If you're going 65, you should be at least 4 car lengths behind the person in front of you. This helps with safety, traffic, etc. The rule of thumb is every 10 miles per hour youre going should be 10 feet in distance from the car in front of you. My friend works for the DOT and studies traffic patterns, and when one person taps their breaks in a metropolitan area like LA, you can actually detect the ripple effect from up to 100 miles away.
