Yamakpah the Pileated Woodpecker Reminds Us

Yamakpah, the pileated woodpecker, is the hero in a Ktunaxa myth about the creation of the earth where Yamakpah is sent to earth to check out the land to make sure the humans can survive. It is as thought the myth has become a reality when the US Forest Service begins to use the pileated woodpecker as an indicator species to make sure the forests are healthy.
