Actual conversation with my mother. Mom: "Don't you like any Christmas movies? What's your favorite Christmas movie?" Me: "Die Hard" Mom (rolls eyes): "Okay. What is your second favorite Christmas movie?" Me: "Die Hard 2" Mom: "And Die Hard 3 is your third favorite?" Me: "Of course not. Die Hard 3 takes place during the summer" Mom: "So what is your THIRD favorite Christmas movie?" Me: "Lethal Weapon" Love Die Hard 2. But you can't help compare it to the original. And the original was just superior. Predator 2 was a good movie. But I like Predator 1 more.
We've had similar conversations at work. I said with my main channel comment that while With a Vengeance is a good movie, I like the first 2 movies better. No just as Christmas movies, just simply as movies. As far as Christmas movies go Die Hard 1 and 2 are probably 4 and 5. My favourites would be... 1.Basic. John McTernan again Though it doesn't have the Christmas vibe they are packing up the base to movie stateside in the new Year. 2 Dark Angel / I come in Peace. I just love that movie. 3 Hunt For the Red October. Christmas is in the background but it's still Christmas As for Predator, totally with you. Predator 2 is great and there is probably a few things it does better than the original but 1 is still the best... but only just.
Die Hard 2 is one of my favorite sequels of all time. It may not be as fresh as the first, but it kept the same feel as the first one. A very well crafted action movie and my favorite sequel of the bunch. I can't say if it's underrated . It was a big box office hit in summer of '90 and set a home video record for most rentals for a short period of time when it was released. I think it's even more well received now than during it's original release.
Nice review, it's definitely a good action film. For the grenade scene, I thought they were throwing a bunch of grenades with the pins still attached to make a big bomb, and then throw the live one at the end that makes them all explode, giving McClane time to eject. But that's just how I thought it would work
William Sadler doing naked martial arts really set him up as a BA, in my opinion. He's got the news playing in the background while he runs through his kata.... I could see him doing that when he was in the service, some poor Lieutenant awkwardly reading the days briefings while Col Stewart does naked Tai Chi. 😂😂😂
It's also my favourite. I said it on many Die Hard videos that part two is the best. I can't really say why. It's just that I like it the most. And it was the best part in Die Hard Trilogy on PlayStation 1.
This movie were made during the prime time of Renny Harlin and is why it delivered. He were on the top list of action directors for a few movies. William Sadler were a great villain i think. DH 2 is actually higher rated than his popular Cliffhanger movie.
Glad to see some love for Die Hard 2, as a teenager I loved all 3 Die Hard’s and never once thought that to rank them or thought that one of them was better than another. All three are awesome, also I’ve just subscribed so looking forward to checking out your other videos.
Always thought of myself as someone who was aware of the general public opinion on a movie; ie I’d know if a movie I liked was generally considered to be poor, and vice-versa; things like that. One of the genuine only times where I had a ‘what, really that’s how it’s thought of!!!’ moments in relation to movies was when in my early twenties I found out that Die Hard 2 is regarded as a poor follow-up movie. Was genuinely shocked as I grew up thinking it was an awesome movie, and still stick to that to this day
Really enjoyed this! Nail on the head about the grenade/ejector scene, I always thought it was me that was critical. Your fix is perfect and would make the scene more tight and tense than it is. For me DH3 is my favourite but 2 is really solid too.
I like the movie too. Unfortunately, as someone who lives near Dulles, and as a pilot, the plot is horrendously contrived. Many of the ideas set upon not just Dulles, but any large airport, are impossible at best. As you mentioned, the grenade thing, the 747 fuel leak, and most importantly: The fact that all of these planes would just divert to their alternate airports, and they wouldn't choose the alternate to be BWI or DCA... think, Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville- hundreds of miles away is normal when the weather is forecast to be bad, nor would they allow flights to take off from the originating airport, even if it's sunny San Diego if their destination has closed airports. Anyway, it's still a fun afternoon movie to watch....
This just came up for me. These last 3 Christmases, I've been introduced to some great content creators whose channels are just getting going. I genuinely like this movie. While With a Vengence is good too, the first 2 are the only ones I would happily watch over and over. You've done a great job outlining why I really like it. My favourite scene is McClaine firing blanks at Captain Lorenzo to prove he's right. My main criticism of your video is not acknowledging Colm Meaney being in the movie. For me, Under Siege the best of the Die Hard formula movies. Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey made that movie great. Another shout out for Colm Meaney.
One thing that separates “Die Hard 2” from the original is the more graphic violence. The throat slitting and eye stabbing wouldn’t be out of place in a slasher movie. The original edit of the film got an X in the US.
Renny Harlin the director had made a Nightmare on Elm Street 4 prior to this. its the same reason the Segal movie Marked for death has way more graphic brutal violence. the guy who directed that one also did Halloween 4 Dwight H Little.
yes it is, it's a solid sequel. Mr Falcon is the codename used for the General. Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger are CLASSICS. A CLASSIC SEQUEL A CLASSIC sLY FILM, HE ALSO DIRECTED THE LAST good NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET SEQUEL, PART 4. also Cuuthroat island, A CULT CLASSIC
The movie has good scenes. Tension, action, intensity, yes. But it's hung together on a plot that is completely convoluted. It requires suspension of, not just disbelief, but reality altogether. I can't rewatch it and forget there is more than one airport in the DC area.
It's not bad as such , it just loses you at times , it doesn't have the tight "no wasted seconds" editing that Die Hard or Robocop has, both of those keep your attention for every second until end credits role
It took me literal years to warm up to Die Hard 2. I always found it boring and a typical example of "lazy sequel literally just doing the first one again." But in my old age (Well, I FEEL old, lol) I've finally made my peace with DH2 as a REALLY WELL DONE example of a sequel literally just remaking the first film, lol. I love cinematography of Oliver Wood - the film has a potent atmosphere where you can feel the winter chill the entire time and the heat of the belly of the airport, etc. The moody as hell lighting of the control tower, etc. You jus can't beat the look and feel of 80s and 90s studio action thrillers.
At least we can agree that William Sadler is an excellent villain, cold, callous, lethal, more than a physical match for our hero McClane, Franco Nero as the corrupt drug lord is also amazing ! RIP John Amos, he was a badass villain here, too !
It’s great because McClane’s life doesn’t suck in this sequel. He and Holly are back together, he’s finally accepted Holly’s career is taking off by moving to live with his family, he’s PROMOTED to an LAPD lieutenant, and he’s still hanging out with Al on the job. There’s no reason after this film that reinforces all the positives from the first movie to wind up divorced, to become estranged from his kids, and to go back as a lone New York detective.
You do sense the difference in...style/feel about the films, as they have differant casts and Director's another reason I prefere the 2nd to the 1st, was because Mclane was written far less cocky in DIE HARD 2 making it easier to care for the character, he seemed much harder pressed with more to do as well in limited time
The answer isn’t yes or no, the answer is severely. Not saying this is better than the first, just that it is the second best…to me it’s the second best.
I've always loved it as much as the other two. Never understood the haters. It's a double christmas bill for me for sure. Also, it's a crime to talk about this trilogy without mentioning the genious of Michael Kamen. What a one of a kind master he was.
EXECUTIVE DECISION how did I ever forget that one, a VERY underrated film, with the great Ken Russell you could argue that among the very first was 1971s DIRTY HARRY there he had to deliver a ransome, in very limited time, as they tried to keep the mission quiet & get passed many hurdles in the process.
My only problem with Die Hard 2 was they only take that one airport hostage. Why didn't the pilots just land in another airport? Or was there a throwaway line explaining why they couldn't? It only bothered me as I got older, I didn't care when I was a kid.
The action in DH2 is fantastic and Willis is on point. Loved the movie so much I used to have the poster on my wall. It is the best sequel. I remember seeing the ejector seat scene in cinema and it was awesome.
Actually, funny thing...Lethal Weapon and Die Hard are in the same universe. In Lethal Weapon 2,there's a scene in the police station and there's an empty desk and there's a nameplate on it and it reads Det Mclane.
@NH1973 Umm,yep.Actually,DIE HARD was highly considered to be the sequel to COMMANDO.And oh yea,the nameplate connection was an inside joke because maga producer Joel Silver, was a producer on both films.
@@thedragonlee76 I didn't know it was actually considered a sequel. I just knew about Valverde being in Commando as well as Die Hard 2. And maybe also in Predator
@NH1973 The Predator connection? Yep! Now,there are a lot of Predator/Alien connected films...Outland(starring Sean Connery),Blade Runner, and Solider(starring Kurt Russel)
I love the movie, good flick, great action scenes, but the plot is cringy sometimes. One: It does not make sense the plane carrying General Esperanza would land at a civilian airport, especially on December 24th and with Andrews base nearby. Two: Disabling the airport tower does not prevent pilots to be diverted somewhere else. Area control center, responsible to control flights between airports, would still be available. Three: It is unlikely nobody would have contacted the Air Force or the military to tell them the General had taken off in a 747. Fighter jets would have then be ordered to intercept the plane. and many more... Still a movie I love to watch sometimes because of action scenes mainly. I especially like the fight on the wing and Major Grant's demise (evil laugh).
Funny... I wouldn't have counted Speed as a Die Hard ripoff, because he doesn't kill an army of bad guys one by one. I guess by that standard, I wouldn't count Die Hard 3 through 27 as Die Hard films either...
People like Die Hard with a Vengeance because of the compelling first hour and because of the nostalgia for pre-Sept-11 New York. In reality, the film totally runs out of steam after the heist at the Fed Reserve
I enjoy "Die Hard 2" quite a bit and think its a solid sequel. Also, I think it feels more like a Christmas film, compared to the original, due to the snow setting.
”Is this movie underrated?” YES! It didn’t use to be, on release it was an absolutely monumental success and rightfully praised as the first rate action movie it is. It’s only later that people have, inexplicably, started to look down on it, and even more inexplicably, claiming “Die hard with a vengeance” to be the superior movie. I for one HATE “Die hard with a vengeance”. It’s a travesty. It’s a movie that took all the “Die hard” out of “Die hard”: the brains, the claustrophobia, John McClane’s personality, and turned it into just another big, dumb, generic action movie. I can still remember how thrilled I was when I heard “Die hard 3” was going to take place on a cruise ship - yes! A PROPER “Die hard” setting. Then “Under siege” came along and this crapfest took its place. The title alone was a huge red flag for me in 1995. When they stop giving sequels numbers, and give them elaborate titles instead, you know they’re gonna ruin what was good about the franchise by turning it into something it was never meant to be. And I repeat, “John McClane’s” character development … had the movie been called “The last boyscout 2” it wouldn’t have been better for it, but at least the character development would’ve made sense! I rewatched “Die hard with a vengeance” once, to make sure I didn’t judge it too harshly the first time. It was still odious, and it will NEVER make it into my dvd collection of which the first two “Die hard” movies are a given part. I simply am too big a “Die hard” fan to insult the franchise that way. “Die hard 2”, on the other hand, is one of the greatest sequels ever made, and is way overdue to get the praise it deserves, and that it originally received before said praise was unjustly taken away from it. On another note: that talk about “Cliffhanger” being “Die hard” on a mountain is nonsense. One of the most important parts of the “Die hard” concept, is that sense of claustrophobia and confinement. “Cliffhanger” takes place under the big blue sky in a whole freaking mountain range. It doesn’t get less confined than that. But yes, “Sudden death” is indeed a very nice, campy dumb “Die hard” progeny, with a very memorable villain portrayal by the late great Powers Boothe.
You hate Die Hard With A Vengeance... with a vengeance. I recall Die Hard 3 was originally a spec script called Simon Says which they reconfigured. I'm gonna file your post under M for miscellaneous.
This one always bothered me and I think it is the simple reason that they didnt just send the other planes to Philly, Baltimore, Charleston, or the other DC airport. Instead they circle and run out of fuel. Talk to the other airports that arent that far away. Or at least set in a more isolated metropolis like Phoenix or Denver or Minneapolis.
I'm with you, Die Hard 2 is a good sequel that suffers mostly from being a sequel and offers very little new. What are you doing on Boxing Day? Why watch 2 Die Hard movies when you can watch 3? I agree that the 3rd is excellent and rivals the first. Die hard with a Vengeance was adapted from another script so wasn't intended to be a Die Hard movie originally. This is why it diverges as far as it does and why it is such a great sequel. I feel you underrate Undersiege and overrate Speed but that aside I totally agree.
I think it was unfairly criticised. Some of the best action movies came out of the 50's and 60's. (In my opinion) Many movie goers are fans of airplane disaster movies , and will watch movies with planes and airport scenes, regardless of their popularity or lack of.
I wonder how die hard with a vengeance would have been is sir Sean Connery didn’t turn down the part that Jeremy irons played , also die hard 3 was initially lethal weapon 4
I really love die hard 2. Easily the most re watchable over the years. My attitude is biased though I guess cos it was the first film I saw in usa at the movies when I visited. (it was packed, and everybody loved it and cheered ect)
Im not really offeded by cuss words but the over use of f words were kins annoying for me in this movie for some reason , still rewatch this every couple years tho
I feel like 1995's "Die Hard with a Vengenance" is SPEED on a Die Hard. It's a movie trying to be SPEED. Psychopath on a phone leading a cop around town on a wild goose chase to cause a diversion for his heist escape.
I’m not sure Bruce gives this 100%. There’s a scene with Barnes where they looking for the church and it gives 25th take can’t be arsed with this vibes. That’s Bruce you’re watching, not McClane. Still a great film.
I love die hard 2 in a lot of ways it's better than the first movie now I will say as a film the first one is absolutely the best of the best but I in my opinion the second one's a little funner and to me it's got a little more heart to it because he seems to be trying a lot harder to save a lot more people and I found it more intense and enjoyable
I like Die Hard 2 a lot. And I know that Steven Seagal is a complete douchebag. But Under Siege is the better of the two films in my opinion. You got the already nuts Seagal and Busey, then you add a pretty maniacal TL Jones performance? I loved it back in 1990-whatever the first time I saw it and I still loved it the last time I watched it maybe a couple years ago.
Die hard 2 has the die hard feel and its entertaining. But the plot is ridiculous and really just is way over the top even for an action film. The fact they crashed a plane with over 200 people killing them all was ridiculous. However the climax on the wing of the 747 was dope af and one of the best action sequences in the series if not the best.
Weirdest movie I ever saw in-flight (my first trans-Atlantic). It had all of the crashing planes cut (obviously), plus the air bridge scene, and I swear there was a scene added that I haven't seen since. Still came in at well under an hour.
Die hard 2 is the title. That's the title in the movie, that's the title on IMDB, Die Harder is the publicity subtitle, but it's not the title. Also, in the "Die Hard in a/on a" list you could have. Die hard on a train, Under Siege 2 Die Hard on a Boat. Speed 2 Die Hard in a highrise, er, Dredd.
It is as good as the third installment but nothing tops the original I think. We can all agree that it is miles ahead of the last two Die Hard films, right?
Iv'e seen DIE HARD...3 times & I can't get used to thinking of it as an action classic, much as I try There ARE other "Action hero" films that to me are better such as- SPEED, DEADY PERSUIT/SHOOT TO KILL, COMMANDO (despite it all being a spoof with a thin plot line) BUT I DO prefere DIE HARD'S 2 and 3 to the original, it's not easy to explain why, perhaps they were less...lonely & claustrphobic with more going on, more populated films. Also DIE HARD had a very...70s disaster film vibe about it more more like say TOWERING INFERNO but without the flames
Decent fun but not on the same level as the first film, or the third for that matter. Die Hard 2 feels a bit too OTT in a way that the McTiernan films aren't and McClane seems less likeable somehow. IDK it's okay, but I've always felt it lacks a little something - also the end fight on the plane wing is unsatisfying.
That is what i think the second movie. It's like the first one but with snow and in a different city. They even have the black nerd guy lol It's not a bad movie but a pale comparison
I thought Jeremy Irons eclipsed Allen Rickman, for me the best Villian with his... NAZI Like coolness in DIE HARD 3 the fourth film wasnt that bad I didnt think, they tried something different there as Mclane is most out of his depth with new technology & they admit (sometimes any way) that his age is against him, there they seemed to use the sci fi TERMINATOR approach thinking that could work in a Die hard film.

That's way too deep and specific! Lol I LOVE it! Thank you!
Django? Do you mean Kunta Kinte?

If you asking if it's underrated, then the answer is yes. That movie is freaking outstanding.
My problem with the second one is it takes a bit too long setting up the events but once the action kicks off it is a great film
I enjoy "Die Hard 2" quite a bit and think its a solid sequel. Also, I think it feels more like a Christmas film, compared to the original, due to the snow setting.
Mr. Falcon proved a long held theory of mine... that Die Hard takes place in the F-Zero universe.
Ok
You hate Die Hard With A Vengeance... with a vengeance. I recall Die Hard 3 was originally a spec script called Simon Says which they reconfigured.
I'm gonna file your post under M for miscellaneous.
This one always bothered me and I think it is the simple reason that they didnt just send the other planes to Philly, Baltimore, Charleston, or the other DC airport. Instead they circle and run out of fuel. Talk to the other airports that arent that far away. Or at least set in a more isolated metropolis like Phoenix or Denver or Minneapolis.
Yes
Die Hard 2 is a really good sequel and it has the best Yippie Ki Yay scene 🔥
I'm with you, Die Hard 2 is a good sequel that suffers mostly from being a sequel and offers very little new.
What are you doing on Boxing Day?
Why watch 2 Die Hard movies when you can watch 3?
I agree that the 3rd is excellent and rivals the first.
Die hard with a Vengeance was adapted from another script so wasn't intended to be a Die Hard movie originally. This is why it diverges as far as it does and why it is such a great sequel.
I feel you underrate Undersiege and overrate Speed but that aside I totally agree.
I actually enjoy 2 more than 3, DH2 is more ...festive🎄🎇✨🎆🎄
I think it was unfairly criticised.
Some of the best action movies came out of the 50's and 60's. (In my opinion)
Many movie goers are fans of airplane disaster movies , and will watch movies with planes and airport scenes, regardless of their popularity or lack of.
I just watched this last week. It is full of cheese but still fun.
Under Siege is a lot of fun
I love Sudden Death. I think it’s one of JCVD’s better flicks.
Yes - very underrated. I see it as an equal as well as a sequel. Just like Alien/Aliens & Predator/Predator 2
Die hard 2 is the title. That's the title in the movie, that's the title on IMDB, Die Harder is the publicity subtitle, but it's not the title.
Also, in the "Die Hard in a/on a" list you could have.
Die hard on a train, Under Siege 2
Die Hard on a Boat. Speed 2
Die Hard in a highrise, er, Dredd.
All 3 are equally great
I’ve never really understood why people call speed a diehard clone. IAside from a one location setting and being an action movie…
2 is my favorite of the series. (I Guess it helps that I'm a huge aviation nerd)
i've seen die hard 1 too many times. these days when im in the mood for some die hard i put 2 on
It is as good as the third installment but nothing tops the original I think. We can all agree that it is miles ahead of the last two Die Hard films, right?
Passenger 57 was named after Heinz 57.
I saw them all in the theater. Die Hard 3 is the best one.
Iv'e seen DIE HARD...3 times & I can't get used to thinking of it as an action classic, much as I try
There ARE other "Action hero" films that to me are better such as- SPEED, DEADY PERSUIT/SHOOT TO KILL, COMMANDO (despite it all being a spoof with a thin plot line)
BUT I DO prefere DIE HARD'S 2 and 3 to the original, it's not easy to explain why, perhaps they were less...lonely & claustrphobic with more going on, more populated films.
Esperanza's call sign is Falcon when communicating with the bad guys at Eagle's Nest and McClane overheard that.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that!
the fact that kobe was 95 percent like jordan says that kobe wasnt good?? die hard 2 extremely underrated
I always liked 2 best. I just thought it was everything the first one was, but more.
Not quite the level of the first one for me, but still a very good classic action movie.
Die hard 2 is my favourite. 👍
Kesinlikle!
That is what i think the second movie. It's like the first one but with snow and in a different city. They even have the black nerd guy lol
It's not a bad movie but a pale comparison
Not underrated. It’s awesome. Those that know, know.
I like Die Hard 2. It's probably the best action movie sequel of all time.
No lol. Terminator 2, Road Warrior, The Dark Knight, Top Gun: Maverick, The Raid 2, and Aliens are all better than Die Hard 2.
Is "Yippiee ki yay, Mr. Falcon" better than "This is what happens when you meet a stranger in the Alps"?
That is another classic lol
Die Hard 2 is appropriately rated.
I thought Jeremy Irons eclipsed Allen Rickman, for me the best Villian with his... NAZI Like coolness in DIE HARD 3
the fourth film wasnt that bad I didnt think, they tried something different there as Mclane is most out of his depth with new technology & they admit (sometimes any way) that his age is against him, there they seemed to use the sci fi TERMINATOR approach thinking that could work in a Die hard film.
