In the '70s, Robbie played in a blues band in the Woodstock, NY area -- Chrome Willy and the Sparks. You might not guess it from this hit, but he's a good blues singer and plays a mean harmonica.
Songs transport me the way a certain scent does. I remember being 4 years old sitting in the waiting room of my doctors office and this was playing. It was a cold winter evening, it was already dark out and I remember my snow boots were making my feet really hot. 🤣
Don't forget Michael Mc stole this vibe from Steely Dan, so the wheels go round n round. Venom is right about the lyrics. They are ABC like most hip hop. You guys are great and thanks!!!
The Jimmy Fallon show used to do a Yacht Rock tribute (I think yearly, but not 100% sure) and one time they had Robbie Dupree singing this song with The Roots and it was phenomenal. It seems to have been scrubbed from the internet since NBC is hardcore about their intellectual property.
Always loved this song! I`ve never gotten the connection to What A Fool Believes with it..of course I was young when I owned the record(still have the single)
Now THIS could be called "Yacht Rock" if such a genre actually existed. You also should check out KEY LARGO by Bertie Higgins and ESCAPE (the Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes.
It's not a rip-off at all. Even if you hear a similarity somewhere, that does not make it a rip off. Every single artist is influenced by someone somewhere.
Oh my word! I have not heard this since 1980. I do not avoid it nor do I seek it. I must say, I never enjoyed it so much before hearing y'all taljing about it.
The Yacht Rock doc was right! This song IS a straight ripoff of "What A Fool Believes," almost a direct replica of Michael McDonald's keyboard line from that song. So much so that many people often assume this is a Michael McDonald and/or Doobie Bros track, until they learn who actually wrote and recorded it. I loved that line from the Yacht Rock doc where somebody being interviewed says something like, "It's no wonder this song is called 'Steal Away,' since they stole it directly from Michael McDonald!" 😆 That cracked me up.
It's was ok. Not one I ran out and bought the album, or went to any of their concerts. If it came on the radio, or someone played it on the jukebox, ok. That's about all I can say.
It has a similar rhythm to the way the keyboard is playing, so it has a similar feel in some ways, but it's still a completely different song than "What a Fool Believes." I will admit though that it sounds as if it could'av been written by Michael McDonald.
2 Good Chicago classics This Is It would enjoy would be I'm a Man & Dialogue Parts 1 & 2. Both bring the funk. Live is O.K. if they are England black & white for the 1st and New Years Eve for the 2nd.
Great song. Yeah, it might sound a little like what a fool believes, but all genres in their respective time eras sounded similar. Its the formulas that record companies have been using forever. You can't tell me that rap, disco, Motown, 80s brit pop, heavy metal, grunge and Chicago blues don't all sound similar in their own genres one way or another.
At least Robbie stole from the best. For another cool blue-eyed soul tune from that same year (1979), check out "Suspicions" by Eddie Rabbitt. The pop country artist took a totally different route for a smooth, slinky hit.
One request- stop calling it Yacht Rock! - when that show called Donald Fagan the surviving member of Steely Dan was called to be on that special they asked him “Do you want to be on the Yacht Rock documentary? He replied “The what?”..: and they said “Yacht Rock” and he just said back “F@@k You” and hung up. Rick Beats who has 5 million subs on his music channel showed that mic drop clip a few weeks ago. So consider it an insult! Actually call it whatever you want it smooth jazz and funk mixed with rock and it’s great ….
Yeah well, the back ground rhythm is never gonna win you a copyright suit, it's the melody that counts in court. I can play you 350 blues songs that have damn near identical background rhythms, that won't mean shit in court. It's all about the lead melody, and this ain't the same. Are they similar? Yeah, in a few different places, are they the same? Nope.
Fenom, you're complaining that a pop song's lyrics aren't too profound? Love songs are love songs buddy. You can't tell me that today's top 40 music has profound lyrics. Start reading poetry if you want something profound. 😂
Well, growing up smack dab in the middle of all these great songs from the '70s I don't see enough similarities to make it a big deal. It's a great song in its own right and I've always loved it, plus, a lot of songs came out with that type of beat and feel during this era. Not a big deal to me.
One of those massively over-played songs on the radio you never got tired of listening to.
What a good memory..❤ Thank you!
Forgot all about this catchy song! Was in high school when this came out. Thanks for posting!
Sweet love song.♥️ Right to the point.🤗 Thanks guys.⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another one that is etched into my memory forever.❤
I was waiting for them to mention "What A Fool Believes." That was quick 🤣
Thanks!

This song came out before "I keep forgetting we are not in love ".
What A Fool Believes is my favorite song by the Doobie Brothers and this is a good song as well the 70s and 80s had good music for most part
Don't forget Michael Mc stole this vibe from Steely Dan, so the wheels go round n round. Venom is right about the lyrics. They are ABC like most hip hop.

It’s not until you hear it again now that it becomes clear how close the two songs are.
I liked this song, still do. It played a lot on the radio, but I liked it anyway…good song & band!👍🩵🩵🩵
Always loved this song! I`ve never gotten the connection to What A Fool Believes with it..of course I was young when I owned the record(still have the single)
I agree. There's about 4 parts where they break away from vocals that I notice a similar little beat, but it isn't very much.
I saw a few similarities , but it doesn’t compare to what a fool believes, thanks guys.
Now THIS could be called "Yacht Rock" if such a genre actually existed. You also should check out KEY LARGO by Bertie Higgins and ESCAPE (the Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes.
I love both songs!
This was 13 years earlier than What a Fool Believes.
And I'm not that enthralled by Michael Mcdonald. I'm old, I like the original sound of the Doobie Brothers.
2 years after actually
@@MadisonD941 he sound like a wolf in heat.
Um not even close. This came out after.
I don't really have a problem with Dupree "stealing away" the melody for this one, I enjoy both songs
WHOA!!!

I love this song, always have… I definitely LOVE the Doobies too lol 😝 Hot Rod Hearts is great too
Thought this was going to be a cover of the Jimmy Hughes song with the same name. Really need to check that one out, he’s a Muscle Shoals alum.
But he did have something else “Hot rod hearts”. Never mind yall addressed it. 👌
Fellas.... 🦅vs🪖
We won't let the Commies Steal Away the Super Bowl.
Redskins all the way

Dupree was heavily influenced by Michael McDonald-era Doobie Brothers.
Check out "Minute By Minute" since ya like Michael McDonald.
Love that song, it's really good.

The only thing I’m looking forward to in this video is to see how grumpy O will be with this track. 🤣

Now we know who the Fools are. Ha ha! Just kidding, y'all keep Rockin!

It’s a great song and if you put Michael McDonald’s voice in here, then it’s even better; you can clearly hear the Doobies
If he didn't get sued by the Doobie Bros, it's not a rip-off, in my opinion. The song also has attachment to my first serious relationship :)
Another song I forget about until I get on that elevator. 😆❤️✌️
I'm kinda bitchy today. Sorry! ❤
LMAO! Top Tier Comment!

Listen to: The Pioneer, Long Shot. The Specials, Monkey Man, concrete Jungle. The Wailers, Simmer Down.
Hot rod hearts
Guess we can not like country, hip-hop, metal songs that use similar structures in the songs.

Listen to 'Hot Rod Hearts'- better than this ☮

How is this a rip off of what a fool believes i don't make a connection.

Stole the rhythm section from the Doobie Brothers.
😕
an absolutely awful piece of pop drivel...!!!!
Wow...all these years I thought this was a Doobie Brothers song.
Yes he stole it away… but at least he got away with it
Why would you guys cover this cheesy PoS? Total crap.
