Again, I love how we go back to drawing the energy/gesture. It is deceptively difficult to draw anything this way because you must have the required knowledge and visual library to achieve greater results. I am in process of learning how to "see" these flowy lines :D
Drawing creatures is actually the most relaxing and fun thing in drawing imo

I like your art it truly inspires me I am at that point where I want to draw but got nothing in mind but when I do I completely give up because it doesn’t look like what I imagined, it’s tough man😢 and watching your vids give me that little spark of motivation.
This is the answer nobody wants to hear but it's the truth; draw a ton of stuff by just copying reference, fill pages with textures, do life studies of people, collect as much anatomy reference material as you can. You just gotta do the reps to fill your head with a library of shape language and stuff. Worry about creativity a little later, whenever you're blocked just do reference work.

Honestly, trying to practice drawing faster and faster has made me not only much better artist, but get less frustrated.
And I think it stems from 1 main thing: Making less mistakes
1) I go to fix things less that don't matter.
2) I get to make big mistakes faster and iterate faster, thus I get to the good structure faster and makes less future mistakes.
It's all about excusing yourself from the lines you put down. The faster you can let go, the better your drawings will be. We get in our own way of progress due to perfection.

Damn, I just realized the size of the paper you're drawing on. I used to beat myself over making tiny sketches on an A5 format, like that's not something a real artist would have done, they use these huge canvases and whatnot. Boy was I an idiot back in the day.

I really love your style of sketching/drawing. Its similar to how i draw. I was wondering though if maybe you could go a little more in depth on hair/fur on animals. Such as different lengths, blending the fur into a harder material like horns/antlers, representing different colors of fur while also keeping shadows readable, and the flow of hair around the body. Thank you!! I really enjoy the content and find it useful!

Hey Bobby, I’ve commented on this before, maybe your last video. So try as I might I know I’m heavy handed, in the end my sketches are close to the same values….there isn’t cohesive flow. I’ve been working with a b4, but since I know I’m a little heavy with values I went to a b2. Are there any exercises? Like if you have spotted hide how the highlights and shadows along with cast shadows, etc. One of you sketchbook flip through you had like a giraffe character that had beautiful work to it. Can you go over something like that. Or with horn/antlers…the change in color/tone vs. shade and shadow. Sry for the long winded post.

Do you think there is anything worthy of being talked about when it comes to the initial rough sketch and how to arrive there? I once read something about "contouring" and "massing" but was never able to find more information on it. There the artist talked about how some artists like to use loose lines to get the proportions where others like to start with big chunks of shapes to get to the first phase of drawing. I feel like I'm struggling with the line approach but drawing with shapes seems to be harder in invisible 3D space. And then I've seen great comic artists like Jim Lee and David Finch draw with big circles and cylinders to get their initial proportions down. I don't even know what I'm talking about right now. I'll see myself out.

Question: I have a problem when if shade, I just feel like I overshade a lot and I only make my drawings have a dark value, I can’t seem to find a way to shade lighter without not feeling uncomfortable.
Tip: hold your pencil more loose. If you hold your pencil too tight it could be contributing, but if it's simply too many layers, just try to keep yourself conscious and stepping back near the end. And if its finished, you could use a kneadable eraser and just pancake it if it's already too dark.
If you overshade,you just pronounce a highlights and from white shade easy to first overshades!!!
Hey Bobby, so earlier I was explaining tone, value, shadows, but I also wanted to add the contrast. So…I can do all, but trying to do a sketch, it falls dark, 2 tone, and kind of flat. I’m trying a softer medium. At the same point “Spots or Stripes” like a giraffe or zebra. Highlights, values contrast, tone (spots). Any help would be great. BIG🦶
This is when not pressing harder and keeping the pencil sharp really comes into play. You can do an entire sketch with just one pencil if you control the grip and release pressure when needed.
@@bobbyrebholz2183 that is why I’m the cricket, and you are the master. I think what’s messing me up is setting the tone of the area, but it does help. You make it look very easy. I can do it to a certain extent, but once I try to add values it turns all dark. Patience and practice, with what you do, my art pops a lot more…..plus I enjoy it more too. Thanks dude!

I have no artistic skill and I'm writing a comic book. Can you illustrate a character or 2 for me? It's much easier to write when I can see the character.
The "background" adds atmosphere......only standup comedians can survive without a "background"...... So Starwars in your granny's kitchen will always be inferior to a majestic infinitely dark, and infinitely ...infinite.... perfect " background"......the background baby...THATS where its at MF! - Great video posting!

Of course you can! It's a physical skill, like walking or tying your shoes. You just need to sit down and start doing it.
Pick up Mark Kistlers' You Can Draw in 30 Days, and just...go. It's very non-intimidating, and a nice point to just start getting into the daily practice of sitting down and DOING (he also streams live on youtube).
Be patient with yourself--learning a skill does take time. You're literally growing new connections in your brain and developing muscle memory for what it feels like to do these things.
