In about 1959 or 1960, as a youngster on holiday with family, at a stop in Northern France, my father and I met two American guys who had a Plymouth car (A Fury I think) with experimental turbine engine - Dad and I were very fascinated with this, and the guys showed us around the car and started it. Some information I have found suggests that several such cars were shipped to Europe for testing and evaluation in conjunction with a General Motors subsidiary, Simca Motors of France.
There is an excellent 200-page book, "Chrysler's Turbine Car; the Rise and Fall of Chrysler's Coolest Creation", by Steve Lehto. Foreword by Jay Leno. Very interesting read. Chrysler has always made some stunning designs but has never mastered quality control and reliability. Their ill-starred merger with Mercedes had disaster written all over it. And then not learning from their mistakes, they merged with Fiat! What in the hell were they thinking?! If the Orientals can manufacture perfect automobiles (yes, the styling leaves something us cold ), why is it that the U.S. and Europeans cannot do the same?
