Anyone else kind of glad that they utilized more of Bubsy being a cat? His obsession with yarn, climbing on that kind of material they put on scratching posts, and even pouncing on enemies? It makes me see that Bubsy really is a bobcat and not just some creepy creature.

As others have suggested, I think it was a missed opportunity. if this game were a more tongue in cheek adventure about Bubsy trying to reclaim his "glory" and realizing he just can't compete with the bigger named franchises, I think it could have been great. Maybe even do a Wreck it Ralph sort of thing and have him explore the "backstage" areas of other game types, almost like it's a hollywood of games. I know that Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard did something similar. I think Bubsy should have tried something like that.
Come to think of it, I think that Bubsy should be reincarnated with a hipster persona. Just completely self-aware and ironic.
Kind of like the Teen Titans Go Movie?
Considering the ending to the first game...that would be 100% fitting.

This game's developers, Black Forest Games, also brought back another old mascot no one seemed to care about anymore, The Great Giana Sisters, an old Mario bros rip-off. It's actually pretty good and gives the IP it's own identity instead of just being mario with girls and terrible.
The Great Giana Sisters had an incredibly solid fan community so it wasn't that surprising.
Oh! So THAT'S why Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back reused Giana Sisters' engine! I thought I was the only one who noticed that!
We should revive old IPs more and give them good games.

This is the only fair review of this game I could find. IGN gave it a low score just because of the character but you, I like you. You're fair, you're reasonable. Great video on this btw. I'll be watching more of your videos from now on
That's weird, but then again, IGN is also the review-conglomerate that gives Battlefield and CoD blanket 9/10s for most of the time.
We may be talking about friggin' Bubsy the Bobcat of all characters, but even he should get a fair shake. After all, if he doesn't get one despite being legendary for a bad run of games, what hope do the forgotten folk have? Some of which even Nitro has covered on the channel.

Hi and greetings from the composer of this game! I don't know why some people hate on the Bubsy series. I liked both games on the SNES, and the original music is great. I did the music for "Bubsy The Woolies Strike Back" and I worked hard on the soundtrack to make it sound good. The game itself isn't as bad as some people say. True, the 3D Bubsy was bad, but not the SNES ones or the new versions. Cheers, Fabian aka Rapture
The 2d ones are decent at best. But some things like fall damage in a 2d platformer are just plain bad.

Bubsy 3D made the series infamous. The 2D platformers aren't that bad and I sometimes still go back to them because they do have a weird charm. Woolies Strike Back was a nice platformer, the biggest criticism to me is that it's too short for the original price tag, but I got it on sale and enjoyed it.

2017 was truly the year for platformers. If Bubsy made a come back with a game that wasn't even bad anything is possible.

This is easily the best voice Bubsy ever had. Wouldn't mind another game with some cute scenes (done just as competently if not more).
im disappointed you didn't mention any of the easter eggs, even thought they were really easy to see. (such as Mario and Sonic's names making an appearance/reference to in game. JUST like the planned release date.) The meta in the game was welcome, i think they could expand on it if they get the money and idea to make ANOTHER one. -
Who would've thought that in a 2 week span of a Mario game, a Bubsy game, and a Sonic game releasing, Bubsy wouldn't be the worst one.

All jokes aside, I am pretty interested in the possibility of a sequel to this game. It'd be really neat to see Accolade improve upon the foundation TWSB provided and really develop Bubsy as a unique and proper franchise. Also, I'm a sucker for self-aware humor (like the Chattiness slider in TWSB).

i think one of the factors that made bubsy return was also that around 2015/2016 sonic forces was announced and they showed the siluete of the custom character and that siluete that looked similar to bubsy, so everyone of course lost their shit because of it.
That look of his at the start, tho... those dead eyes haunt me.
On the fandom wiki page, it states that Bubsy's new voice actor is Dan Castellaneta, the same guy who voices Homer Simpson.

The first two Bubsy games are on Steam? And people gave them _positive_ reviews? Ugh, I will never understand why people buy games for the sake of a joke.

The worst part is that because of people ironically (and unironically) buying it, it gave the Bubsy series enough attention to warrant a revival.

"Mostly positive" is actually the most frequent score on Steam, one that an average game will most likely get. Given that an average game is now often someone's first game, it usually seems all you have to do get above negative-to-mixed is work without being bugged to hell.

I really enjoyed playing the original Bubsy game as a kid. Heck, I still have my copy of it for the SNES.
It's so refreshing to watch you review games. I saw someone else review this recently. And they just on and on made every single thing about the game negative, without making any comparisons to the previous games or even really going into logical detail of why something didn't work. Like the voice slider - it ends on Bubsy? That's hilarious! I laughed out loud! But it just made them mad.
Not to mention the fact that you and I shared almost the exact same childhood from your stories, video game wise, you cover platformers, horror games, and RPGS, which are all three my favorite games to play anyway, and all in all you are just a hilarious delight to listen to.

A Bubsy game that's actually decent, there's something I never imagined would happen.
I find it hilarious when I watch the Bubsy 3D review right before watching this one. It makes his little "What could possibly go wrong?" right at the end *hysterical.* Because I know. I know exactly what could possibly go wrong. But little does this past James know. The poor soul.
I remember when a few people thought Bubsy was gonna be in Sonic Forces due to the teaser of the silhouette of the custom character kinda looks like Bubsy, I guess it was foreshadowing for what's to come

The original game does actually have a bit of a mini cult following of it's own, but the sequels... Put it this way, if you ask those fans whether or not Bubsy ever had any sequels, you'll hear "What sequel?". Plenty either don't know or just don't want them to exist.

The commentary about the game's release date being between Sonic and Mario is really funnier when you consider it came out before Sonic Forces.

Really disagree with the presentation here, most of the art looks super generic and bland, almost like one of those average Saturday Morning Cartoons you occasionally look at that appear before/after another animated show that looks and sounds way better.
In fact, based on the footage alone, that's probably what this new Bubsy game is: an average game that was placed between two big franchises people look forward to the most.

I absolutely loved Bubsy 3D, especially that part where you visit the James Turrel Retrospective and you learn how to double jump and how if you use the medium of light to tell a story, you're using the power of a story, not the power of light ;^)
With a bit of effort, there is some potential for the character, I think. He can glide and now he can climb - a perfect character for an exploration-based, sandboxy title. Make every wall climbable, and with open-ended levels and branching paths to explore, Bubsy could potentially star in... a good game. Maybe turn his pounce into a Sonic-esque homing attack. I could see it happen.

I enjoyed Bubsy as a kid. I just figured it was hard because most games were hard back then. I rented it multiple times and owned the 3d game. I didn't realize people didn't like it until the JonTron video.

Excellent review! I felt the same way about this game. It's surprisingly good, but as you said, a bit dry and way too short. They could've really turned it up a notch and knocked it out of the park. Let's hope they do just that with the supposed sequel!

Mmm... I'm going to have to disagree. It looks pretty bad. It doesn't look like there's anything to engage the player from point A to point B, and while artistically the game doesn't look like complete crap, its outbalanced by how bad those animations look. But I mean, if its just being compared to its predecessors then its definitely a 10/10 on improvement, I guess?
Well, at least you choose to do this game instead of the Space Funeral remake that starred Bubsy. Lord have mercy.
