Love it! This is the first time I have come across a tie dye project that is thoroughly described by someone who is actually well experienced in what he is talking about. I am a dyer and I salute you for a great tutorial and the generosity to share it. Live long and prosper ;-)
You're like the Bob Ross of tie dye, and I love you. Seriously your voice is like so soothing. I love you so much !!!!!! Thank you for putting your time into this channel:)))
that is the best tie dye video I have ever seen and the most beautiful tie die shirt I have ever seen. I am going to try that. keep up with your video they are great (greetings from Paris🙋)
You’re not only amazing at tie dye you are an excellent teacher. Xplaining clearly and concisely what’s important and why. Thanks for sharing your skill. 🤙
Where does one get the products you are using in the jars? I would love to know names or where to get it. The colors are so good!! 💜 really cool work 😎
Found you on ATTD. Man You are on a level which I am not. I don't know but one other person in my town that tie dyes and they are still a baby too. This video helped my technique significantly seeing the surface you work on, and the way you shaped it to keep it flat. Subcribe!
Much thanks fellow duden. I didn't know Addicted to Tie Dye was still going on, FB group or website? Glad this wound up there regardless. And yeah, if you can help it-- always glass.
The FB group is going strong brother. you are in the files under snow and ice dying. So many greeat artists on there but few show as much techniques in their tuts, usually just generalizations. Which I understand. Its hard to give away what youve had to put so much into. but I sure appreciate it. We are working on buying a slab or finding a window abandoned somewhere. haha
Question; and your video is great by the way- it is not a just add water type of tutotorial and I respect that, but what about flimsy fabrics such as for bathing suits? They can be given evenness to both sides, though I am guessing it's tricky to do so with less to work with ( say for a two piece.) And pointers for enthusiastic beginners ? I had a thought that carcinogenic does or does not account heavily for the kid- sized kits, but that's also a second question ..Thanks if you can answer them. Don't want to be reckless with a first attempt..Hope that it's no trouble to ask this in the comments below!
You were the first person a few years ago I watched, you are the BEST teacher..you soothing, no music, I love watching you. Wish we could of seen end result. I bought lots of stuff a few years ago to try this..because of you. I also like seeing designs of reverse dye.. Do you do reverse dye teaching?
Great videos, very clear instructions. Thank you for SHARING your talent!! and your ART!! This is how more people can enjoy the process and discover that they too, are artists :)
I love your tutorial! You explain everything so clear and understandable, i really want to try this :) when you wanted to paint the second side of the shirt, you added soda ash. Do you have to do that too on the first side? And the dye you use, is it the fiber reactive dye? I have jars of fiber reactive dye powder, and when i create a solution for my tie dying, i add salt to the solution. Is salt also needed in this process?
The shirt is initially soaked in ash because it helps the dye adhere and retain brightness. By melting the ice on the bottom side it kind of activates the ash. The second coat is to make sure the dye takes just as well.
Dyer soap? How do you spell it, where can I buy it and does it do something better than regular detergent cold washing machine? Thanks for the Awesome video series...VERY NICE TECHNIQUE.
Now I know what to do with the shirts my daughter permanently stains. Excellent!!! Are the tie dye kits from craft stores garbage? What brands do you recommend? I might have my daughter make one for her teacher with her favorite colors as a Last Day Of Kindergarten present.
I'd definitely avoid the craft store kits. Most dyers in North America (including myself) use Dharma Trading Co online, but there's a few other good out there too if you just search for a dye wholesaler. Merry colorful adventures~*
Hey Crispy, im new and interested in learning about ice dyeing and all and i was wondering where you got all of your powders and how much they cost? Cuz wherever i go, i always find small boxes versus the giant ones you have
What would you say is a minimum number of dyes to get a good effect? Maybe as a number of darker dyes (could you just get away with black/grey?) and of brighter dyes
Hey man so if I took the powdered dye and soda ash mixture from a tulip kit and used that instead of the one you used, all it would do would be make it less vibrant?
Nice I love your patterns I'm start one I just made 5 dyi tie dye shirts of my own from watching yours I never use to use black til today I use a bucket method lol a mop buckets works great with em
Thank you! And could you please confirm that you were using Procion Powder from Dharma Trading? (It was mentioned in the posts below.) Would you recommend doing ice TD with liquid dye? Many thanks again, You have a great way of explaining TD process, please post more on this subject!
Hi! I understand you use Procion MX dye is there another kind of dye I could use instead, any recommendations? Like are there any you could pick up at walmart?
I can only really recommend Procion for this method, as I haven't used other types. There are Tulip (brand) and other such kits at places like walmart, and while lots are even Procion, they tend to be very faded, and also don't seem to hold to shirts very well. So if it's really you're only option, then sure, try it; but if you have a craft store in your town then chances are they have the good stuff, and there's a thousand places online too, so I truly recommend one of those avenues instead.
Do you mind telling me where I can find/what dye is good but also cheep enough? Or even what you soak your shirts in? Or something to keep the color bright? I make tie dye shirts all the time but they always loose there color ;(
+savannah 937 If they lose their colour, then you're probably not using Soda Ash, which is essential. Also, don't use dye kits from places like Walmart. A great place is Dharma Trading Company, and if you use their search bar you can find complete tie dye kits with everything you'll need.
Crispy Thanks!!! that helps out a lot and no i dot use soda ash just because i have never used it and really didn't know it existed... I'm late to the parade
I agree your voice is very calming. I'm high and I could listen to you talk for hours. Super relaxing. Also what's that white powder called again? Soda hash?
Could you clarify the statement regarding the sides to be done first. You started this with the front up I believe, which was contrary to your dialogue.
Question: was your shirt pre-soaked in soda ash and then dried? I realize you added more soda ash on the back side...your shirt just looked so nice and dry and crisp....
It was soaked in soda ash for an hour, then run through the spin cycle of a washing machine-- This takes out most of the moisture while still maintaining the PH from the soak. Makes colours more vibrant 8)
That's Soda Ash I'm sprinkling on it. The shirt was also soaked in a Soda Ash solution before the video began. This, along with thin ice cubes, will help the colours come out brighter.
Katarzyna Szczotka Not exactly. Soda ash acts as a fixative that chemically bonds the dye to the fabric. It's necessary when using procion dyes, or most will just come out in the wash.
LoreenSDH The *New* hippie shit 8) And they should still call it Procion MX Dye. Just search online or check art stores. It's the standard for tie dye.
Hey dude I've been experimenting with this technique and the biggest problem I'm having is that I put on the ice and the dye as you suggest, but as the ice melts, most of the dye goes all the way through the shirt onto the other side. I'm really using a minimal amount of ice so I don't get why it's going all the way through so easily. The only thing I thought it could be is the temperature, since it's summer here I think the ice melts faster outside. Would this sort of thing be reduced by melting the ice indoors at room temperature?
AllersSokol Depending on the temperature, that could be a good fix for you... though I do it here in the summer (30-40 C) and find it works. Probably the best thing to do is watch the shirts, check up on them as the ice melts, and find a way to look at the underside (use a grated surface). When you see it gets to the point where the dye is starting to appear on the underside, but there's still some white left, then remove whatever ice is left and flip it. ~*
Crispy, amazing technique. I am trying it for the first time and i kind of checked my shirt before going out, realized that it was near soaking through to the other side but on the top there was still all these crevices with white, and a lot of shirt undyed. So i just scraped 85 percent of the ice and left some on. When i came back the dye had soaked through the whole shirt, leaving some white in between where it had been crimped. My question is, is it still ok to attempt to put dye on the other side and see what happens, or do you through in the towel and just call the shirt done. Thanks a lot for any reply.@@CrispyGuy
nisamsmradjasammaca not sodium bicarbonate, that's baking soda if I'm not mistaken. soda ash gets a very soapy texture when mixed with water, also called washing soda (sodium carbonate)

Agreed
"won't create a permanent death." Good to know. Permanent death can be a bummer, but those temp deaths are the bomb.
HAHAHAH! soon as he said it i laughed and went to the comments
@@janinelarkin7891 me too 😂
"A permanent death", oh whew I was worried I might have gotten a temporary one lmao
Joshua Nicholas Lol i thought the same thing. As opposed to a temporary one??😁
listen it happens to us tie dye folks from time to time
That permanent death is the worst sort.
This is what I came for..hehe
You’re not only amazing at tie dye you are an excellent teacher. Xplaining clearly and concisely what’s important and why. Thanks for sharing your skill. 🤙
this is some crazy method. thank you so much for sharing it. i know you've gone through so many tries and fails to come to this. thank you so much:))
I have searched endlessly to find you again an now I've found this. Ty ty ty
Of all the tie dye patterns, this is the one I find the most exciting.
Going off your voice, you could totally be Jesse Eisenberg under that sick tie dye
I've been found out! o.O
going off your voice you could totally be sabrina the teenage witch under that sweet rabbit suit

The greatest tie dye explanations and tips i have seen!! Thank you so much!!
@crispy how important is the synthrapol or dyers soap? and Im assuming with cold water? Thanks again this video is absolutely great
Hi. May i ask why we need to use soda ash? Am newbie in tie dye. Thanks a bunch for this wonderful tutorial
Excuse me, what are the type of your names for your Dye powders from this video a long time. And what are the names??.
Such a great, thorough teacher thank you for this thoughtful video!

very nice I like that.. thanks Appreciate if you kindly advice the name and specs of these colours and thanks once again
Very Very COOL my friend thank you for your videos. You are surely a talented artist!
I’m so curious, could one achieve a similar effect with bleach?
Think I’ll try and find out👍
Thanks for your time🖖
Did you try with bleach? Did it work?
I love your voice so much and your vocabulary. :)

+David Gilmer And much thanks right back at you my most-of-a-Floydian-guitar-legend friend.
Love you videos, what kind of rack are you using? I'm new at this and have been using kitchen cooling rack and they're small.
It's a laundry-drying rack folded up
Great videos, very clear instructions. Thank you for SHARING your talent!! and your ART!! This is how more people can enjoy the process and discover that they too, are artists :)
Hola 👋 genial genial, oye como consigo la pintura 🎨 cual es su nombre, gracias 👌 gran trabajo buena vibra

What is the name for the Black, Blue, and Grey colors of Jars??
Your voice reminds me of Reed from Criminal Minds.... lol.
Nokomis F. - OMG, yes he does sound like Reed.
Dyer soap? How do you spell it, where can I buy it and does it do something better than regular detergent cold washing machine? Thanks for the Awesome video series...VERY NICE TECHNIQUE.
itscousins The proper name is Synthrapol. You can usually get it where you can buy dyes or quilting supplies, or at very many places online.
Thank you very much for this tutorial. Could you please let me know what is the white powder you used before dying the back side?
Thank you!
Sure thing, it's soda ash.
You are a perfectionist... I love the results...I love the process...love it!
Hey Crispy, im new and interested in learning about ice dyeing and all and i was wondering where you got all of your powders and how much they cost? Cuz wherever i go, i always find small boxes versus the giant ones you have
+Brandon Burns Dharma Trading Co. my friend.
Your voice is like heaven.
Awesome tutorial. What would be the difference in the final product if you put the powdered dye on first and the ice over it?
The dye would still spread from the ice, but not as much-- so it will be stronger colours with less of a gradient.
Hermano qué clase o marca de pigmentos utilizás ? Gracias
What would you say is a minimum number of dyes to get a good effect? Maybe as a number of darker dyes (could you just get away with black/grey?) and of brighter dyes
Would crushed ice be better or does it have to be the bigger ice for the type of pattern?
Both work well. Bigger the ice, bigger the "bubbles" of colour, but any ice at all will give a beautiful texture and gradient.
where do you get your powder dye from? I can't find it anywhere ;) btw great video :D
I order it online from Dharma Trading Co.
What kind of paint(powder) do you use? Can this be done with Dylon dye ( from Europe) as well? Or Procion dye which is rather expensive ?
Hey man so if I took the powdered dye and soda ash mixture from a tulip kit and used that instead of the one you used, all it would do would be make it less vibrant?
Thank you so much for sharing. My ice dye is marinating this very moment. Why do you turn the shirt inside out?
Nice I love your patterns I'm start one I just made 5 dyi tie dye shirts of my own from watching yours I never use to use black til today I use a bucket method lol a mop buckets works great with em
Oooo mop bucket with the squeezer..good tip!
Great video, thank you for sharing your talent! Im excited to try this out!
Beautiful art, man! Would RIT be ok to use?
can you do this method alongside a regular method, perhaps to make a background for the pattern i'm making?
Very nice!
But how to make a yellow shirt, the shirt in he dressed in video. which colors to use?
Nevena Lazarevic Side 1: Black, Gray, Brown ..... Side 2: Yellow, Peach, light dustings of Green
Do you have a online store where I could purchase a shirt? If so, I would love to get one. :)
Where do you recommend I get the powdered dye??
Thank you! And could you please confirm that you were using Procion Powder from Dharma Trading? (It was mentioned in the posts below.)
Would you recommend doing ice TD with liquid dye?
Many thanks again, You have a great way of explaining TD process, please post more on this subject!
Confirmed on the dyes.
And I wouldn't put liquid dye over ice-- too much water. You can do ice on one side and liquid on the other though.
Hi! I understand you use Procion MX dye is there another kind of dye I could use instead, any recommendations? Like are there any you could pick up at walmart?

thank you for sharing your secrets.
such a great lesson, pro at work.
thanks man
Fantastic, very beautiful!!! "CONGRATULATIONS"
Awesome. What kind of dye are you using?
Procion dyes from Dharma Trading Co.
I made one of these shirts...wish I could send you a photo!

I agree your voice is very calming. I'm high and I could listen to you talk for hours. Super relaxing. Also what's that white powder called again? Soda hash?
Hahaha, if only. It's called sodium carbonate, or soda ash.
This was the perfect tutorial, thanks!
I would've loved to see the finished product
Can you use normal liquid die instead of the powder for this pattern?
Hi Crispy. Can you share more of this technic in Tie Dye'ing :) Please thanks I love psychedelic. You're so Great and Creative man 👌🏼🙏🏻
what is the brand of the colour powders?? or what substance do you use?
Do you sell your shirts?I would like one like the one you have on in this video
Super cool method. doing this tomorrow!!! Will doing it in the sun so the ice melts faster be bad
Do u have a link where we can buy the dye in bulk please.😁
youre tutorials are fantastic!!!
Definitely not possible to use liquid dye for this? Looks really good.
Awesome work!
What is that white powder you put when you flip over the shirt?
Hi , where can i buy the die powder from ? Thanx
So is your ice layer about 1× the thickness of your shirt?
Could you clarify the statement regarding the sides to be done first.
You started this with the front up I believe, which was contrary to your dialogue.
Michael Claffy Sure thing, you want the backside of the shirt facing up first to do the dark half.
@@CrispyGuy How can the back side be done first when you folded it on it's side, the back and front are present on each side?
Question: was your shirt pre-soaked in soda ash and then dried? I realize you added more soda ash on the back side...your shirt just looked so nice and dry and crisp....
It was soaked in soda ash for an hour, then run through the spin cycle of a washing machine-- This takes out most of the moisture while still maintaining the PH from the soak. Makes colours more vibrant 8)
+Crispy Thanks for taking the time to get back to me! You've got a great spirit...and it shows in your work! Huzzah!
What would happen if you used the folding technique, and used dark on back and light on front, but used liquid and no ice?
Sorry I couldn't hear what you were putting on after the ice was melted?
cool tutorial. great style.
thanks for making it!
how long should you wait till you flip the ice off and do the other side?
Maegan Rhodes You flip it when the ice is melted, unless you see the dye is going to seep all the way through, then you flip it before that happens.
where do you get your dyes? im looking for big jugs and cant seem to find any sites
I get mine in powder form from Dharma Trading Co.
What was the white powder he put on it when he flipped it before he put the dye on
Thank you. Love your videos!
What do you use in 5:40 min? This is a salt? What to do to dye was stable and not faded? Great t-shirt, very inspiring
That's Soda Ash I'm sprinkling on it. The shirt was also soaked in a Soda Ash solution before the video began. This, along with thin ice cubes, will help the colours come out brighter.
Crispy Does soda ash prolongs the lifetime of the dye?
Katarzyna Szczotka Not exactly. Soda ash acts as a fixative that chemically bonds the dye to the fabric. It's necessary when using procion dyes, or most will just come out in the wash.
Awesome shirt. Beautiful
I love it, real hippie shit!
But i live in the netherlands how do they call that colored powder here you think...

Tfs. What dyes do you use?
So beautiful love your shirt that one you got onis cool
Why powder? I have DYLON powder to be made a liquid as it was all I could find easily in a shop here in England. How does liquid vs powder work?
The poweder will be watered down by the ice melting, adding water before too will water the colours down so they come out faded. ~*
ive been looking for an easy way to earn extra money. thanks dude.
the what ash? first time I see this method and have no idea what that white powder is supposed to be.can you explain?
Soda ash, it's a necessary fixative so that the dye doesn't just run out when you wash it.
+Crispy so just sodium bicarbonate? awesome thanks
nisamsmradjasammaca not sodium bicarbonate, that's baking soda if I'm not mistaken. soda ash gets a very soapy texture when mixed with water, also called washing soda (sodium carbonate)

can I make it with liquid colors?
