when i was a college student, i had this hideous mustard-yellow desk chair (and not the pretty shade of mustard-yellow that became trendy recently, but rather the exact shade of week-old dried mustard). it worked fine, it just wasn't comfortable to sit in for long periods, so i needed something better for doing classwork. the chair was ugly as shit, but i felt like i could play off of that, so i made a craigslist post offering up my "ugly mustard chair" to whoever could withstand its presence an older woman came to pick it up, and she gushed to me how excited she was for my ugly mustard chair, that it was the perfect vibe for her living room and she was so happy to find it. it gave me a new appreciation for that silly old chair. i hope it gave her many years of seated satisfaction!

The clear pastic tent is a tiny affordable greenhouse. That's why it gets so hot. The windows are to cool it down if it gets too hot. We used to have one in our backyard.

hey danny the spider at 28:45 looks to be a male grass spider of the genus agelenopsis. they’re some of my favorites and this time of year you’ll see the males in your house hoping to find a female’s web to breed. they’re sexually dimorphic with the males having those long, thin abdomens and more pronounced pedipalps (closer to the mouth). you can also tell it’s a grass spider due to the pronounced spinnerets on his back half! good spider find but this fella was not part of the box curse he was likely looking for a mate. to clarify i do think your box is cursed

I envy you so much. I’m a bird watcher and I’m trying to get into iNaturalist instead of just eBird but good god the bug and spider stuff creeps me out. Sometimes I put the filter for everything but bugs on the map so it won’t show me pictures of them lol. Just reading this I feel like that spider is crawling down my back😭 you’re built stronger than me for sure. I swear I’m gonna need to actually get therapy to start looking at bugs with this kind of curiosity and neutrality and appreciation😭

When I worked at Sephora every return went to the landfill regardless of anything. We couldn't even take them or give them away they had to be destroyed and desposed of. It was depressing especially the day after black Friday when everyone came back to return their impulse purchases 🙄
In terms of makeup and cosmetics it's unfortunately a hygiene thing. You can't put someone's lip product back on the shelves. And most other cases comes down to sheer impracticality or just plain cheapness
I really wonder if requiring companies to be transparent about what happens to returned items would convince some people to just keep them. Like if I impulse bought some mascara or it just didn’t work as well as I hoped- being informed that it would just be sent directly to a landfill when returning would definitely convince me to just keep it. Like I get why makeup returns just get thrown out, but I doubt many people are making that connection when returning.

Hi as someone who works in warehouses with cardboard. We have a thing we call cardboard mites, they are like dustmites. I break out in hives and rashes from cardboard because of how dirty and how many dustmites are in them. Could also be mold or cardboard splinters. Yes sometimes you can get cardboard dust stuck in your skin. You never know. I've learned to always wear gloves and not to work in warehouses with severe allergies to dust.
Thanks for highlighting the landfill issue. We buy too much and we don't need all this stuff. I volunteer for a charity that works to reduce textile waste and I'm a huge evangelist for reusing perfectly good textiles and learning to sew and mend your clothes.
You seem like a great person to ask! Do you know if it's possible to genuinely recycle old clothes? Like is that a thing that textile waste organizations do? Cause I'm trying to clean out my closet from when I was young and not all of the stuff can be reworn by someone, plus I know that most donated clothes end up in landfill anyways.

The store I work at (it's a small family owned store, not just an online store) sells some things on Amazon and earlier this year someone that bought a like $300 wool blanket from us wanted to return it and there was a big fight with Amazon (not the customer) because Amazon wanted to just throw the blanket away instead of sending it back to us so we wouldn't be out the money and the blanket. It is insane how difficult Amazon is.
This is crazy to see you talk about this! I do this job at Lowes. They use to throw away so many returns but I changed that. I’m the RTM clerk and handle everything returned to our store. I either mark it 1/2 price, send it back to the vendor or donate it. Sometimes we have to throw stuff away cause it’s damaged, but I try to avoid that.
That's how how we got our kitchen sink! It was a custom sized sink that ended up getting returned but we happened to need to super small sink (at the time). It was marked down half price and the Lowes store guy marked it down further for us (I'm sure to get rid of it). We bought it, then saved it for three years, then installed it in our renovated kitchen. It is still one of our best budget finds 😂 Thanks for what you do!

It's one of the reasons why in person shopping is better for the environment, because you can look at the item, gauge it's size and feel it. Returnsfor in store puchases are well under 10%. Whereas for online purchases it's 50% of items are returned.
If people didn't buy junk in the first place, they'd stop making so much of it. Almost all of the stuff he unboxed here is literally trash as soon as it's made, and almost all of it is unnecessary even if it was good quality.
My grandmother has that bird feeder and basically it just tells her when a bird is there so she can watch them!! And yeah it's kinda just like a ring camera and detects any movement. We see squirrels a lot!! We also see the birds fight over the food so that's very fun.
So that standing tent has a zipper that allows you to see out the top--I'm quite sure it's designed that way so that a shower head can fit into that gap and potentially provide privacy for one of those outdoor shower stations you see at campgrounds and beaches sometimes.

It can't tell you what bird you are seeing on the camera, it would be magic, not any AI known today. It's a simple camera with a motion sensor, it just registers motion, starts capturing video and you can access the video files from the app on the phone. People slap the word "AI" on everything electronic just like they do "organic" on everything food-related. It doesn't mean anything.

We had random (or sometimes, not so random) mandatory 4 hours of overtime after our shifts to help with the Amazon side. What did that work entail? We received hundreds and thousands of cubic yard boxes of stuff from Amazon. Literally anything and everything. Phones, computers, speakers, toys, photo frames, dildos, glasses, perfume, pens, solar lawn lights, face wash, clothes, you name it. We all had to sign a non-pilfering agreement (aka, don't take anything) because some of it was hazardous. Aka, makeup that went bad, propane gas cylinders that were faulty, etc. But MOST of it was perfectly good stuff. We had to trash all of it. Nobody stole anything 👀 but I had good pens I'd love to give you more details and tell you more about the disposal process!!

I relate so hard to the facebook marketplace struggle. Im cleaning out my parents home and am giving away a bunch of furniture for free. All anyone has to do is pick it up. They'll make plans to pick it up but not show up. Stop messaging mid conversation. They want me to deliver (or in one particularly shocking case, pay THEM for the gas money to pick it up). They want other things not mentioned anywhere in any listing. Etc. Its crazy.
I can't drive so sometimes I ask for things to be delivered to me when I buy. I will pay the seller extra to do so if requested. I don't get people who insist that delivery must be free. If they need it delivered that badly, paying extra for delivery should be a possibility they need to take into account.
Yeah really. I was giving away a couch for free, and I'd say about 9 people ghosted before some college boys came by and grabbed it up. Also some were absolutely outraged that they'd have to re-attach the arms (only way to get it out of our house) even though re-attaching them was literally just slide and click into place...

A lot of those tents could be donated to homeless encampments or grassroots orgs that work with the homeless. Sweeps are pretty brutal in Georgia, and when unhoused folks get displaced they also loose their medications and documents as well. Having a safe place to sleep is something, at the least.

Fun fact: those weren't mosquito bites! They were bites from a cicada mite. They lay their eggs in dead cicadas. Normally, there are only the annual cicadas, which limits the number of eggs that can be laid. But in cicada year? They're everywhere. Marketplace buyers are 10% chill, 70% time-wasting bullshitters, and 20% scammers or bots. Ive been on there for years and some items ive given up on selling and just donated because i got 20+ different messages and no one followed through. The last person i sold to showed up at our house in the middle of the night while i was at work, after failing to show up for the previous 3 meetings we planned. My bf was home and they made the transaction, but i was angry that this irresponsible fool couldnt read directions or keep plans.

I work at an animal shelter and Amazon occasionally stops by to drop off several HUGE pallets of pet-related returns. The last drop off literally included dozens of $500+ robot litterboxes that seemingly had never been used, just open box. It's mostly unused food and litter and stuff but it's always a fun day to see what we got!
This is the exact same thing that the storage wars people do. Except they own pawn shops and thrift stores, so they actually are more likely to make those profits than random people doing this for a hobby
I used to work for a guy that did this. Basically would buy pallets of returned big screen tvs. He’d pay us just to plug them in and make sure they work. He’d sell them at a huge discount and we still made really good money just testing them

On the rusted pan - I was shopping for steak knives looking at a Faberware set, and a lot of recent reviews said they couldn't be stainless steel as claimed because they rusted after a single wash/ contact with liquid. And pictures on pictures from different reviews of the same thing, so many rusted knives. So it's like they're really making things to not even be used once (if you wash before using), or not more than once. I just returned a couple shirts to Costco I bought online and the fabric felt nice but the cut was crazy, far from human-shaped. And a couple shirts that both the cut and fabric were really bad. Shopping sucks these days. It's really depressing seeing the wasted resources, and time of the person who made it, and my time if I chose to return or my money if I don't have the time. The gas used shipping and returning. My wardrobe and general things get older and older with a lack of suitable replacements. I sew, I thrift, I jerryrig, I repair when possible. But this market is unsustainable on many levels.
there are tons of Liquidation stores across the US where these boxes go in HUGE quantities. i’ve got one next to the Target i work at. they have massive bins full of items. every single item is the same price, say $14 on day one. you could find a $300 apple pencil or literal dirt. it’s honestly pretty cool. the prices go down by the day too. so by the last day of the week it’s 25 cents each

That's weird cuz I worked as a tech repair guy in a company that had a contract with Amazon. They were the only client there and we got tons of electronics daily to repair or check if it's even broken. And it was a massive, hangar-like facility with huge storage spaces. It was in Europe though so laws might be different etc.
Re the box being cursed: I wonder if the bites are related to the fever, sluggishness etc. The bites seem like they could be spider bites. Redness, itchiness, fever, headache, sweating and muscle pain are common symptoms that can occur after a spider bite according to Healthline. As for the sneezing there’s probably an airborne allergen in the box, assuming it’s not dust, my guess would be insect matter or fungal/mold spores. when i was a college student, i had this hideous mustard-yellow desk chair (and not the pretty shade of mustard-yellow that became trendy recently, but rather the exact shade of week-old dried mustard). it worked fine, it just wasn't comfortable to sit in for long periods, so i needed something better for doing classwork. the chair was ugly as shit, but i felt like i could play off of that, so i made a craigslist post offering up my "ugly mustard chair" to whoever could withstand its presence
an older woman came to pick it up, and she gushed to me how excited she was for my ugly mustard chair, that it was the perfect vibe for her living room and she was so happy to find it. it gave me a new appreciation for that silly old chair. i hope it gave her many years of seated satisfaction!

hey danny the spider at 28:45 looks to be a male grass spider of the genus agelenopsis. they’re some of my favorites and this time of year you’ll see the males in your house hoping to find a female’s web to breed. they’re sexually dimorphic with the males having those long, thin abdomens and more pronounced pedipalps (closer to the mouth). you can also tell it’s a grass spider due to the pronounced spinnerets on his back half! good spider find but this fella was not part of the box curse he was likely looking for a mate. to clarify i do think your box is cursed

I envy you so much. I’m a bird watcher and I’m trying to get into iNaturalist instead of just eBird but good god the bug and spider stuff creeps me out. Sometimes I put the filter for everything but bugs on the map so it won’t show me pictures of them lol. Just reading this I feel like that spider is crawling down my back😭 you’re built stronger than me for sure. When I worked at Sephora every return went to the landfill regardless of anything. We couldn't even take them or give them away they had to be destroyed and desposed of. It was depressing especially the day after black Friday when everyone came back to return their impulse purchases 🙄

I really wonder if requiring companies to be transparent about what happens to returned items would convince some people to just keep them. Like if I impulse bought some mascara or it just didn’t work as well as I hoped- being informed that it would just be sent directly to a landfill when returning would definitely convince me to just keep it. Like I get why makeup returns just get thrown out, but I doubt many people are making that connection when returning.

Hi as someone who works in warehouses with cardboard. We have a thing we call cardboard mites, they are like dustmites. I break out in hives and rashes from cardboard because of how dirty and how many dustmites are in them. Could also be mold or cardboard splinters. Yes sometimes you can get cardboard dust stuck in your skin. You never know. I've learned to always wear gloves and not to work in warehouses with severe allergies to dust.

The store I work at (it's a small family owned store, not just an online store) sells some things on Amazon and earlier this year someone that bought a like $300 wool blanket from us wanted to return it and there was a big fight with Amazon (not the customer) because Amazon wanted to just throw the blanket away instead of sending it back to us so we wouldn't be out the money and the blanket. It is insane how difficult Amazon is.

This is crazy to see you talk about this! I do this job at Lowes. They use to throw away so many returns but I changed that. I’m the RTM clerk and handle everything returned to our store. I either mark it 1/2 price, send it back to the vendor or donate it. Sometimes we have to throw stuff away cause it’s damaged, but I try to avoid that.
That's how how we got our kitchen sink! It was a custom sized sink that ended up getting returned but we happened to need to super small sink (at the time). It was marked down half price and the Lowes store guy marked it down further for us (I'm sure to get rid of it). We bought it, then saved it for three years, then installed it in our renovated kitchen. It is still one of our best budget finds 😂 Thanks for what you do!

It's one of the reasons why in person shopping is better for the environment, because you can look at the item, gauge it's size and feel it. Returnsfor in store puchases are well under 10%. Whereas for online purchases it's 50% of items are returned.

It can't tell you what bird you are seeing on the camera, it would be magic, not any AI known today. It's a simple camera with a motion sensor, it just registers motion, starts capturing video and you can access the video files from the app on the phone. Guys. DANNY. I work in the environmental industry. I used to work for a certain company, and Amazon was one of our biggest, if not our biggest, clients. We had random (or sometimes, not so random) mandatory 4 hours of overtime after our shifts to help with the Amazon side. What did that work entail?
We received hundreds and thousands of cubic yard boxes of stuff from Amazon. Literally anything and everything. Phones, computers, speakers, toys, photo frames, dildos, glasses, perfume, pens, solar lawn lights, face wash, clothes, you name it. We all had to sign a non-pilfering agreement (aka, don't take anything) because some of it was hazardous. Aka, makeup that went bad, propane gas cylinders that were faulty, etc. But MOST of it was perfectly good stuff.
We had to trash all of it. Nobody stole anything 👀 but I had good pens

Fun fact: those weren't mosquito bites! They were bites from a cicada mite. They lay their eggs in dead cicadas. Normally, there are only the annual cicadas, which limits the number of eggs that can be laid. But in cicada year? They're everywhere. Source: I live in Chicagoland and was freaking out about these weird intense bug bites, so I asked a doctor.

Marketplace buyers are 10% chill, 70% time-wasting bullshitters, and 20% scammers or bots. Ive been on there for years and some items ive given up on selling and just donated because i got 20+ different messages and no one followed through.
The last person i sold to showed up at our house in the middle of the night while i was at work, after failing to show up for the previous 3 meetings we planned. My bf was home and they made the transaction, but i was angry that this irresponsible fool couldnt read directions or keep plans.

I work at an animal shelter and Amazon occasionally stops by to drop off several HUGE pallets of pet-related returns. The last drop off literally included dozens of $500+ robot litterboxes that seemingly had never been used, just open box. It's mostly unused food and litter and stuff but it's always a fun day to see what we got!

I used to work for a guy that did this. Basically would buy pallets of returned big screen tvs. He’d pay us just to plug them in and make sure they work. He’d sell them at a huge discount and we still made really good money just testing them

On the rusted pan - I was shopping for steak knives looking at a Faberware set, and a lot of recent reviews said they couldn't be stainless steel as claimed because they rusted after a single wash/ contact with liquid. And pictures on pictures from different reviews of the same thing, so many rusted knives. So it's like they're really making things to not even be used once (if you wash before using), or not more than once. I just returned a couple shirts to Costco I bought online and the fabric felt nice but the cut was crazy, far from human-shaped. And a couple shirts that both the cut and fabric were really bad. Shopping sucks these days. It's really depressing seeing the wasted resources, and time of the person who made it, and my time if I chose to return or my money if I don't have the time. The gas used shipping and returning. My wardrobe and general things get older and older with a lack of suitable replacements. I sew, I thrift, I jerryrig, I repair when possible. But this market is unsustainable on many levels.

there are tons of Liquidation stores across the US where these boxes go in HUGE quantities. i’ve got one next to the Target i work at. they have massive bins full of items. every single item is the same price, say $14 on day one. you could find a $300 apple pencil or literal dirt. it’s honestly pretty cool. the prices go down by the day too. so by the last day of the week it’s 25 cents each

That's weird cuz I worked as a tech repair guy in a company that had a contract with Amazon. They were the only client there and we got tons of electronics daily to repair or check if it's even broken. And it was a massive, hangar-like facility with huge storage spaces. It was in Europe though so laws might be different etc.

Re the box being cursed: I wonder if the bites are related to the fever, sluggishness etc. The bites seem like they could be spider bites. Redness, itchiness, fever, headache, sweating and muscle pain are common symptoms that can occur after a spider bite according to Healthline. As for the sneezing there’s probably an airborne allergen in the box, assuming it’s not dust, my guess would be insect matter or fungal/mold spores.
