That wonderful Neumann TLM-102 mike was a birthday gift from the military band with whom she produced the album, "It's Magic," when she was 11. Although her 12th birthday was on January 10, 2018, she did not receive the mike until April. Then she and her family moved to L.A. in mid year and she started to use this guitarist. So, with that information you can better pinpoint the time of the video. She has used a newer microphone, a TLM-103, more recently, but the studio recordings of late all use very large 1950's types of mikes. This performance is one of her best.
What makes this even more impressive is the fact that this an unrehearsed 1st & only take. Sometimes it takes 2 takes if the guitarist, Ivan Mendez, messes up. She is reading the lyrics & singing it on the fly. These home videos are all done like this according to Ivan in an interview. I think she is just flexing her improvisational skills, singing it as she is feeling it. I prefer this simple jam over the $Million production by Rhianna. Just sayin'!!!
Rhianna had a huge hit with this song. When we heard it, the production was a totally professionally studio set-up with who knows how many 'takes' before its release. AJ performs it at her home in a make-shift studio with her friend Ivan accompanying her on guitar. Neither of them was fully versed in the song and Ivan is basically just playing off her lead. Angelina has to constantly look at a tablet or phone on her side and actually rearranges the song 'on the fly'. Still, she is able to bring forth more emotion laden penetration than Rhianna.
Great spot on the mic..given to her on her 12th birthday and is a Neuman..dint know which model but it’s perfect for her..at least matches Rihanna here imo whilst reading the lyrics! Probably unrehearsed first or second take! Watch Ivan Mendez! He feels this so deeply..lucky guy!
When I watch this video for the thousandth time, I always follow Jordan’s hands and Ivan’s facial expressions, as she takes him into her own little world!

She is literally creating this vocal performance in real time as she sings the song for the first time. All this is per an interview the guitarist, Ivan Mendez, gave within the last couple of years on Wrapped In A Warm Blanket podcast, which is devoted entirely to Angelina. Every time you see him with her, she is 12. Two other songs from this age that are excellent examples of her ability to emote are Wicked Game and I Know I'm Not The Only One. Also there are three original songs written by Angelina. One written not later than age 11 is Oslo about her home town. The others are Shield about her family protecting her- there are two versions, one is taken from a TV show and if you watch that version there is a short interview just prior to the song that you may have to find separately. The other version is a music video filled with symbolism which was directed by Angelina's grandmother Mery Zamani. Both are excellent in different ways. The third song is What Is Life which like the current video is recorded in her home with this guitarist and one other musician. The lyrics seem childish but the more you think about them you realize that they are a great window into her life and values at age 12 that she has encapsulated beautifully and of course her voice is magnificent. One additional song at 12 is Wake Me Up which is a cover of a song by Avicii that Angelina completely reimagines as a final goodbye to Avicii after his suicide. She changes it from a club dance song into a heartfelt last remembrance of him as they were friends and had worked together on a Volvo commercial when she was even younger. This is Angelina's classic aged 12 voice. Note that she's cribbing the lyrics from an off-screen iPad. She messes up one line but you wouldn't know it because, like a true professional, she just carries right on as if she meant to do it that way.
