Renault's F1 Anti-Lag System Uncovered

- Turbo Anti-Lag Systems are well known today, but at the start of the first Formula 1 Turbo Era there was one, you've never even heard about - the Dispositif Pre*rotation Variable - or short "DPV" engineered by Renault's Formula One engine genius - Jean Pierre Boudy.
It's a very clever way to spool up a turbocharger, maybe just as clever as the Subaru “Jet Engine” - Rocket Anti-Lag - but with less flames, much older and based on the Russian Swirl Throttle.

Is this system applicable to diesel engines as well?? Great editing btw, just slow down a little :)
The same principle should also should work on normally throttle-less diesel engines. But turbochargers on diesel engines usually don't come with the seals that would be required to make it work. Traditional turbocharger seals CAN NOT seal against a vacuum on the compressor side. And if this is happens on a diesel.... sucking in oil and air will make it runaway. Maybe worth a try, but better not ^^
This video explains turbo charger sealing in more detail, maybe worth watching for you: th-cam.com/video/X4vNbVxz0Xc/w-d-xo.html
Editor: How do you want this edited?
Maisteer: Yes.
EXACTLY haha
the editing is on point my dood.
I know right? 😂insanely good
I can't wait for next year's video.
Onggg I lost it when the guy shined a flashlight on the turbo
how many explosions are we going to have in this video?
Editor: yes
Awesome. Only 10 hours ago I was lamenting that it had been 4 months since the last video, so I turned on notifications. 10 hours later.... HE APPEARS.
They gave homie a green screen and a dream and the rest is history. Goated editing my dude. _G O A T E D_
What is this channel and WHY does it ONLY have 32k subs. So glad I found this
This editting is amazingly unhinged :D
I dont think i ever laughed thus hard at a video about cars before
This is now my favourite channel.
The subaru rally anti lag system is still one of the most impressive to me, I feel nothing beats it!! Hearing a turbo at full boost whilst the car is at idle is mesmerising... So much engineering went into it.

The Subaru system is great, until you price out inconel and realize those combustors have a very limited lifespan
@@yucannthahvitt251its nothing for consumer use lol its professional use only, just cool to marvel at haha
@yucannthahvitt251 you can make them from 321 or even 304, there is a pikes peak camaro that has an external combustor from stainless. The hardest thing is making it work with the electronics. A lot of dynotime = expensive
I forgot how much i liked this channel, time to catch up again
Darn I was caught up...
The editing kept me engaged more than the content
same, plus the humor
🤣
Alright that editing was amazing, also when i get my paycheck i may just donate a little
Darn this wa sawesome I cant believe how much efford and production value there is here! I really enjoeyed the video, and cant wait for more. Doesnt have to be exhaust, although I love those, anything from you is automatically great.
but why isnt this used more widely today?
You need to turn on autocorrect bro
Please sell whatever you fed to your editor, even if it's not legal. I wont tell anyone.
I second this idea
Any update on that V12?
Fun video, btw!
Completely mental editing
Loved it
Incredible!
A different topic this time, but reality is - I CAN NOT make another exhaust video without you clicking here: maisteers-exhaust-sound-resear.ch
You don't want another exhaust video? - Don't click it!
😭
I really hope some people actually donate to see the series continue!
@@ThaDutchDK1989 "Some people make a living ... with “”just “” 300k viewers .."
- maybe, but this is missing a lot of context.
Do they have something else they sell? How many videos they publish per month and in what niche? Do they have Sponsorships or paid memberships? How much do their videos cost to make? How long does it take to make them?
My previous video was not free to make, and it took a long time to make it. When my first one went viral, the channel was not even monetized to benefit from it (at first). I invested money and time to make them - and I'd like to think they've provided a lot of value to the people that watched them. They've covered some things, I have never seen covered anywhere before. And I've learned myself a lot while making them.
But there's something else I've learned recently... Advertisers HATE to pay for advertising in January, the month when the last video got the most traction.
The first day of January the 'revenue-per-view' was almost 3x times lower than the day the video was released.
I've enjoyed putting in the time and learning new stuff along the way, but I think that context is needed to understand the situation.
From my perspective the way forward now is to make videos that don't cost money to make (and only when I can afford the time to make them).
Someday that might open up the door to continue to do the content that I'm really interested in. (and seemingly most of my viewers)
But until that day comes, there is now the option for the people that see the value in my videos to accelerate this process.
There are now two options to get more of my content - you can pay with your money or your lifetime. You choose.
Top quality content as always! It’s great to see so much work put into the videos!
I’ve made another donation to the exhaust research fund. Your V12 videos were a breath of fresh air - entertaining and informative. Helped so much with my m70 exhaust!
Have you thought about merch? Hats/tshirts/hoodies? I’d buy one!!!
@@cp10mat76Thanks again for your support and I'm so glad you could get something out of my videos for your project. That's the point of making them.
As for merch. I've seen the hassle my friend has had doing it, and he only delivers in one country. Since most of my viewers are not even from the country I live in, I've then also have to deal with customs in addition. I would spread myself to thin, if I would try to handle that by myself at the moment.
TH-cam had not suggested any of your videos until today. I really enjoyed the combination of teaching and humor in this one. Time for some binge watching!
Just did a subscription spring cleaning, and wanted to let you know the smile I had when I saw the name, and remembered the v12 video. Here we are my friend, thanks for another banger.
Greg is the man to go for turbo/supercharging info.
I really want to see an electric turbo pump with a COPV reservoir, used as a car turbo.
Vastly fewer moving parts, instantaneous reaction.
This could be quite interesting setup on BMW engines with Valvetronic. Variable lift should allow for pretty much always open throttle and even better response and finer control.
Love this channel, keep up the well made and interesting content!
Algorithm blessed me today
this video felt like a fever dream and i love it
My God...the level of editing, BRAVO!
I could watch an entire series from @Maisteer Keep up the amazing work!
i was amazed by the facts i see in this video but i'm extremely impressed with the editing skill,
bro you're on another level 💪
this was as overedited as mlg compilatons while being educational. mindblowing amount of work i imagine. awesome!
This is an insanely well done video. The amount of editing probably took a whole team.
Bravo.
that was a trip of a video, even sober
Mate your channel is pure genius ! It’s so fun to watch ❤
Incredible effort put on to the video Maisteer, keep it up!
i didnt understand anything about anti lag system but it was fun to watch keep it going dude!
Probably the best editing I've came across om TH-cam my god
Darn, your videos are so great, I don't get why they are sometimes so unpopular. I think I've seen never before such editing, and I like it. Keep up the good work, greetings from Russia!
😂😂😂
Great job on the editing
Its like a plesant fever dream
This is the most briliantly edited informational video I've seen lmao
your editor is on crack
You should have more followers and monetization support! Videos are of remarkable production quality, info and knowledge is well and thoroughly presented. So good and entertaining. You can make it big my friend. I think if you got some sponsors behind you and did regular content millions of guys would watch your vids!
Great video, love the memes and references.
Damn ur Videos are crazy good. Love these deep dives into engineering with amazing editing and storytelling
The quality of your videos is incredible. Thank you
1:29 I should not be laughing so hard, but I can't help it.
Outstanding editing, absolutely epic
I can’t figure out what’s more impressive. Your editing skills and creativity or the turbo design. to be fair I would say it’s 50-50 lol
The editing is so tight my brain got melted
Quickly turned into my favorite car channel. Your editing and humor is perfect, and your Blender skills are amazing. At least I think you're using Blender.
Glad you like it. Much of the video is done in blender, except for the airplane scene in the beginning - that's made with Unreal Engine.
@@maisteer Your experiments have immediately won a sizeable chunk of my next paycheck. I have a lot of respect for fellow CG artists.
Special officer Doofy loves himself some hoover action
This gave me early 2000's documentaries editing vibes, love that
Excellent video and editing
such quality content, props to you and the creator
Your editing is the best I have ever seen more videos please my dude 😂❤
Not to be like I did know that this existed but I know it as a "Guide vane throttle" I know Cosworth were using it in the 80's and 90's, but I did not know where it came from. Nice video.
Great video, great edit, sounds, NICE!!! Subscribed.
very nice video, would love to see more of this!
First time in the channel, loved the content and edit!! congratz
same here,
and just subd now too
Just discovered your channel!- hilarious! - You've earned a sub! ;)
I watch your videos mainly for the comedic value 😂
My response to this video was instant. Thank You Sir.
fifth upload and already got 32k subs wow. very good citations, editing and animations
Great video format ! awesome
Another brilliant effort with this one man, best of luck with views!
Thanks. I'm glad you found your way back once again ^^ - best of luck this year with the drift season too!
@@maisteer Thanks so much man, appreciate it along with your crazy edited videos and commitment to interesting rare automotive topics. I have to admit I was not in the loop on this technology, very cool, got me wondering and researching. Stav Tech did a interesting / successful experiment with this, I'm tempted to try one as well. I also wonder if you were using the same system in the M30B35 turbo S13?
Looking forward to the next production!
What was the maximum number of layers you had composited on top of each other in that intro segment?!?!? Incredible.
I can't remember, but the project file had like 19 video tracks in the end - my personal record ^^
@@maisteerExtremely impressive work sir! :-))
Nice to see a vídeo from fueltech CEO showing the stuff irl, i follow this guys a long time ago
Just awesome editing! And interesting topic!
this video is so bizarre XD 🔥🔥 time to spend the rest of the week learning about this lol
This kind of video is so good👌🏼 Really funny video
Forgot I had subbed. Watched video.
Now I remember why. 👌
Soo happy you uploaded another mastapiece
That was a great video. Kept me to the end. Good job.
The plot twist at the end got me
For the love of everything that is holy, please make more videos. This is like Engineering Explained and Dave Attell; I am learning so much and laughing my ass off at the jokes per minute at the same time.
Enjoy your videos man keep them coming 😎👍
editing 10/10

what a high quality explanation. Love this!
I seriously love this channel. Learn something new every time. You’re fantastic.
Edit: 5 gallons of gas for you.
You're just as fantastic. ^_^
Thanks to supporters like you, we can test some more theory's soon. I've send you an email with an update on what we have been up to since the last V12 video.
I just now realized how many subscribers you have. I thought it would be over a million.
Such a high production value, gg dude
You've just declared war with the global armadillo population after that comment
Excellent presentation, thanks for sharing
We makin’ it out the tenner club with this one 💯💯
insane editing
definitely right your editing is very entertaining Great job.
literally insane editing
I’m on the edge of my seat about the v12 exhaust fix mate
My high school car was a '66 Corvair Turbo. MUCHO LAG. My Dad's identical twin brother was Chief Engineer for Outboard Marine Corporation's Lawn Boy Division. Dad worked on airliners with piston engines, turboprops, turbojets and turbofans. They came up with the idea of locking the Corvair's carburetor butterfly open and making the foot throttle turn the distributor instead. It had the disadvantage that the exhaust pipes all glowed yellow and it drank gas at a fantastic rate. But the manual transmission car AT IDLE kept the turbo spooled up to an estimated 90,000 rpm.
Not long after that Uncle Jerry came up with what he called "The Mechanical Switch" because it operated much the way a railroad track switch works. Thrown one way the gas pedal operated with the distributor locked at stock 24 degrees and it opened the carburetor like when stock. Throw the small lever on the floor the other way and the carb locked wide open and the gas pedal took the distributor from 24 degrees AFTER Top Dead Center at idle all the way to the normal 24 BTDC.
It took more than three whole seconds off the car's standing start 1/4 elapsd time.
This is a good piece of history to be experimented.
Maybe, you know 😉
About to got to bed, but this is sooo fking good I had to finish, funny and super informative.
I'm trying to learn and take this seriously but the editing has me 😂🤣😂😂😂 at tymes. This is very informative though 😂🤣😂🤣👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
10/10 I really enjoy watching your videos entertaining and educating keep them coming
OMG the editing is such an over the top effort for this type of video 😂😂😂
So this is why the renault modus is the greatest car ever made
really good editing, i dint give a shit about anti lag systems but i watched the whole thing.
Love your style
Very cool channel! Watched your other exhaust videos, your doing a great job demystifying a complex and often misunderstood subject. Keep up the videos bro
fantastic video thank you.
Bahaha The JT reference though
This video is so random it's wonderful 😂
NICE GREENSCREEN! Super awesome video Turbofam!
