Bought a two pack of reports from them. No extra info beyond what you get in a VCHECK. Full of inaccuracies (it says the car is automatic, as an example). Contacted them to just be offered a free check in compensation. Not much I can use that on now I've already got a car
Glad to hear that you are cheesed off about this stuff too. Spending a few quid on a vehicle check is ALWAYS money well spent - and just as important when buying from a 'private' seller.
Actually a basic HPI check is free. Enter the reg on the 'sell your car page' at Autotrader. The number of previous owners is shown as well and a recommended private sale and PX price. This car cars up cat C but clear in the other categories. Then head over the the DVLA 'check MOT history' page and check though the cars history.
I got stung recently from a private seller. Ended up losing 2K on the car as I wasn’t aware the car had been written off. One of the most upsetting experiences in my life. I will now always do a HPI check. Huge lessons learnt

That badly fitting wing and the cracked seam sealer on the inner wing would have been my red flags but, as you say, not everyone is genned up on what to look for. Bought a Mini in 2012 having done an HPI check and was shocked, whilst trying to PX against a Golf six months later, that it was recorded as having been scrapped. When I contacted HPI they shrugged it off saying 'we can only report on info available at time of check', not our problem mate.

They don't actually print Cat C on the V5. Printed on the front page is this phrase, under special notes, "This vehicle has been salvaged because of structural damage, but it has been declared suitable for repair following a technical evaluation" Which I suppose makes it very obvious to an untrained eye.

As we all know, you're talking about Car Vertical. I recently bought a car and looked at them until I saw the price so I went elsewhere for a fraction of the price and it contained all the same info. As a general rule, if a TH-camr is doing paid advertising, it's generally a rubbish or overpriced product.
I completely agree with you that if a dealer is doing this then ethically you're under no obligation to protect their reputation when they're out there damaging the reputation of the trade in general. I also understand that you don't want bad blood locally - it's just difficult to balance that with not wanting more innocent people to be conned by them. I'd like to think I'd be naming and shaming, but I suspect I'd be doing pretty much what you are - arming the customer to fight back if they want to and not getting involved directly.

I've never understood the CV checks, way way overpriced and although I subscribe to some of those promoting it I feel they are being disloyal to their subscribers to make more of a profit from their advertising. I use an android app that shows everything that CV does and it costs £2.99. You go Joe, promote all honest messages it's the way to be buddy

I would suggest that this is a criminal offence. The Dealer has obtained a pecuniary advantage by deception if he was aware that this is a category car because he has deceived the customer into believing the vehicle was all good and not disclosed the write off status. Good that you are warning people to check the V5's !
If you are a private buyer I like the 'old school' approach. Never buy without seeing and driving the car first (not on a rainy day where paint issues can be invisible). While driving turn off everything and tell the sales rep to shut up so you can hear knocks and rattles, ensure you engage full right lock and full left lock in the test drive. Put your hand on the bonnet to ensure you are driving it from cold beforehand. Always pop the bonnet and boot and look for signs of damage repair (new paint, new welds). Check out panel gaps, uneven gaps point to damage repair.Take a magnet to check for filler in sills, wheel arches and wings. Get on the floor and shine a torch on the underside, look for rot or oil leaks. Ask to see service history (within reason, if it up for a grand accept that FSH is almost certainly not going to be available!). If all that checks out the chances are the vehicle is straight. The paid for check is the icing on the cake.

As a panel beater myself, I'd tell anyone. Im from brum, seen the whole lot. DO NOT BUY A WRITE OFF. Don't think there not full of 2.2 ohm resistors everywhere instead of airbags.. People overpay for them on copart and cut corners.. Usually have a hair cut aswell. Unless you've repaired it yourself don't bother.
Car Horizontal takes up alot of youtube vids...Motorcheck seems good value ... useful info , might explain.why facebook marketplace has some ads with number plates hidden. 👍

Such a shame there are dodgy people out there, who'd probably rip off their own grandma to make money, and unfortunately these kinds of people turn up in every profession, I got ripped off by a well know nationwide Opticians, ( their name relates to something you might put on your feet, or be part of a cars steering), they ended up making probably double what they should have by ripping me off, but in the long-term they have lost out because I'd never use them again. Let's hope word of mouth gets around about this dodgy car dealer, and he ends up not being able to shift any stock. Iirc even though the S is supposed to stand for "structural" it still operates much like the old system where the difference between C and D wasn't the type or extent of the damage but the cost of repair relative to the value of the car.
According to ABI if any welded on parts are damaged it's Cat S. So in reality some Cat S can be fairly minor damage, just outer panels or dents in sills etc 👍
there is a auction i go to and if a cat N car goes through you can ask people asking the auctioneer if its on the V5, i know for a fact one car went through recently which was a cat N went cheap and it's now on a dealers website at full retail price and no mention of it been a cat N. even if i'm very interested in a car for a dealer i always do a car check. there are plenty of honest car dealers and always some shady ones

Cat C is detailed on the V5, so the customer would be informed that it was Cat C on the paperwork. I’m guessing they didn’t check the paperwork when buying.
@@ShiftingMetalin Spain, a car has deeds like a house. The govt have an interest and you cannot buy/sell without this paperwork. The sale has to be completed by the equivalent of a solicitor. The govt has an interest if you die you pay inheritance check. But the paperwork is heavy for cars/ boats and u have to carry the documents at all times if stopped by the police. All the mot stations are govt run. No more dodgy mot testers. It so easy for anyone to be over awed by all this.
Useful tip on Motor Check. I don't want to pay to know if my prospective car was stolen in Latvia, etc....Would the buyers find out their car had a Cat rating when they came to insure it since on the register? FWIW Autolign can change the Cat rating on a damaged vehicle via HPI after a full inspection (£250/£325).
@@ShiftingMetal yes it does, alters statement on v5 as well, but repairs got to be to as new standard so it's not really viable, the average cat s, like your fiat, got no chance passing, another point is, if you end up in court, even if the claim is not related to the repair, you'll have no chance, happened to me, took 1400 quid for a cat c st170 a few years ago, said its cheap, as is, they basically couldn't afford the ins, I wouldn't refund, they had an inspection done, it ended up costing me 3 and a half by the time I got it back, it got transferred into a high court writ, tbh cat cars unless it's a megga cheapy aren't worth getting these days.

"Only with HPI will the status be changed which means the vehicle’s status will be changed from the Condition Alert register to the Condition Inspected register. If a search is completed on the vehicle’s history using the information other than from HPI, it will still show as a categorised vehicle".
@@roystonvehicles9129 To be honest the repair on that Fiat looks reasonable quality for a 12 year old car, from what we can see from the video. Before all the doom mongers wade in about repaired Categorised cars being death traps, when repaired properly they are as safe as any comparable undamaged car. Don't forget there are thousands of cars damaged every day and repaired by insurance companies, they are never categorised so don't show up on HPI or anywhere else. So chances are many of the people reading this are driving around in previously damaged cars and don't even know it. I have been repairing salvage cars myself for many years and always declare that fact when selling them though. It isn't fair to deliberately deceive buyers as you described in the video 👍
@@SalvageMasterEssex I have as well mate since the late 80s, tbh you could see a rust line round that inner wing, I bet its just been bashed out, I not against salvage but these days people are so dodgy repairing stuff, all I did rt thru the 90s was salvage, hbc and USA salvage (now Co part)

Personally I've always used Vehicle Smart - basic check is £2.99, advanced is £9.99 - it has everything you actually need.

I didn't know dealers are obliged to let you know a car is CATx - I always thought it was a case of "buyer beware".

HPI used to cost me £3 a go, 20/30 years ago. I used to give them £100 until it ran out. 5 for £20 sounds cheap.
if it gets in another accident the insurance will be reluctant to pay out. i found that out the hard way with a van when someone pulled out on me

@@ShiftingMetalin Spain, a car has deeds like a house. The govt have an interest and you cannot buy/sell without this paperwork. The sale has to be completed by the equivalent of a solicitor. The govt has an interest if you die you pay inheritance check. But the paperwork is heavy for cars/ boats and u have to carry the documents at all times if stopped by the police. All the mot stations are govt run. No more dodgy mot testers. It so easy for anyone to be over awed by all this.

Useful tip on Motor Check. I don't want to pay to know if my prospective car was stolen in Latvia, etc....Would the buyers find out their car had a Cat rating when they came to insure it since on the register? FWIW Autolign can change the Cat rating on a damaged vehicle via HPI after a full inspection (£250/£325).

@@ShiftingMetal yes it does, alters statement on v5 as well, but repairs got to be to as new standard so it's not really viable, the average cat s, like your fiat, got no chance passing, another point is, if you end up in court, even if the claim is not related to the repair, you'll have no chance, happened to me, took 1400 quid for a cat c st170 a few years ago, said its cheap, as is, they basically couldn't afford the ins, I wouldn't refund, they had an inspection done, it ended up costing me 3 and a half by the time I got it back, it got transferred into a high court writ, tbh cat cars unless it's a megga cheapy aren't worth getting these days.

"Only with HPI will the status be changed which means the vehicle’s status will be changed from the Condition Alert register to the Condition Inspected register. If a search is completed on the vehicle’s history using the information other than from HPI, it will still show as a categorised vehicle".
@@roystonvehicles9129 To be honest the repair on that Fiat looks reasonable quality for a 12 year old car, from what we can see from the video. Before all the doom mongers wade in about repaired Categorised cars being death traps, when repaired properly they are as safe as any comparable undamaged car. Don't forget there are thousands of cars damaged every day and repaired by insurance companies, they are never categorised so don't show up on HPI or anywhere else. So chances are many of the people reading this are driving around in previously damaged cars and don't even know it. I have been repairing salvage cars myself for many years and always declare that fact when selling them though. It isn't fair to deliberately deceive buyers as you described in the video 👍
@@SalvageMasterEssex I have as well mate since the late 80s, tbh you could see a rust line round that inner wing, I bet its just been bashed out, I not against salvage but these days people are so dodgy repairing stuff, all I did rt thru the 90s was salvage, hbc and USA salvage (now Co part)
