ZUN himself says that this track is special to him personally, as a beginning point. I myself have been a fan for 5 years and not one of my days afterwards has Touhou not been involved in my everyday life somehow. Fans have made daily content, whether it be art, music, or games. I know one this is for sure for me. I'm going to be enjoying Touhou for as long as I live. At some point and time. This wonderful Touhou PC-98 series is going to be nostalgic.
this was posted back around 2013 and 5 years before that was 2008 (so when SA released). Hard to believe that was about 13 years ago even though the number of games are still in the 10-20 range
And then you're playing IaMP and you're like "Wait... Reimu has a slide kick attack... a charging stab attack... a back flip kick attack... swarms of bouncing yin-yang orbs... oh god what game am I playing here?!"
Hands-down the best version of this theme. There's an elegant simplicity to it that none of the later versions have. I don't quite know how to describe it, but there's this emptiness to it that feels fitting for the beginning of HRtP, and the beginning of Touhou as a whole. It just feels right that the massive and vibrant world that ZUN has created should start out feeling so empty in the beginning, before he's had a chance to fill it. The entire experience of Highly Responsive to Prayers makes me feel like I'm standing beside ZUN and watching him create Gensokyo before my very eyes.
This or the DiPP version honestly, kind of a bit of a tangent here but I don't like how some uploaders use the Akyu's Untouched versions and try to pass it off as the ingame versions.

Any old retro game that wasn't not in the early stages always had a serious and meaningful tone in their songs. Or if you really felt it, back when creating a game was more than creating a game.
I've heard in other comment sections, and I agree, that PC-98's soundtrack gives off a sense of melancholy or nostalgia, even if you've never heard it before.
I think ZUN's musical talent goes seriously unrecognized. Sure, touhou has it's own fanbase, but imagine how famous he would have become if he had made music for some really mainstream titles, like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.
SửperKợnaŧẳ The main, most important factor to touhou's massive popularity is that Shanghai Alice is not a big corporation. What a piece. Sure it wouldn't surprise me if any person who plays this game for the first time would want to play this song irl with his favorite instrument. So did I. It's just so beautiful and the fact ZUN wrote and or composed it being so young merely indicates how he was born to bring these outstanding pieces of sound into the world or, should I say, our side of it? Majestic. Magnificence indeed.
For some reasons, I feel nostalgic about Touhou PC-98 games, even though I first played Touhou 1 a month ago (and before playing Touhou, I didn't even know what a PC-98 was, I thought it was just Windows 98). 8-bit vibes I guess
Lol, the thing about PC-98 just being Windows 98 is so relatable. For me it's that whenever I mention the PC-98 era games to my dad, he always is like "What's a PC-98? Is it just a PC running on Windows 98?" And I just have to be like "No dad, you ask this everytime, it's not, it's own kind of computer."
Why does every playlist for the PC-98 games use the MS version of songs? The originals are nice too. I like HRtP's original soundtrack more than the remixed ones.
If I remember right, HRtP uses an older PC-98 music format that is a pain in the ass to extract on modern computers. Hoot and other PC98 software can play the files from 2-5 easily, 1 still is hard.
One day, I want ZUN to remake the PC-98 games, or at least make the older characters come back. Touhou games are amazing the way they are now, but still. It's a good idea, after all--tobehonest--I'm getting a little bit bored of new characters over and over (they're still cool though), and I'd like some of the older ones to return. Maybe some characters come back for revenge? Maybe they become playable and help solve an incident? It'd be awesome!
Mima is the big one i agree on, like Mima, in the pc-98 days was literally the third most important character, with Reimu in first and Marisa only beating her due to Touhou 1's (Mima's first appearence) lack of dialogue. also, Mima is tied with YuugenMagen for being the 3rd touhou character to exist. and yet she was shoved aside and most of her character traits were absorbed into Marisa
This feels a lot more like a bittersweet conclusion than anything else. I can easely imagine the border of gensokyo slowly falling apart and returning to a dream while everything fades into white with this song as the background music.
I like this version of the soundtrack a lot. It serves as a great companion to the version Akyuu hasn't touched. I need huge cuts around 10 kHz to listen to it, but it's an amazing piece of work.
When I listen to this piece, I get so many chills. It's so nostalgic and somewhat melancholic. It is as if I feel Reimu's burdens as the Shrine Maiden of a fantasy realm whenever I hear this piece. But at the same time it is dreamy; the phantasm that is Gensokyo embodies Reimu and vice versa. The piece seems so fragile as well, for Reimu is only human. Marisa will eventually become a Youkai, that's fairly obvious, Sanae a goddess and Sakuya manipulates time. But Reimu? Sariel is waiting for her.
Damn. I'm fucking speechless. Before loading this up the only song I'd heard from the PC-98 games (as in the original song, not an arrange) was Bad Apple! and I wasn't really expecting much since this is from the first game, but ZUN has proven his awesomeness to me. Even from the beginning this man was a fucking God at making music for his games. Going to go get an emulator for this right the hell now.
I was rewatching NakaTeleeli's awesome Let's Play of Touhou Mother. In the game, when Reimu was "in her mind", this song started to play.
