The word Legend is over-used these days. Jack Brabham was the only man EVER to design his own car and win a Formula One World Drivers Championship with it. He was the pioneer of rear engines. He was part of the Bruce McLaren story too having acted as a father figure for him and smoothed his entry to F1. He was also a gentleman. A modest man who had every right to not be modest. Sir Jack Brabham was a Giant of motor racing and an Australian that makes me proud to be from Australia. One of Australias finest sons. Rest in Peace Sir Jack.
@David O'Reilly I 100% agree with your assessment of the great man and well deserved Knight a modest and approachable guy, even a little shy at times, I remember standing next to him at the podium presentation at Brands Hatch of his two sons Gary and David in about 1988 ,his boys had just won both classes of an F3 race, and their proud father was standing next to me in the crowd, just very unassuming taking photos of his lads, my son who was about 14 at the time was going to try to get the Brabham boys autographs, I said to my son "why don't get the autograph of a three times world champion" Sir Jack was happy to sign my sons book, despite my son having absolutely no idea at that time who he was, a great man.
The suburb of Brabham, north west of Perth is named after Jack. Not far from where he competed in the Australian Grand Prix at Caversham Airfield Raceway. Such a wonderful tribute and it's an honor to live there.
He is. The issue with him was... Everyone else around him were prats (Collins, Hawthorne, a bit Mc Laren) or nobles/gents (Moss, Fangio) He was quite the maverick, so he was not generally liked. Great pilot, but my father called him 'that weasel Brabham!', which was rather unusual for him.
Sir Jack, a nicer man you could not have met, yet he would have to have been the greatest Australian ambassador, driver, engineer, businessman we ever had. Sad to say, the likes I doubt we will see again.
Walter Lindrum - so good, they changed the rules of billiards to slow him down, and he still couldn't be beaten. Sir Donald Bradman - so good, the English had to resort to dangerous bowling tactics, and he still couldn't be beaten. Sir Jack Brabham - so good, he designed, built and drove his own car to a world championship. Aussie legends.
Good stuff. Was hoping it was the documentary I saw on Seven Mate TV in Australia where Jack discussed the development of the Repco V8 race engines. Especially how Jack chose the out of production aluminium small Oldsmobile V8 giving the reason that it had an extra head stud over the similar Buick block that many thought was the basis of the double world championship winning engine.
Underrated is the best damn word! Back then Australia was run by the poms and all we heard was Stirling Moss and that bunch of pommy drivers. We heard stuff all about Jack much to our shame.
Nothing about his 4 Indianapolis attempts. He placed 9th in his first attempt in 1960 in a Cooper, which was the first rear-engined Indy car of that era, and which led to the total takeover of rear-engined cars in Indy racing. His other three tries were in Brabhams. Another driver and racing car builder Brabham mentored was Dan Gurney. Gurney had a very promising few years driving for Brabham in F1 before he went on to start building and driving his own Eagle racers. Brabham's cars were immensely successful in F1, but not so much in Indy racing. Gurney's cars were pretty much the opposite .
Brabham did not build as many Indycars as Gurney did but, instead, sold the rights to copy his cars, primarily the BT-11. There were several with one, as a Brawner, winning the 500 and many finishing well.
Mclaren could have been the second person to win a championship in a car of his own design saw Jack and Ron taurenac at a book signing before his death. Got two books and a signature on a card I printed out of the cooper at Indianapolis at a signing at Kogarah Sydney.. I also stood behind him and Stirling moss during an interview at the 1976 Bathurst 1000, true legends and heroes all of them..
You had a champion when you had a thorough knowledge of your car... See Graham Hill and Jim Clark... Their Lotuses were made of tough candy, yet they achieved miracles. People like to quote Hamilton's whines about tires... At those times, you could get to the finish line pushing your car because it was undrivable. So legends like Moss made the best out of caramel cars -great driver mediocre car. I see him performing better as an endurance race driver at times, but he was amazing at speed too. His catch was, more often than not, his car.
TERRIBLE video, Annoying background music makes it hard to hear what is being said. A lot of stock footage that had nothing to do with Jack too. Who made this , a 12 year old? Get a professional and do it right. And - sorry Jack, Sir Sterling outlived you.............. Respect to you both

He is so underrated, you never hear him mentioned among the all time greats.
Agreed. He won a title aged 40, and was well-placed early on in the championship in 1970, aged 44!
RIP and long live Sir Jack Brabham (April 2, 1926 - May 19, 2014), aged 88
You will always be remembered as a legend.

Jack Brabham was my first hero. I could hardly have picked a better one.
Brabham was my teenage hero as well. I still have a poster of him on my wall.
What a tragedy for Australia, losing the incredible Repco engineering division of the 1960/1970's.

Aussie legends.
Thank you
Excellent video on this great man who not only was a exceptional driver.....but also did all this in his own car.....not many greats can claim that.
A real Gentleman
Great video. Alot of footage I've never seen before.
One of the greatest Australians! Bloody legend. Love his last line in this. And doesn't Bruce McLaren look and sound like Oscar Piastri eh!!!
Wow, surprisingly good documentary. Great footage and well put together.

great video and an amazing life. Really admire all the drivers from that era.
Black Jack was my Grandma's favourite driver because in her words: He was dead hard. Yes he was.
Often overlooked and undated by F1 fans outside Australia
your videos are outstanding, before finding your videos on the interwebs i had no clue who some of these people were

There is newsreel film of Jack winning the circa 1960 Moomba race at Philip Island in a Cooper Climax.

Not Patrese as well? And soon Vettel and Hamilton

Under which nationality did Brabham team compete during Jack Brabham´s active career until 1970 ? Under british or australian flag ?
Actually, officially British flag because of the seat there
The only man to walk across the line to claim his F1 world championship...
Sterling Moss would've been something else with a reliable car
The major problem was his fragile Colotti gearbox, while Brabham used a Citroen Ersa one.
Jack actually said many years later that Stirling thrashed his cars too much and that was a big mistake
“...and Stirling Moss is forced to retire with a broken __________”. Every damn race! How’d he ever become a Champion??? lol
