Everything Brian makes feels like insider outsider art. He knows he’s making music, but he’s never really aware of what exactly he’s brought upon this Earth.
Wouldn't it be nice if PhDs were stroking me with hypotheses. Come the fuck on. This is yet another Brian Wilson work of genius. Way ahead of its time with its pro woman message in rap too.
Well, considering all the objectifying, male chauvinism, and misogyny that has gone on in rhyming circles since 1991, perhaps he still is ahead of his time?
ok...? you really think you can say that to him? no, as his wife (loving, dedicated) im not happy about this, you can appreciate him from afar but next time if you say you love him say i love you brian (platonic) but me i love him romantic carnal friendly and love truly
The chorus is the only thing that says Beach Boys here. This is hysterically depressing from the backstory of this song, as Landy beseeched Brian into gettin' around the then non-existent rap game. This is avant-rap that even Death Grips would piss their pants at. The first minute of this song is hauntingly distressing.
Hahaha, without a single shred of bias and disregarding the fact that I'm comparing Brian and Mike, this is still not as bad, embarrassing or creepy as "Summer of Love". Of course it's still goofy.
I can just see Landy in the studio with the producer. "I dunno, man. I think we should just cut our losses and have Brian rapping." "NO! MORE SAMPLES! NO ONE WILL KNOW WHO HE IS!!!!!"
Pretty horrible, I would say. But it's fun! Puts certain images in your head. It just seems so odd that it's even the same person who produced all those 60's gems. Imagine a 1967 Brian recording this: "Wow, this sounds really out of sight, man! I think this is really gonna turn on!"
Author/musician Jason Hartley wrote: "What is important was that Wilson was embracing rap when many older rockers thought that rap wasn't real music. As ridiculous as 'Smart Girls' may seem to you today, at the very least, Brian Wilson was on the right side of history." That's it man!
Even if I believe that this was more Wilson's doing than anyone else's, if he was embracing rap he wouldn't be riding lyrics like this. This seems more like satire than anything else. It's so clean cut it makes the Kidz bop kids blush and oh dear lord those samples, if you can even call them that.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. This song is a masterpiece. It clearly represents Brian's downward spiral into madness as production of his magnum opus "SMiLE" came crashing down right before his eyes and the ensuing "therapy" from Eugine Landy in a desperate attempt to climb out of the pit he ended up in. Listen to the emotion in Brian's voice as he sings the line "I write hit songs with the wave of my hand", a line calling back to his glory days of writing chart toppers like "I Get Around" with his old band, the Beach Boys. Observe those complex chord changes in the backing track and the jazz-inspired synth in the background, obviously inspired by the old masters such as Louis Armstrong. This song should be mandatory listening in music programs everywhere to instruct aspiring musicians how not to write a song and then put on Pet Sounds to demonstrate what good music should sound like because I think this song gave me terminal 7 brain cancer.
When I play this track to people, I've found that around 2:15 is the point where they look at me with an expression that seems to say "Am I losing my MIND?!"
Circa 1989. It was supposed to be on an unreleased experimental solo album called Sweet Insanity, in 1991- which featured a number of recordings Brian was working on in the late 80s/early 90s.
Not exactly B-Dubbs' Finest moment, but the man made Pet Sounds, and this is one of those "so bad it's good" kind of things for me, so I give it a thumbs-up.

ive listened to most of the monkees’s head album. one of, if not, the trippest soundtrack ever. this song, is trippier than like half the songs on the soundtrack. brian outdid himself.
In 1989 Brian Wilson began recording "Sweet Insanity", an album that was due for release in 1991 but was rejected by Sire. The album was made during one of Wilson's supposedly troubled periods when he was under the influence of psychologist Eugene Landy (who was listed as a co-producer) and included guest performances by both Bob Dylan and Weird Al Yankovic. The album has long been available as a bootleg and four of the songs were subsequently released on later albums.
I've never heard anyone rap this badly before, and I've heard a lot of bad rapping. This is now my go-to example for explaining to people that just like your singing can be off-key your rapping can be just as profoundly wrong.
QueenVoltalia Hey-o! In all seriousness though, Iggy can actually pull off quite a neat flow if she wants to. I don't think the trouble with her is the basic rapping ability, but rather her persona and subject matter.
@Bob Ransom-Not sure if it was Devo, Talking Heads...or some other similar group. it used to be on youtube. It was one of the oddest things Brian has ever done on tape, lol. Definitely smelled of Landy.

This should have been presented in court as evidence of Eugene Landy's criminal behavior, and more generally his malignant influence on Brian.
