  • This new model train video features my young neighbor, Gavin, as he helps me set up a G scale train track layout in my back yard and then runs the trains while I work the video cameras and the drone.
    Featured in this video are:
    Emily from Thomas & Friends, by Bachmann trains
    The White Pass Steam train, by Piko
    An Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe steam train, by Piko

    Toby ended up being a banker. If Emily had caught up with Toby from behind, then it would have been a better double-header. A double-header is formed when two steamies or diesels are coupled together in front of a passenger or heavy goods train. Toby is a bit faster than Emily, so Emily should have caught up from behind. Take the tip of Sam's Trains: when you decide to have two engines hauling a train double-header fashion, keep the slowest engine at the back. If you watch his old Thomas Story, James' Accident, you'll see what I'm talking about. If the two engines are of the same speed, it doesn't matter which gets the back seat, if you'll pardon the term here. As I say, if one steamy is faster than the other, the slower one has to be at the back, otherwise derailments will occur. Have lots of steamy fun.

    You should do a video where 2 trains race each other around the circuit. Each train that wins gets to compete agents the next runner up and then into the final race with the 2 remaining trains. Actually that would make for another Great Model Train Race video. On another note, an idea for dead mans curve. Go on eBay and buy yourself an old beater Bachmann Big Hauler locomotive that's only good for parts and have it laying down over the edge of the walkway as if it crashed and was left there. All the crew perished in the accident and it is their final resting place. It would not only give the curves name a purpose, but would add some background scenery as well. The big advantage is those models can be picked up for dirt cheap even in running condition.

    you are slightly incorrect on terminology in regards to Toby. If he was directly behind Emily and in front of the two passenger cars, he would've made a doubleheader with Emily. But at the end of the train, Toby has become a rear end Helper Engine to push from the back. On some longer freight trains on freight railroads, there are even helper engines in the middle of the train

    Fantastic! As you have a incredibly huge backyard, will you add some stuff like a shunting or a narrow gauge railway or something like that? Not saying you have to do that, just asking if you will take advantage of having this amazing backyard. If you do, just as a idea, you could replicate something they did in Germany: transporting standard gauge waggons on narrow gauge waggons (LGB makes those waggons). So that's a idea, but if you don't want to change it if you don't want to :)

      @@JimZim , what a mean was, you can buy like 12 ft of used other branded track that's in ok shape for much cheaper that LGB, lgb is the premium brand of track/top of the line. If you watch ebay you can find some pretty good deals on track by the lot that people are getting rid of, because it would be under cement, if the plastics are in ok shape they'll be fine because they are out the UV rays of the sun.
      sometimes if you get it cheap enough it might be less than $.50 to a dollar a foot in some cases.
      but then again the money you save buying it on ebay you will pay for in shipping, so nevermind. its been a while since I've looked at the market.
      I went from O scale to G then back to O, & i think O is probably the biggest i willver get. Beyond that, & I could build a miniature ride on train for that price out of used materials, & make it myself.

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting... I never noticed that. That particular caboose had a little problem with its coupler... and had a tendency to disconnect while the train was running. If I didn't notice it, a train would come along behind it and crash in to the caboose. So, that's probably what happened... the caboose disconnected and then another train hit it and derailed it... and then I probably was in a big rush to put the caboose back on the track in the middle of shooting the video... and just totally missed the fact that I had put it on backwards.

    How much costs for 707 train with coco cola steam?

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G scale trains are very expensive, and are not something that most people can afford. The locomotives typically cost from $600 to $1200 and each of the rail cars close to $200. The track is insanely expensive at over $7 per foot. You also need a control system to power and operate the trains. That typically costs about $500. So, depending on how much track you buy, you can easily spend thousands of dollars on this stuff.
      Also, both the 707 train and Coca Cola train were produced in limited quantities and have long since sold out. So, even if you wanted to buy one now... it's too late. Of course, there are other G-scale trains you could buy... but those particular two you mentioned are collectors items now.

      I haven't cruised with Celebrity yet, but have done quite a few with Royal Caribbean. I really like the Quantum-class Royal Caribbean ships. The food was to my liking, and I really like the design of the cabins. On the Quantum-class, I feel like there's no need to book a suite because the regular balcony cabins are so well designed.
      The thing that's holding me back on trying Celebrity is the food. My impression is that they're shooting for very high end presentation... basically what some might call foo-foo food. My tastes in food are much more casual. Give me a barbecue joint at sea any day! Or a casual Mexican restaurant. Really, I'm quite comfortable in the buffet on a Quantum-class ship. So, Celebrity's reputation for high end food scares me a bit!
      Yeah, we have an 85" Sony TV in our living room. It's actually far too small for the room! Really, the big wall that it is on, and the long distance to our theater-style sofa, calls for a much larger TV. I'm not talking about 100" or anything like that. Something more like 140" or 150" is what the room really needs, believe it or not. Someday! Right now, it would just be too pricey.

    In this video, we introduce Jim Zim's new Washington neighbor, Gavin, who helps him set up the G scale model trains to run on the layout.
    Gavin controls the G scale model trains from a tablet and you, Jim Zim, fly the DJI Mavic Mini drone and shoot video of the G scale model trains running on the layout in the backyard of the house in Washington.
    We see three G scale model trains from Bachmann, two trains from LGB, and two trains from Piko on the layout on both sets of tracks that wrap around the lawn.
    That makes a total of seven G scale model trains running on two sets of tracks and being powered by both analog and Digital Command Control or for short, DCC.
    James the Really Super Splendid #5 Red Tender Engine pulling the goods train as well as Toby the #7 Brown Steam Tram Engine both of them had snuck up behind Emily and the Jim Zim passenger coaches and they both latch on to make double headers.
    And if Toby and James have both snuck up behind Emily and the Jim Zim passenger coaches and are latched on together at the same time, they will make a triple header, pushing and pulling 2 trains at once to make one mixed train.
    And also Gavin lined up 4 trains in a row: the Christmas Coca Cola train #1 and the black Euro-German Porter #3 both made by LGB, and also two Piko brand G scale model trains pulling 2 goods trains.
    One of the 2 Piko brand G scale model trains is the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe steam locomotive #707, and the other is the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway Steam locomotive #52.
    And we also hear the sounds of animals being transported on the layout from the yellow livestock boxcar from the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway freight train.
    This is Thomas Comeau, signing off for today, and as always, Happy New Year's Eve, Jim Zim!

    • @thomascomeau9271
      @thomascomeau9271 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, JYI, you should have had the caboose of the Christmas Coca Cola steam train manufactured by LGB turned around and be behind the white Coca Cola tank car or one of the red Coca Cola boxcars including one with a speaker and sound system inside of it!
      And you should have checked to see if all the wheels of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway steam locomotive #52 from Piko are on the tracks!
      As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!

      As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim and I love your collection of 25 not so very soon to be 26 G scale model trains!

      I'm really not planning on adding any new trains to my collection anytime soon. While a Union Pacific locomotive seems like the logical next item to add to my collection, I'm simply not planning on making the leap for quite a while.

    Ok. So you enjoy the hot tub better. Ok. After all this is Washington State. I’m all the way in Florida. The sunshine state. I have a pool and a hot tub. And I love it. And my pool deck has enough room for larger scale trains.

      The G scale version of those engines do not make sounds. Only Thomas and Percy do.

    Since you said you made that pile of rocks one wheelbarrow load at a a time, I presume your carpal tunnel surgery was a success.

      Oh, yes... it was a total success. I ended up only needing it on my right hand. After I retired, I stopped having any problems with the left hand. Both hands are great now.

    Doesn’t you trains get ruined during rain storms?!

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't leave them out all the time. I set them up, run them for a couple of days, make a video, and put them all away again. Also, where I live now, we only get an average of 8 inches of rain over an entire year.

      Also ...a lot of people do garden layouts. By what I gather the track doesn’t weather a hole lot.
