Can’t believe 12 weeks already. Mine are 11 weeks Sunday. What food you have pullets on? The finisher? Had to order more grower feed and bought more starter for my next batch gonna set tomorrow fingers crossed 🤞

Yep, the pullets are on the finishing feed too but I did do a 2 week delay on them since the duds will be harvested later.

Hey, on the shallow chest roosters… How long do you wait for it to drop in before deciding they are bound for dinner? Like it needs to fill in to have a good shrink bag look, so by 14-16 weeks? My situation is most of my boys in the grow out pen seem wide, but chest depth isn’t really there & I want to focus on that.

I look for it as soon as I can. Some may never develop a good chest and others are way late, which I'm also not interested in. I haven't made enough gains with it yet to sort through chicks, but some pretty well established lines of other purebred breeds will show chest depth in the first week. The tricky part is stepping back to look at over all balance, and not choosing a narrow bird because it has a deeper chest, unless you have a mate for that bird who is a little extra wide to compensate for it in the chicks. If you spend too much time on one feature, you might lost ground in others. So what you're really looking for are those birds that are most balanced/correct in all areas, or the birds with the "parts and pieces" to breed better to choose from later. Find the bird that has the deepest chest of all, then step back and evaluate everything else about that bird.

@@arcadianorchard thank you so much! I’m screenshot Ing that so I can remind myself when I’m looking at them again… I really need to get some put in the freezer because I’ve got so many to choose from edging their way up to 14 weeks next week…

I’m jealous you can crouch down near your birds and not have them treat you like a jungle gym 😂
