To all high school students viewing this: Having taught this play several times, I am unsure about Dr. Thug's assertion that MacDuff's soldier's shields were made from the wood of Birnam forest. Instead, I believe that they cut off branches from the trees and held them up while advancing on the castle to mask themselves and to distort the number of soldiers they appeared to be. In effect, this would literally create the illusion that the forest was marching towards the castle.

Shields made of wood? That's incorrect.
The soldiers carry branches cut from the trees of Birnam to 'disguise their number'; so that people watching from the castle cannot accurately guess how many soldiers are approaching, as the long branches held by soldiers at the front make it hard to see those behind. Thus, does 'Birnam wood come to Dunsinane'.

As a theatre major, this is quite possibly the best and most effective summation I’ve seen of Macbeth. We need pitches like this to keep or make people slightly interesting in Shakespeare. It’s fun and crazy shit to work with , and so much fun to watch when the actors know what they’re saying, but instead we tend to opt for teaching it coldly devoid of life in English classes. This video is encouraging, to say the very least, that communicating Shakespeare can be fun and violent, and manic, and enjoyable.

The text never specifically states how the woods were used to create shields. In fact, it seemed that they just used them for cover to remain incognito up until a point, in which case they dropped the branches and charged. If they were shields, they would have had no reason to just drop them

I absolutely loved the way that this play handled the guilt of Duncan's murder. (it's a loooong one)
The sin of Duncan's death had opposite effects on the personalities of Macbeth and his wife. Macbeth goes from a goody two-shoes to a hardened tyrant. And the Lady goes from power hungry bitch to a paranoid, hallucinating sleepwalker.
It's a fantastic, completely believable role reversal. The play could have even left out the idea of fate and prophecy and witchcraft, and just been a story about Lady Macbeth's manipulation. It would start with Lady revealing the opportunity to Macbeth, and end with Lady's funeral.
And anyone notice how similar this is to the Garden of Eden story? Lady arguably committed the original sin by convincing Macbeth to kill, but Macbeth actually committed the murder. Like how the snake convinced the first woman to bite the forbidden fruit, and then gave it to man, who took an even bigger bite.
I guess if it's really going for that parallel, then we would need witches to relate to the snake. I guess what I'm saying is that this play is perfect the way it is.
TL;DR - Love Macbeth, Love Thug Notes, and look forward to many more awesome videos.

I love Thug Notes and especially like the analysis in this one; I hadn't thought much about the ill-fitting clothes. One small quarrel: Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane is more literal than the wood of the shields; the soldiers use branches from the trees in Birnam Wood to disguise their movements. By the time Macbeth sees them it looks like Birnam Wood has come to Dunsinane.
