Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

My granny believed in the fair folk. She would leave out offerings (shortbread and whisky) for them, never stand in a fairy ring, and she wouldn't go near the standing stone that we had in the garden of our house in Culross.

Wonderful! As a wee bairn, I heard the tale of the Fairy Flag from my mother. When I got engaged, I and my dearie went to Skye and, yes, visited the Fairy Flag. I took my wee niece there years ago and her face to see a real Fairy Flag! Some things are worth the story. I like the possibility that it is an ancient Eastern pennant. Who knows but that the Fairy Woman was really a lady from overseas. It works for me too as a gift from the Fairies.

I recall being told a version of the story when I was a kid that the McLeod's were warned to only wave the flag in times of great danger or else a terrible doom would occur and eventually a chief who did not believe in fairies waved it and sure enough they lost their land. This may have been an Irish version of the story since any deals with the fae pretty much always backfires in Irish stories.

as ive said before on my mothers side my ancestors were shipped off the ilse of skye to go to prince edward island to be replaced with sheep, that was 1750s(the french from prince edward island wer shipped off to louisiana) and my fathers side most of the records were lost during the war 2 even though there is a town named after my last name cowndenbeath, so if you meet anyone named cowden in scotland they are related to me

Fascinating tales! As you spoke I couldn't help remembering my time in Alberta Canada where there are lots of towns with Scottish names, like Airdrie, Dunvegan and Calgary -- all because of some McLeods. I'm having a great time learning from this channel and seeing and hearing about the places that inspired these namesakes.

All those are different versions of the origin of the fairy flag to the ones I’ve heard.
The version I have heard or read most often.
The Chief of Clan McLeod. Went for a walk with his wife, the fairies stole her her and left behind her handkerchief, which is the fairy flag.
This was apparently an acceptable story when your wife disappeared back in the 15th century.
Of course if this happens today, you might get arrested.

I learnt about fairies when I was researching Biddy Early, a 18century clairvoyant for my literary studies in 2005/6. I also read about a Hawthorn tree that was supposed to have been protected when roadworks were taking place in Ireland at the time, but that a couple of rogues cut it down in the night! Just like the Tree near Hadrian's Wall! Very sad! There'll be no luck for these people now. 😞🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪🙏

The song sung by the McCleod on the Fairy Bridge,
🎶"Sídhe may be the face I can't forget
A trace of pleasure or regret
May be my treasure or the price I have to pay
Sídhe may be the song that summer sings
May be the chill that autumn brings
May be a hundred different things

It's amazing that so much mythology has grown up just to explain how a square of silk got from the Middle East to Scotland. Likely the real answer is that, even a thousand years ago, the world was more connected and less parochial than some would have you believe. A few people did regularly travel from Scotland to the Mediterranean, and powerful people would pay good money for curiosities from far-off lands in order to flaunt their wealth and status. Still, the world's a more interesting place for all the legends and tall tales.

I thouroughly appreciate your VERY informed and educational approach to highland history, especially on account of having studied history and archeology myself, trying to make people understand the interlocked currencies of cultural exchange between peoples and times... We could have far better inter-cultural communication if people (us!) were not divded by "special interest"... Where it gets even more interesting is if you survey modern air force pilots: a significant number would, once they trusted the surveyor enough, admit that they believed that they had been pilots killed in world war 2 and they were using their reincarnation to finish their business as pilots. (I heard this about 20 years ago, so the most recent pilots may represent a different cohort.)

Do the battle of the Braes on Skye, against being cleared, yet again. My family on Raasay had been cleared 3 times and avoided transportation, and went to family on Skye, and got "cleared" twice again, so were "cleared" 5 times and then they fought back, and sort of won. They were incredibly fortunate to not be forcibly taken to Canada, new Zealand or Australia against thier will.

its uncanny, as you pull these stories together the more you shine a light on things such as fairies. I think that all these fairy stories play well on the imagination of certain people and always have done, I have read about magic mushrooms giving people hallucinations ( visions) well smart people would have found this may be a way of earning money out of some people who want to believe there we could have 2 types of people those who want to take and those who want to give. ect ect..... let peoples imaginations do the rest. love your interesting stories Bruce.

I dont think that is Landøyðan. The land waster I recently studied the historical sources around it and they are not many. It is mentioned in his saga. Some think Landøyðan had the symbol of the crow or raven.
