Reminds me of my Mum's. Perfect with ketchup or brown sauce. She also did a just pork version which was lovely warm or cold, and could make other meat, vegetable and fruit pies to die for.
Used to get that from a top flight Scottish butcher here, usually veal/ham/egg but pork varieties as well. You are making me very nostalgic with a number of these recipes. Thanks for the good memories. As for the diet these days...R.I.P.
As an average American I’ve never made or eaten anything like that, but I’m going to. Many traditional British foods made it across the pond though they have mutated a bit due to the availability of the usual ingredients but not this one. I love the idea of that egg surprise in the middle.
Omg! That’s perfection. Gala pie was a luxury in the 70s. Your mum usually got a big one to cut up for Christmas. You were eating gala pie until Easter hahaha. You hardly ever see it in the shops now, and if you do it pretty tasteless. That one won’t be tasteless Rik. One bite and you’re in Heaven ❤xxx
As a child I loved this but couldn't understand how the egg got in. Obviously 2 older brothers and a lovely gran told me all sorts of stories about this pie. Special chickens that produced long eggs, Emus etc Ridiculous. I believed it as a 6 year old. Now 58 Now I know - cheers matie 😂
Oh this is a long forgotten pie here in York UK, since one of our famous butchers closed about 20 years, Scotts butchers in Petergate made them, absolutely great classic, can't find anywhere else that makes it now...only one thing for it....make it myself 😊
Thank mate, appreciated. Under the weather a tad - keeps rearing its head - gotta be getting over it now I reckon. Its not stopping me that is for sure! Thank you. Best, Rik
Looks amazing. When i left school i worked in a well known pork pie factory. My main job was making pigs in blankets but used to cover over time in the pie section and loved the smell of all pork pies cooking.
Much better than the M&S one I get! Literally, my all time favorite summer meal is this, with the old fashioned English salad. Iceberg lettuce, Tomato, Cucumber, Spring onion, beetroot, Coleslaw and potato salad, smothered in Heinz Salad cream, with a couple of slices of thick buttered Doorstep bread. Heaven!
Use to watch Two Fat Ladies on PBS making all these traditional British dishes. It always looked complicated. When I watch Rik, I say yup, I can do that. And I have.
Really enjoying some nostalgia in your recipes lately Rik. Gala pie reminds me of my childhood. I used to spend hours actually wondering how the eggs all joined up!!! I'm going to give this one a go at the weekend. Thanks Rik.

I have never seen anything like it. Thank you for showing us! This is amazing. The pie crust leaves on top? Very nice touch.
WOW! Now that is a superb gala pie, with the necessary gelatin!!! I have never seen this type of pastry made before, it actually looks quite easy. Thank you🤗
Fantastic looking pie Rik 👌, have only ever bought it sliced from the Butcher or Deli & always wondered how they get the eggs running uniformly throughout the pie 🪄✨, mystery solved … no sorcery involved!😁 Thanks as always for sharing & I tip my hat 🎩 to you for soldiering on when you’re feeling under par, hope you feel better soon my friend!🤒🤧🍇💐💕💞🩷
Another easy to follow recipe. I used to use another Yorkshire mans recipe to make pork pies but your method is visually easy to follow. I made some formed ham using your recipe last week and it is spot on. Today I am making pea and ham soup.
Awww Man.. My recently departed and greatly missed Father Inlaw used to bake these.. He got his recipe many years ago when he moved to Melton Mowbray. I am glad he brought that recipe with him when the family emigrated to Australia.
