Not to be a safety Sally or anything (I do the same thing) but probably not the best idea to do a demonstration without the guard on. Especially with the cut off disks. Those can shatter and fly right at you at that speed and do a ton of damage. Great work though. Sorry if it sounds negative, Was not meant to be.......
Beat me to it Magilla. Having a thick grinding wheel on is one thing without the guard, but do it enough and eventually one of those thin cutting disks is going to come apart on you and you'll wish you had that guard on. Even with the guard on I almost had a nipplectomy one time. Getting hit with a shattered disk at a couple of thousand rpm's is not a pleasant thing.
When you're cutting, throw the sparks back at you, and stand offset so you don't set your clothes on fire. You have more control over the grinder and if it catches it will pull away from you, not toward you. It's not a bad idea to wear a protective face guard too. Those thin cutting blades are brittle and can shatter if they catch. Sweet homemade cleaver. I wanna make one now. Thanks for sharing doing stuff with basic tools.
Carolina Chris Outdoors Thanks. Yep, planning to test harden a couple pieces in oil and water, see if it works. Then I’ll quench this one if I get good results. Might do a video on it.
I save this to my United We Stand TH-camrs playlist I look forward to hearing from you thanks for sharing keep up the great work God bless bye for now can
There's a lesson I learned Carpenters know metal Which is a lesson I learned Because of the tools that my grandpa possesses I love that the cards are tipped in my favour
Neat video! Although I would have to disagree with you when you said that your knife wouldn’t be able to slice paper or be razor sharp. I have gotten some mystery steels up to a hair popping sharpness, however, if you look at it funny, it will loose that edge. You made the right decision with grinding the bevel nice and thick. There’s nothing wrong with practicing on scrap steel, hope you learned something and improved your knifemaking skills on this project!
pyrotech1999 Thanks! Based on the bursting sparks I saw while grinding I’m thinking this might be at the high end of low carbon steels. Might test harden a couple pieces and if it works I’ll do this Knife next. I’d definitely re-profile that edge though. Might make an interesting video.
well, I almost lost a finger cutting with that type of tool , and without using protection, that was my hesitation ! So, what did I learn using this type of power tool ? me instead of pushing them forward, throwing the sparks forward , I pull her to my side throwing the spark at me ,This is not a crazy idea, if you get used to it ! you've gotten used to cutting it that way, but if you chop it off your side, you got rid of the tool locking up , and will not run the risk of the disk crashing and injuring itself !!! Sorry if my English was not very good, I do not speak English very very well okay ! but it is advice from a friend over 30 years of experience !!! Take care of yourself buddy ! Good job, great knife !
Harry jnr Thanks! Yep, I’m kind of surprised more people don’t use it. Cheap, easy to apply and remove, makes a comfortable handle with sure grip. Definitely not the prettiest handle material though. 😂
Yes you can harden mild steel ( channel iron aka structural steel ) heat and oil quench, then case harden in an oven at 400-425° for an hour then let air cool . You'd be pleasantly surprised I believe.
Yeah I am sort of a beginning knifemaker the only tools I have available to me or a Dremel tool at angle grinder and a small but I still get the job done I have made at least 20 swords
That's a fine looking chopper you made. I wonder if it would be able to be hardened and tempered? But then again it seems to be working great as is. Cool video.
Maybe you can make the national guard knife next from saints and sinners It’s a really cool knife, also look at pictures if you haven’t heard of it I would love to see that ❤️
I really hope you put a guard on your grinder in the future if nothing else than to teach children the proper way to use this tool... and yes, plenty of children and young adults watch these types of videos. As a former welder and fabricator, I've done my fair share of dumb things with tools and usually you end up learning the hard way. I've had those grinders jump so hard that no regular person would be able to control it. In my years metal working I saw lots of blood drawn with these and much worse, lost teeth and fingers. I worked with tons of different dangerous tools in my life but these hand held high speed grinders are near the top.
I reckon you could chop down a small to medium tree with that thing. Do the grinding disks wear away to nothing like the cutting ones or do they just go dull?
From my experience: slightly. I have been using the same grinding disk for about 3-4 years (since I got my first angle grinder) and it has not weathered away very much. However, that might have something to do with the wheel being clogged with soft metal and other debris. The disk still hacks away at metal, but I’ll mainly only use it to refine the shape of a blade, or remove scale/burrs.
pyrotech1999, That's a long time if you use it regularly. I wonder if you grind into a dressing stone or stick (for bench grinder) if it will freshen it up again.
alex rentz, Have you tried a dressing stick or wheel for bench grinders on it? I wonder if that would work. I have some projects coming up so if mine starts getting clogged or dull I might try it.
This comment may be old but that steel has some high carbon sparks (lots of sparks and they are flowering at the ends) although the metal has not rusted much but as i said always look at the sparks
FargoFX I have made a Bowie and two kukris out of leaf springs I only been making knife's for two years as a hobby when ever I get extra time like your videos
MY SS MEAT CLEAVER IS SHARPER THAN A RAZOR > No i don't play with it, hit some thing its going threw it! Even hard washing the blade with out getting cut! Use washing down stoke from the edge! > NEVER BACK AND FORTH OR SIDE WAYS its aways sharp and ready> Meat Cleaver is my favorite ! i take it over ANY THING THAT CUTS!
Dremel does well for tight areas-just don't want to have to use it for extended periods as it will get tiring being slower. Need to get me an agnle grinder-using one of my circular saws with metal cutting blade [[bst I can do ATM]] but it tends to meet unevenly/hard to see where the cut is going from point A to B. Why not use that cleaver as a Cleaver? Chippin' up chicken and veggies and such rather than wood?
YES. ITS GREAT PRACTICE.... BUT FOR ACTUAL USE, IT WOULD NOT BE ADVISED. THEY CANT BE HEAT TREATED TO HRC HARDNESS RATING - SO CANT HOLD OR RETAIN AN EDGE. PLUS, THEY RUST LITERALLY IN MINUTES OF COMING IN CONTACT WITH WATER, IF NOT WIPED OFF IMMEDIATELY.
Tomaso Scalzo I like that idea. Need to build my gas forge soon. Charcoal just doesn’t get hot enough for forge-welding and I can’t get proper coal in my area.
Alex Mann I believe you’re right. I tested a piece by quenching in water later and it definitely hardened the steel. I thought this was “A36” steel which is listed at .29% I think? But this piece might have been a bit carbon rich.
You are getting that binding up cause your grinder should turned the opposite direction and pulled into the cut . Just step away from the sparks and cut that s.o.bim just saying
No guard on the angle grinder? The guard is not there as a spark deflector, it for when that wheel explodes in your face as it catches in the kerf. Hope you have a full face shield on... th-cam.com/video/eJOiKuVeXA0/w-d-xo.html
Holding the grinder wrong. Motor side of the grinder needs to be on the right side. Your kickback is coming towards you. And you should keep the guard on. Sorry. ....... but rethink the use of your tool.

Magilla7395 You are 100% correct! I am pinning your reply at the top. I’ve had cutting discs fly apart on me before-VERY dangerous.
Agreed!! I am guilty of the same thing myself but definitely a risk especially with those thin cutting disks! :)
i loved the safety boots too ;'D

Nice Video!
Might as well try to harden it later on, just for the heck of it. That is a good looking chopper!
Carolina Chris Outdoors Thanks. Yep, planning to test harden a couple pieces in oil and water, see if it works. Then I’ll quench this one if I get good results. Might do a video on it.
Agreed!
His voice is so relaxing

You have a great narrator voice man
Hey when i use a grinder i use it with the sparks ALWAYS towards me so when the disc catches it goes away and not toward me
wear a fire proof apron, won't have to worry about it
Also a tip for wrapping, look up irish hurling grip tape, its cushioned, water proof and cheap!,

I like the emphasis on safety, for a practice blade, its very good looking. Keep up the good work! Subscribed!
Excellent job!
Nice working

Very nice, that hockey tape is great stuff and will last a long time on the handle, nice idea

You are amazing and you got a new subscriber.
I built something similar out of a old brush hog blade i found use it like a hatchet
Yes you can harden mild steel ( channel iron aka structural steel ) heat and oil quench, then case harden in an oven at 400-425° for an hour then let air cool . You'd be pleasantly surprised I believe.
Looked awesome I thought it would get dull real fast keep it up
Thanks, my friend!
FargoFX :)
Yeah I am sort of a beginning knifemaker the only tools I have available to me or a Dremel tool at angle grinder and a small but I still get the job done I have made at least 20 swords
Looking at the sparks flying it looks like it may be hardenable
nice work
HNIZAR45 Thanks!
Awesome

That's a fine looking chopper you made. I wonder if it would be able to be hardened and tempered? But then again it seems to be working great as is. Cool video.
Nick Miller Good question, I’m actually in the process of test-hardening some leftovers from that project. Might have a video coming soon.
Maybe you can make the national guard knife next from saints and sinners
It’s a really cool knife, also look at pictures if you haven’t heard of it
I would love to see that ❤️
Check out rescue (silicon) tape. I've wrapped a kukri and a parang with it that lasted ten years easy, and I cut down a few trees with them

Muito bom! Very good, what's this steels is that? I understand a little inglish
If is a 1070 steel,1095 steel...
@@darleychumbo1899 ITS MILD STEEL. SO CLOSER TO 1018.
@@darleychumbo1899
AÇO LEVE... HOPE THAT HELPS.
Thanks! Good job man! 👍🏾
@@theoutpost969 it is not a mild steel. the spark tell it got some good amount of carbon to be hardenable

Yup, I’ve hade the same experience as these guys. I don’t do all that much grinding, but my old discs seem to last forever.
pyrotech1999, That's a long time if you use it regularly. I wonder if you grind into a dressing stone or stick (for bench grinder) if it will freshen it up again.

Of course it's properly harden , it's an angle iron.
This comment may be old but that steel has some high carbon sparks (lots of sparks and they are flowering at the ends) although the metal has not rusted much but as i said always look at the sparks
You should try leaf springs from older model cars late to mid 90
Donnie Johns Great idea, I know a lot of them were 5160 spring steel and supposed to make superior blades.
FargoFX I have made a Bowie and two kukris out of leaf springs I only been making knife's for two years as a hobby when ever I get extra time like your videos
reminds me of my Rambo Machete

Nice build simple and coool is that a o tooo much ooo. lol thumbs up guy
I have made a Ninjato the same way, and it is functional! It scares the shit out of unpleasant people.
Could you make a kitchen knife from mild steel I'm new to this world and only have access to steel from local hardware stores
Yeah how I normally put an edge on a blade is I would rub it in with an angle grinder then Smoove it out with a sander
Byy krna hyy ye
I have a long piece of steel like that and i am going to make a decorative katana out of it
is that matrix music at the end?
You Know it’s from TH-cam’s free to use selections. Has a Matrixy sound though.
wau.....
Try forging a folded axe with that steel but maybe you should also forge weld a piece of carbon steel on the edge
Tomaso Scalzo I like that idea. Need to build my gas forge soon. Charcoal just doesn’t get hot enough for forge-welding and I can’t get proper coal in my area.
+Tomaso Scalzo
in nowadays we can simply arc weld carbon steel on the edge --- which work much fine than forge weld
👍👍👍
Who uses a grinder like that? You used it upside down 🤦🏽♂️
You should flip the grinder around then it won't catch just saying
Mate get some boots on
Not sure I like your choice in FOOTWEAR in a shop setting.
الحديد لا يضرب و هو بارد.
So, you are making an axe in the form of a cleaver instead of a " cleaver knife"?
these type of steel contain 0.3-0.5 % carbon --- enough to tempering the blade.
Alex Mann I believe you’re right. I tested a piece by quenching in water later and it definitely hardened the steel. I thought this was “A36” steel which is listed at .29% I think? But this piece might have been a bit carbon rich.
