.
Man the last S&S coaster at KD was hypersonic, wish they were just making a better version of that than a 4D spin lol but you’re definitely spot on. They know that this will be perfect for the time being and that the general public will be all over it since chances are most of them have never even seen one of these before so they’ll be all over it. I’ve never been on one so I am a little excited to check it out.
I think these things are a really good ride for what they are. It definitely isn't a favorite of enthusiasts and purists but having been on 3-4 of them across the country, I've really come to appreciate them. I’ve been saying it would be hilarious if volcano got replaced by an S&S air launch, and maybe this is cedar fair attempting to start back up with them again. Not saying it will happen but I would say an air launch would be more than worthy to replace it, and an interesting tribute to

Why do I feel like they’ll get the extended model?
Honestly I tend to go on the one at SFNE almost every visit just because it almost never has a line when i go and sometimes you get a really good ride on them. Also if I am going to walk away from the 2 best coasters and go to the other side of the park to ride batman, i might as well just ride it. ( if you go to the waterpark, you can hit riddler, batman and joker before going in (because it opens 45 minutes after the park opens) and by the time you ride all 3 the water park is about to open and you have 3 rides already down right by the enterence)
Just trying to think outside of the box. If there is a lot of interest in the Axis coaster, and if I were S&S, I would tell clients that if they want priority access to buy an Axis coaster they need to buy a free spin first to reserve their place in line. Basically use the Axis model to leverage their other products.
When I first saw the title of this video I was like what? No! But your reasoning makes sense. I’d take this replacing the crypt over a winged coaster replacing Volcano. And we just got a big addition with Twisted Timbers.
What about Kings island?
Yes they just added Orion last year, but they have the plot where Vortex once stood and has not been replaced yet, and they have the back land behind banshee where part of Son of a beast used to be.
I will like to see volcano be replaced soon though.
If they want to compete with Busch Gardens, a wing Coaster would be cool, mainly Bc there aren’t many around besides GateKeeper in CP (apologies if there are more, that’s the only one I can think of.)

More proof KD is now a middle teir park. The Richmond area is not growing in population like Charlotte NC. The ride choices reflect this. The Intamin blockbusters did not move this park into the top 20 for attendance. I have KD in 5th place and may drop them to 6th depending on what CGA gets as their next big ride. There are 4 Marque parks at the top, then it drops off. We need the attendance from the top 30 USA parks, but Brian Sands over at TEA says it's too much work, so we only get a top 20 which half is the Disney and Universal parks.

Its simple, just build the best rides from cedar point in ohio at kings dominion since they are both cedar fair. Like the gatekeeper from cedar point (wing coaster) remake that in a different way at KD where the volcano was. knock down the avalanche and build the maverick from cedar point (semi-launch coaster) in its place. I like this idea in this video but hey cut some of those trees down and build the wicked twister that's at cedar point right there to replace the crypt. That's a hell of a line up.
I know this video is focused on KD, but it just got me thinking, is Drachen Spire really going to happen at BGW? I got so excited to see that they were making plans for another ride before they even finished building Pantheon, but I’m just not sure if it’s true.

That's painful. Anticipating a large B&M coaster for next year, and being smacked with an S&S free spin. That being said, it, like the Sky Rocket IIs, are known for filler. That being said, perhaps you'll get an even crazier coaster than originally predicted. (Perhaps plans for the Wing have been dropped and you'll get an S&S Axis. Unlikely, but possible.)
Yeah, I just can't stand cloned rides in general. If they're all the same, why would I be excited if they open up a new on at a different park?

Didn't know that they going to be removing Crypt that soon from the park. I never got a ride out of it, due to how it operated and how dizzy I might feel coming off of it afterward
Now avalanche has been shut down for the 2021 season as confirmed by the park on their website a few days ago.
I think this is very interesting and I feel Cedar Fair will make their 4D Free Spin way better than Six Flags’s 4D free spin. No licenses or advertisements, original layouts. Plus S&S probably learned some new tricks with the previous ones from feedback to make this one way better than the other ones.

I heard a theory that the Volcano replacement is an S&S coaster like Steel Curtain, Maxx Force, or maybe an Axis Coaster (which they’d tell S&S to get right to avoid another Hypersonic) and they were offered a cheap deal on a freespin as the Volcano replacement is developed.

That won't happen because it'll take another decade before they get another coaster and i doubt that the park could survive that long.
I just don’t think the free spin is a “filler attraction” for KD. Even if it’s not replacing Volcano, it doesn’t seem like CF is planning on investing in this park now or in the future.

I think the Volcano removal really put them in a tough spot that BGW is just making worse and worse.
A 4D Freespin seems like a good filler/appetizer, particularly since I think Anaconda might be on the chopping block in the next few years as well. The land occupied by Anaconda is across the midway from the (former) Volcano site, which would allow for a Gatekeeper-like crossing of the midway (to the space currently occupied by Anaconda's station). Given that B&M and Cedar Fair have shown a willingness to play around with RMC-like elements I wonder if they'll do a zero-G stall on a wing coaster (DO WANT)... But that would require it being much larger than the originally proposed replacement.
I suspect the BIG attraction will function as the "replacement" for both rides (Anaconda's removal will be announced followed by the announcement of the wing or another similarly large addition). If I had to guess, I'd bet that the Anaconda site is largely returned to just being water with the new addition.

Are we SURE that Six Flags didn't buy Cedar Fair?
In my opinion, I think this the best move for Cedar Fair. I was extremely worried that the park and chain would rush to replace such an iconic coaster and not necessarily replace it with a worthy successor. I think it is reasonable to believe a rush on a small B&M Wing coaster would of effected other plans throughout the chain and may have had a compounding negative effect, and KD is left with a coaster people don't think as a worthy replacement. Now, KD might get two coasters and a coaster worthy of replacing Volcano in timeline that works for the park and chain.
Highly unlikely. If this happens we can forget about a wing coaster ever coming to the park.
They're better off delaying the volcano replacement than putting this thing in.
They should get a Mondial Furiozo
This is weird to me as I have worked at Kings Dominion on several occasions. I was also on the iron work crew that installed the line railing for the Crypt back in 2003 or 2004. So having all of that work ripped out in 15 years seems sad to me. Having to paint all of that steel to look like bamboo was a pain in that ass.

This is a way better addition than a crappy basic wing coaster with the B&M vest restraints. Make one like Gatekeeper but with normal restraints and then it could be cool. Let it be a free spin. It's way better than a boomerang or an slc, or basically any endlessly cloned coaster (except for batman the ride clones). In the meantime they can plan something really good and perhaps between 2022-2023 blow our minds (you want me to blow up a MINE?) with something awesome in the coaster department and also get a new ride as well (maybe a zamperla endeavour?).

I mean I don't see them replacing volcano with a new coaster until 2025-2026 because before the pandemic cedar Fair wasn't really investing as frequent in Kings Dominion and it wasn't really one of its preferred parks and that may have to do with the fact that I threw a five was kind of a dud with the general public because of the intensity.. the thing is since the pandemic everything is up in the air and it's going to take to at least 2022 before things start to go back to normal for cedar Fair and even before covid hit hard cedar Fair announced that they are not going to do these large attractions as frequently as they were doing them.
So I do believe they will replace volcano blast coaster but not till probably 2025-2026

Wow. I didn’t know they had wrecked the actual volcano itself. So sad. As for this particular addition, I don’t know how they theme that for that area and have it not look like a carnival ride. A different coat of paint won’t cut it. Also seems like a strange ride for Cedar Fair, but on the other hand, they have to do something. They can’t just keep removing rides and have empty land.
