This video reminded me of how much of a standout Nia’s voice actress is in this game, literally the line “I am burdened no longer” has been stuck in my head since i first played the game. Like you can hear the relief and gratitude so clearly. It’s like singlehandedly why I can’t imagine playing with the japanese voices despite some other shakiness in the dub. I may be two years late but great video!
I really love that scene where they tear into Rex for being a coward. That was such a great scene because they really didn't hold back and I LOVED that. Brigid and Morag too were epic in that scene (Morag is always epic)
This entire video made me rethink that a favourite character even is. I used to just like the ones with the nice designs, interesting stories, etc. This made me realize that there were characters that I relate to and I never even thought about it
the majority of the time for me it's just based on design or personality, but there has never been a character that has made me feel as many different emotions as nia has

Years late to this but it's only aged like a fine wine. I'm glad someone could put into words how great of a character Nia is not just objectively from a writing standpoint but from a personal connection. This is only reinforced further with context from 3 and I hope this channel and the series continue to flourish
Fantastic video! Nia is my favorite character in Xenoblade 2 and is my 2nd favorite in the series just behind Shulk. As someone who is quite insecure and constantly reevaluating myself to an obnoxious degree, Nia’s story is so damn powerful. On my first playthrough I didn’t even realize how much her story could read as a trans narrative, but noticing all these details you’ve mentioned just give her character even more meaning than it previously did. Seeing her break free of her fear and showing the party who she is, that is powerful stuff. I love how everyone moves on right after too. They’re just like “oh, she’s a blade, that’s dope!” Although I have to say, I don’t like the scene where Rex is like “why didn’t you tell us Nia?” and essentially shames her for not coming out sooner… Thankfully Morag calls him out on it, but still, I think it’s the most unlikable Rex moment. (This is coming from someone who loves Rex btw). I think you’ve summarized Nia perfectly though, thanks for shedding light on how great of a character she truly is.
GODDD i hate rex in that scene. his behavior doesn't even make any sense when he and nia were getting along great immediately before it, + rex seemed to genuinely have a good understanding of the fact there's a stigma behind being a flesh eater with cole, jin, and torna
I definitely agree with her character arch being relatable to trans people. Without the context of the game the scene at 7:00 could also look like they're realizing she's trans
Anyone that has being socially ostracized for things they were forced to do and/or who they am can on some level relate to Nia, trans, gay, school outcast, minority.
It's really nice knowing that I wasn't alone in finding Nia's arc relatable as a trans person! I played XC2 well before I explicitly knew I was trans, but even then I knew how I felt about Nia was something unique.
I agree with that and nia is also my favourite character of xenoblade chronicles 2 and for me it is easy to relate to her because I was afraid of what my family might say about me being trans but then i found my bf who accept me as who i am and he also gave me the strength to come out to my family and they as well accept it even though I'm still at the beginning I'm still glad to have met my bf ^^
Plenty of times I wanted to cosplay as Nia or use her avatar in vrchat, but was reluctant because I didn't have a welsh accent. Thanks for helping me realize that I don't have to have my voice sound an exact way to be who I want to be. (p.s. Glad Xenoblade 2 got a rep in Smash Ultimate)
I just wanted to say I didn't truly appreciate this video until now. When I first watched this, I had an entirely different view of the world than I do now. I let my hateful, bigoted views cloud my judgment. This video is very beautiful, and I can 100% see why you relate to Nia so well. When I was watching a let's play and there was that hot spring scene when the girls asked "Nia, are you..." and she said "Yeah, but don't tell anyone." I thought that she would be trans
Though, to be genuine for a moment, I do think Nia is the best character in the Xenoblade series. The only issue I have with her is that I think her blade design falls too hard on the fanservice-y side of things. At least, that's what I would say, if I was even allowed to have an opinion.
@@robinnVA I agree. Comparing her Driver design with her Blade design shows how she's no longer afraid of showing her (frankly beautiful) body. For those who don't know, all Blades have these glowing Ether lines and circles on their bodies (those are most visible when you perform specials), so Nia always wore those clothes to hide her lines and the fact that she's a blade.
Eh, she seems to practical minds to run around without any doubt anything covering her legs. There is dialogue in Tantal where she doesn’t to cuddle with Dromarch bed cause of murder on her skin but when she is in blade form her thighs and Burt cheeks are exposed. It kinda like she woke up, put on her fanciest evening, dancing, etc clothes put to forgot to dress herself from the waist down.
I absolutely love her too. Rex messed up big time by choosing pyra over her. Pyra is pretty amazing but, Nia is just rhe greatest person in that universe and imo she would make a better and more interesting partner. Also in her real form, she's just as attractive as pythra and in her hidden form she's adorable too Also, THAT ACCENT!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!! Also the mugshot thing is genuinely one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in a game. Probably THE funniest

Roc is canonicaly nonbinary too. In japan they only use gender neutral pronouns, and in the games code Roc's gender is 4 (1-3 is for male, female, and beast). Too bad Roc lose's all relavence after their reawakening.
One of the first things I noticed was how androgenous your voice sounded, along with the mention of "boyfriend" which led me to conclude that you were likely on the LGBT spectrum and I was wondering if that would come up, because I had also noticed transgender themes in her arc. It felt so validating to hear those very themes I'd noticed brought to the forefront, along with your own gender identity. I've spent time imagining how things could play out in a mundane AU, and I never had any doubt that she would actually be transgender in that situation. Funny how an anime trope that people predicted from the hot springs scene, while not being true, would still hit closer than people may have thought.

I wasn’t a fan of Xenoblade 2, but Nia is one of my favorite characters in the game. Her sass, great voice acting, and well rounded character arc. I wish she was the one in Smash.
The real question is what you guys think of the 2.5 new cats in Xenoblade 3. 1.5 is (probably) Nia's actual daughter, while the other skips the trans arc and jumps straight to being officially nyan-binary. There is technically one more, but we haven't actually met her yet and we'll probably get to see her in action in the DLC.
