What a great day out. Despite multiple visits to Hunstanton with my late wife, I've never been to the the area you visited at the start. So much to see there, I must try to get back. The foot of the cliffs is a great walk, and our dogs loved it. Your correct pronunciation of Hunstanton was quite a surprise, as most visitors say it the way it is spelled. You can walk along the beach or drive to Old Hunstanton where there is a pub, shops, cafe and the Lifeboat station. Hunstanton has 2 boats, one of which is a hovercraft.
The farm shop looks amazing, lots to do there, it seems to have expanded a lot in recent years. Next time you are in Thornham visit the Lifeboat Inn. Dog friendly, and always good food, we stayed there a couple of times. My wife's birthday was 27th December, and we always went for a walk along the beach and lunch at the Lifeboat. Thanks again!

At 9:26 - if you take the road on the left to the Holme beach car park, you can walk across the golf course and then left over the dunes all the way (about a mile) to the Old Hunstanton life boat house. There's a welcoming cafe next to it. A great little hike and any anytime of the year. Sshhh keep it quiet, its my favourite

'Sunny Hunny' is on the Norfolk side of The Wash which opens out on to the North Sea. Your mentioning of an old settlement (Saxon?) reminds me that there's a Saxon site in Peterborough at Flag Fen. It's an interesting insight to what life was like at the time.

Nice video Jess, what a lovely part of the world you guys are stationed at, and the weather was perfect for you.
The story re the airman is very interesting. Over here in Liverpool there was a huge US bomber base in the war at burtonwood near Warrington. I worked nearby for a while early nineties and a few of our customers were former personnel at the base who had married the local girls and stayed here in the NW. Very nice people with interesting stories. Thanks for keeping us entertained. 👍 J

I lived in King's Lynn for 5 years, and everybody calls the town to the North of it - Hun Stan Ton. Norfolk, (which is Nor Fuk)😂 dialet traditional called the town Hun Ston but nobody really does that anymore. It sounds right in a Norfolk accent, but not in yours for some reason, so Hunstanton in full in OK. I can't wait to see if you dare to try going to Happisburgh, because that is always pronounced Haze Brr', the end is not Brew, or Bro, you'll need to work on that, no doubt, as it's sound is short, don't stretch the rr. xx

English place names can be tricky. Trottiscliffe (/ˈtrɒzli/ (TROZ-lee) is a village in Kent, England about 2.5 miles (4 km) north west of West Malling, West Malling (/ˈmɔːlɪŋ/ MAW-ling, historically Town Malling) is a market town in the Tonbridge and Malling district of Kent, England. It has a population of 2,590.
The Pilgrims' Way runs near Trottiscliffe.
It is often incorrectly spelled Trosley [citation needed] after Trosley Country Park at the top of the North Downs, which was once part of the Trosley Towers Estate. The spelling Trottesclyve appears with nearby Hallyng in 1396.
Labelled as Trotterscliffe on the Ordnance Survey map published in 1870.
Gillingham (/ˈɡɪlɪŋəm/ (GHIL-ing-əm) is a town and civil parish in the Blackmore Vale area of Dorset, England. It lies on the B3095 and B3081 roads, approximately four miles (six kilometres) south of the A303 trunk road and five miles (eight kilometres) northwest of Shaftesbury. It is the most northerly town in the county. In the 2011 census the civil parish had a population of 11,756. The neighbouring hamlets of Peacemarsh, Bay and Wyke have become part of Gillingham as it has expanded. Peacemarsh, not to be confused with Peasmarsh where Sir Paul McCartney MBE, musician and former member of The Beatles, lived/lives in a farmhouse in the village. Peasmarsh also was home to Maria Ann Smith (née Sherwood, d. 9 March 1870), from whom comes the name of the Granny Smith apple, was born in 1799.
Gillingham is pronounced with a hard initial "g" (/ɡ/), unlike Gillingham, Kent, which is pronounced with a soft "g" (/dʒ/). Wikipedia.

Howdy! Me again. 😉Once again, a great video. 👍
The Flood of 31st January 1953 was indeed the most devastating natural disaster to hit the UK in the Twentieth Century. As well as the Scottish and English coasts, it also affected the coasts of Belgium and The Netherlands. Over 2,500 people lost their lives. Back then there was not the understanding of how huge tidal surges formed, nor was there any effective warning system that could have drastically lowered the death toll. The best available back then was the BBC Radio or even just a Policeman riding around on a bicycle with a whistle! Sadly the surge hit during darkness which only exasperated the situation.

Your fellow American, Reis Leming, was honoured for his bravery in rescuing so many people in the storm. For this he was awarded the UK's highest award for gallantry, typically by civilians, in circumstances where military honours are not appropriate: The George Medal. The presentation was made by the very young Queen Elizabeth II who had come to the throne less than two years earlier.

The fencing that you love is made in the same way as traditional "Hurdles" that were constructed of "Wattle", where thin flexible branches are interwoven through upright wooden stakes. The same form of construction was used in "Wattle and Daub" walls where "Daub", a plaster like substance, usually made from a mixture of clay, straw and either cow or horse dung, was pushed by hand into the gaps before being allowed to dry. It was then coated in Lime Wash to protect it, a job that had to be regularly repeated as the wash was not very durable.

(A quick, rather pedantic point: Hunstanton is on the east coast so those houses were overlooking the North Sea, not an Ocean, although it was known as The German Ocean until World War I when it was renamed here for fairly obvious reasons.)

The George Cross is awarded to civilians for the highest levels of bravery . Also, Queen Elizabeth did not personally award Reis, as she was in mourning for her Grandmother Queen Mary. Reis was presented to the Queen during a later visit to the UK.
      Regards.
