The World's Lightest Steel Road Bike | 5.42kg of Marvellous Metal

  • This Yasujiro Svelte weighs just 5.42kg, which we reckon makes it the lightest steel road bike in the world. This frame is constructed from the brand’s premium double-butted Ultimate tubing.
    The walls of this tubing are a mere 0.35mm thick (!) at their thinnest point. This ultralight tubing is at the heart of this remarkable bike and we are utterly in love with it.
    The build of the bike is (no surprise) fairly premium, but it doesn’t feature nearly as much crazy carbon exotica as you might imagine.
    Get the full (0% fat) scoop on the bike on BikeRadar.com; www.bikeradar....

      1.24 Kg is impressive, this is about 300 grams lighter than a silver fillet brazed 55cm Ishiwata 015 frame I put together about 25 years ago. If I had used 753 Track chain stays and not used a brazed steel seat clamp it may have lost another 100 grams.
      It was similar to a Vitus 979 in stiffness and very lively but much more comfy. It was painted luminous hot pink and had 753 forks.

      Please use a medium 56cm. Never use a small frame size. Does not do justice. Yeas size xxs can do 4.8kg as well. Size what...

    Nice bike. You can get Reynolds 953 a whisker thinner than that (0.3mm at the thinnest point, 0.5 at the butts) but the real weight saving would be the paint as 953 is stainless so you wouldn't need any.

    • @ohshitnotanotherknob

      Maybe but often it's good practice on steel frames to have a drain hole as it's quite easy for water to get in via capillary action down the side of the seat post.

    • @ThunderousProduction

      The bearings are sealed from the inside and the rotating spindle should have enough clearance for grime to get in there and not cause too much mayhem.

    To everyone complaining about the bottom bracket holes, dont be ridiculous! This bike is for, at most, riding on a blistering summer's day, not more than 2.35km to the nearest cafe for 1-5 cups of espresso. U must then have ones significant other pick you up in the range rover for the return trip. The Hungarian visla may ride in said range rover only if separated sufficiently from the bike

      The frame is steel but everything else is carbon or aluminum. @@crooney82 A lot of people didnt stop wanting steel and external cable routing, it's all about a machine being fit for its intended purpose, though I admit the bike in the video has little merit as anything but an object of desire or perhaps a technical exercise.

    I have 2 questions, I know that steel framed bikes tend to have a really nice ride quality, so when will it be tested on the road? And with the cut outs under the bottom bracket, wouldn't that be a setup for enormous amounts of corrosion and weakening the integrity of the bottom bracket and cranks?

    • @feltusfeicit
      @feltusfeicit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      BB cutouts were pretty standard on road bikes for decades. I have two frames with cutouts. They are not ideal for wet climates though. That said, my Ciocc is made of a basic Columbus and was used as a winter commuter in Scotland in a previous life. The frame is quite heavily patinad with rust, but none is structural. Most high quality steels don't decay like the underside of a car, and modern BBs have a sealed sleeve to protect the crank (old 3 piece BBs had sleeves too, they just weren't as good at keeping out water and grit).

    • @kaite8371
      @kaite8371 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In fact the hole protects you from (too much) rust on the inside of the saddle tube. Water comes in through the seat post clamp anyway. So it must go somewhere.

    • @KekusMagnus
      @KekusMagnus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      you need those holes to drain water inside the frame, it would be far more likley to rust without them

    I'm building a NOS Miyata Team frame that is also Tange tubing. I'll have to ask the guy @ the bike shop doing the assembly how much the frame weighs. It's either 48 or 49cm. I've had it for years & am just now building. I found the perfect Campy group & have Spinergy wheels on another bike that will worko. Also have some blue anodized Wolber rims & a front Chorus hub with the grease port. Need a rear hub but haven't spent any time looking for it. I am not trying to build the lightest bike. I already did that with a Lemonde carbon bike. I got it down to 16.2 lbs. Without getting tubular tires or super light carbon wheels & swapping out some parts that weren't picked for weight in the beginning of the build. I became a gram weenie about a year after I'd been riding it. I know if I throw enough money @ it I can lighten it substantially but I have other projects now. I'd like to see that bike & pick it up for comparison to mine. It's nice. 👍🚲

    Tange is, when what you tell someone that they are stupid but you don't want to sound rude. You only say this to a person that you have a close relationship with. Rudeness factor depends on how sweet and melodic you say it. Ranging from flirty, to comedic, to non-challant, to borderly rude and anything in between. (Tanga is the rude version)

      @@sergarlantyrell7847 you need the aero more than the light weight. You’re going to produce a higher average wattage than a smaller rider, which will compensate for the higher weight of a larger bike. The new aero-oriented bikes are really something.

    Well, 1700gr the frame in size 52 mm (yasujirobike.com) is not the lightest steel... I have a fausto coppi columbus nemo in size 55mm and its only 1580gr, and is not the lighter by far. Here maybe just talk about very interesting and super light components with a good steel frame. Its a begining

    • @giegue.8550
      @giegue.8550 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the title is kinda misleading since basically only the frame is steel, the other components are carbon/aluminum... And i have a Bernardi italian road bike frameset made in the 90s with Columbus Genius size 56 that weighs only 1690gr... Since the tubes were shorter in this yasujiro frame i was expecting a lighter frame than 1700gr, considering it's a modern tubeset and with drillings too...

    • @miquelmiralles-royo5504
      @miquelmiralles-royo5504 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@giegue.8550 Yes, it is very curious. Today, after 20-30 years, the best steel frames are heaviers, not by far but heaviers, that the good old ones in mid late's 90's... Columbus, for instance, discontinued Genius and Nemo, and nowadays are making heavier sets, top of range, spirit and xcr, and those genius/nemo are very reliable, strong, stiff, etc. Strange...
