Interesting discussion. A good monopoly in my view is a utility like power generation, which is expected to provide maintenance above and beyond profit-making limitations - such as for fire safety, energy security, energy efficiency, and pollution control - while ensuring an excess capacity is available at all times. Most companies are much better off with real competition. This competition must be ensured by government regulation or it won’t survive; monopolies can always take over an industry if allowed, especially today when capital is allocated merely based on company size.
The period from Reconstruction until the end of the Roaring Twenties was a time of private monopolization, and the transfer of wealth towards the top 1 percent. But throughout this time period, especially at turn of the century, third parties, independents or "fusionist" movements emerged, often not just as challengers but as victors. Its perhaps interesting to think of general thesis where as private industry consolidates into the hands of very few - and overtime the politicians allow this to ossify - are they inviting their own demise.
Android is open source, there are a number of custom ROMs for Android that you can use instead of Google's version. Google App store doesn't have monopoly on apps as Android allows third party loading of anything. This is a bad argument and if you approach Google from Android's POV, you've already lost. In fact Android is the only phone you actually own vs the iPhone that you merely rent from Apple. I didn't hear a single argument about breaking down the actual monopoly that is Apple.
Good discussion. Funny to me that Matt Stoller is critical of big government and bureaucracy but then states he’s voting for Biden on his Twitter though 🤔
Big government on the Republican side is growing! Just look at how Florida and Texas Republican controlled establishments want everything their way even if it tramples on people's rights and freedoms! And on the federal side the house Republicans want to do nothing and then push the blame on the current administration!
When you have a choice between a spineless coward who doesn't respect our constitution or democracy and another individual who does respect them. It is not a hard decision who to vote for. And if you look around the world only Russia, North Korea, and China are rooting for a Republican administration. How scary is that?
Great discussion! I'm always surprised by how little the TH-cam algorithm promotes this type of content.
Stoller is spicy! Love it
Excellent viewpoints Matt

Apparently you don’t understand the history of deregulatory policy that accelerated under Reagan and has done immense damage ever since. Funny, huh?
maybe you are dumb? And Stoller is NOT critical of big government or bureaucracy.
