I'll never again buy a Beethoven, Chopin, or Franz Liszt CD collection, unless the pianist is Valentina Lisitsa. Whether or not she is is the best pianist out there doesn't matter. After all, art is, to varying degrees, subjective. The only thing that matters to me is: Valentina is the best pianist I've ever heard. Her interpretations of all the great composers is magical--like no one I've ever heard before. Merry Christmas, Valentina!
It’s easy to default to subjective nature of our experiences, but I challenge you to identify and argue the objective qualities! It’s not easy, but worth the pursuit. I agree, there is something special about valentinas interpretations that sets her apart, her performance of the waldstein alone is the most compelling performance I’ve ever heard! She gets the tempo and dynamics better than I thought possible. It’s incredible.

A technique so big, it just laughs at difficulties, a joy in sharing her discoveries that is infectious. This is very romantic Beethoven, but this is who she is! A natural musician, wild, untamable, the wind in her hair, her fingers flying over the keys, almost choreographically, a figure that dominates the piano and yet, just love to play! With such unbridled ability, natural musicality and headstrong showmanship, it is hard to imagine any teacher who could have taught her anything that she didn’t already know.
I remember you talking about this in the comments around 10 years ago! This project is on the works for so long because of its magnitude too, I support you Valentina, 100% you own the sonatas

Besides her outstanding interpretation for this piece, I just LOVE The way she 'dances' with glee with her fingers, smiling multiple times as she performs. You can tell she loves this piece!!

I love Valentina’s expression in the playing. The nuances are so subtle. I’ve listened to this played by several pianists, but every time I listen to her playing Waldstein, I smile to myself.

As a newbie to this channel, witnessing all these enthusiastic and eager comments about the long wait for this project is baffling. I mean, a TEN-year project and a TEN-year wait? Simply amazing. And also being a newbie to the classical world who mostly listens to whatever the radio channel plays or whatever loanable from the University's music collections, this might be the time to step up and try listening to a complete series.
You stumbled on this in the first day after posting; everyone else is a fan who got a notification. 10 years seems only reasonable - researching, listening, playing, falling in love with 32 different worlds of music. Andras Schiff gave a series of talks on each one of the sonatas. Still available as podcasts. I'd choose one or two and listen many times until you love them, or not. If you do, it's for life.

I just finished listening to all 32 piano sonatas that Barenboim recorded. It took three days for me to just to listen to them when I had time. I can't imagine how long it would take to memorize them all and play them to perfection. I'm super excited to look out for the completion of your project. I love # 13, op. 27 no. 1 the first quasi una fantasia, it will be amazing to hear you play this one. I'm getting the second book of Beethoven piano sonatas for Christmas as well, so this is a perfectly timed bit of inspiration for me to continue learning this great music. Thank you Valentina for your great virtuosity and example for aspiring pianist everywhere. 🙂
