    The real world comparison to to this test is for you to walk out of a refrigerator and jump into a frozen lake wearing Goretex. Both technologies compared to Goretex rely on body heat to open the pores of the jacket, so water vapor can pass through.
    If you had asked the volunteers to warm up there hands in room temperature air, instead of chilling it in ice water, before putting on the glove, then exercise the hand in cold air, instead of ice water, the results would have been the opposite.
    The results would have more accurately reflected real world situations, as well - like putting on a jacket at a normal air temperature, then being active in it at a cold air temperature.
    First, by chilling the volunteers hand, and second, by making sure the inside glove temperature was extremely low using an ice water bath, you deactivated the technologies used by the competing brands in a very unrealistic manner. Furthermore, by chilling the volunteers hands and the internal glove environment, you concealed Goretex's main flaw: it does not transfer water vapor or heat fast enough to be effective while active.

      Great feedback. I will see if I can get some sample gloves and try it in the conditions that you have presented.

      Exactly, those tests are bs. I've got both gore tex snowboard pants and sympatex 45k snb bibs. Sympatex is soooo much better in every single aspect than any gortex gear that i own.

    When in contact with the water you're also testing the thickness/insulation of the fabric and also if the gloves are not identical air pockets affect the test.

      Good call. The glove shape and size and cut were identical. It was just the material itself not laminated to any type of outerwear... Straight waterproof membrane. I thought it was a pretty good representation. Pretty eye opening really.

    I have owned a couple of very expensive Gore Tex Jackets. Their very waterproff when new but if you have to clean it or even wipe a mark off with soapy water , the water repellent always disappears leaving the jacket completely useless against rain etc. I always have to spray something like Scothguard over it to make it waterproof again. You could make a cheap rain jacket just as water repellent by spraying it with a water repellent spray. Gore tex is very overrated in my experience. The emperors new clothes.

    • @manybikes
      @manybikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, thanks for sharing! I’ve had the opposite experience and goretex has a lifetime warranty

      You clearly have noe clue how the membranes work. What you are talking about is the repellant of the outer fabric,not the waterproofness of the membrane. Gore-Tex will stay waterproof unless damaged and has nothing to do with the repellant. The repellant treatment is there to make sure the outer fabric does not soke through, so that breathability will still function.

    What model Sympatex is this? Cause the claims of their new range 'Sympatex Performance' are 45k waterproofing and 30k breathability, which SHOULD be greater than Gore-Tex however your tests clearly suggest otherwise?!

    • @manybikes
      @manybikes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mitchell Wright This was standard Sympatex and standard Gore-Tex. The Sympatex Performance and the Gore-Tex Pro (30% more breathable than standard Gore-Tex) will be similar. I’d love to get samples of each of those to test! - Kyle

    • @jamesmullen75
      @jamesmullen75 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is test isn’t real world and is designed to remove the mechanism of function Sympatex uses to allow water vapor to pass through the one side.. and that’s body heat. The pre-chilling of the hands is the giveaway here.

    So I'm confused if breathability is so vital what makes the Enduro S4 better than other rain jackets to go over a Baja S4?

    • @manybikes

      Nathan Willis the Scholer waterproof 4 way stretch fabric is wind proof and breathable while bring 100% waterproof. It was used over goretex for the stretch-ability factors. Max Comfort was the end goal.

    Gore-Tex is great stuff, although for the money I'd buy an American-made Aerostich jacket instead of a China-made Klim.

      What’s up Dan! Most of the Klim stuff is in Bangladesh & Thailand actually... not much from China these days... That being said, Stitch and Motoport are both great USA made riding apparel companies.

So not all goretex is waterproof. make sure you understand the difference Water resistant vs. waterproof. waterproof vs. water repellent.
