This video was worth it for your facial expression when the self-made cover slipped off the shelf. That's a good selection of books. Not read any of them. 🤣

I’m excited for your further adventures in the Star Wars EU. The stand alones are hit or miss but I enjoyed almost all the series (Jedi academy, corelian, and especially the X- Wing books).

That’s awesome, I’m planning to dive into Xwing soon. The other two you mentioned are also high up my priority list. It’s great to have so many good ones to look forward to.

You're the only reviewer I've seen so far to give Mercy of the Gods a good review, most seem to think it's a big disappointment compared the Expanse series. I know what you mean about the nostalgia factor kicking in. I was more than a bit pissed when Disney declared all the Star Wars EU books non canon and then proceeded to cherry pick bits and pieces from some of them to bastardise badly. Would it really have been that hard to not make Luke & Han such complete loser deadbeats in the Disney trilogy of films, and Leia didn't exactly come out well either and that's even before I get started on the mostly abysmal TV series. I mean how do you fuck up Obi Wan & Darth Vader that badly. I'm going to go lie down in a darkened room until my blood pressure goes down now 😉. Another great video btw and Merry Christmas to you and your family and have a great holiday season, 👍❤️

Thank you - merry Christmas to you and yours also! I’m happy that I read Mercy of the Gods before having a chance to see any negative reviews because I’m sure they would’ve influenced me somehow. I know from Abraham’s fantasy writing that the first book is usually a base for amazingness that’s to come. And in this case I genuinely loved the base.
I am really disappointed in the direction Disney took with SW, so I can only hope (pun) the books will fill in what Disney missed. I agree - it shouldn’t have been that difficult to make it better.

@@TheObsessiveBooksellerregarding Mercy of God's reviews, a lot of the time you have to have a pretty good idea of what kind of tastes a reviewer has to get a good idea of what they say they like and dislike would be considered fair from your own point of view. I like seeing a few reviews of books I've loved, hated, and everything inbetween to have any idea. Sometimes you see a review and you're left wondering did we even read the same book? That's why when I find reviewers I really like and value their opinions I stick with them and take their recommendations seriously. People like yourself, Bookpilled, VintageSF, Science Fiction Reads, Cafe au Livre plus a few others across multiple genres are all reviewers I trust. You're definitely in my top 3 not just for your reviewing style but also I love your curating and collection sorting videos. You can't fake sincerity when it comes to the love of books and the pleasure of collecting them.
I think Disney thought they had a licence to print money when they bought lucasfilm and they didn't have to bother too much with coherent ideas and the right people in place to shape what to do with both Star Wars and Indiana Jones, Willow etc. They could have easily made films that pleased old fans as well as bringing in new generations of fans without ever needing to retread old ground. There's good and bad stuff in the EU books but there's a lot they could have translated to a wider audience while making it fresh and exciting too. Such a shame, hopefully other franchises are taking notes on how not to do it 😉

Am currently reading Colonyside, third book in the Planetside series. Love the series so far, thanks for talking me into it. Didn't realize there were going to be more books after Darkside. Yay!
Just finished Kingdoms of Death. I agree with your assessment, it was just a bit too much of the "thing". I like to take a break between Suneater books, they're all a little intense.

I agree - such heavy books, I find I need a break after each one as well.
Im thrilled you’re loving the Planetside series! Nothing worse than me endorsing a book that people end up hating haha.

The Sun Eater first book was interesting but it developed slowly too. I'm not sure I want to continue the series for that reason.

I’m thinking if you had issue with the pacing in the first, then the rest of the series might feel like a slog!

Great video Niki! I’m going to be trying out Suneater next year, and I definitely want to read more Scalzi. I’m not super into Star Trek either, but I am curious to try Redshirts.

I’m curious how you’d like Sun Eater. It seems to be hit or miss. I’m finding I liked the first half better than the second so far, but there’s still time.

Glad you liked The Mercy of Gods. Response has been mixed.
Zahn/Thrawn: I read them when they were new and did not like them. I enjoyed a couple of comic series that came out at the time; Tales of the Jedi and Dark Empire.
    Service Model DNF.
The Martian: The film did not use the best line in the book- My a$$hole is doing as much to keep me alive as my brain.

Per Service Model - did you make it far enough to the scene where they were clarifying literal vs figurative speech? That’s the turning point for me, but ultimately I wouldn’t recommend going back to it if you’d already thrown in the towel. Just curious!
