H1B is not the problem, the problem is that most companies using H1B misuse and abuse it. They want cheaper labor force that does not need any training and won’t complain about mistreatment. For that reason they create ridiculously specific job requirements to artificially limit the pool of candidates. They say people here lack the skills, but those skills often could only be learned on the job and companies do not want to train. Do not remove H1B, create and enforce stricter rules for giving those out. And regarding the medicine, I think we need to invest in subsidizing the medical degrees to make more doctors. The more doctors there are, the cheaper it would be to get their services, the more people would be able to get help. It’s better to have a familiar local doctor to go to same day than to wait months in line for a doctor inside a hospital who doesn’t know you and doesn’t care.

Bernie's correct about H1-B workers. I met many in my career in IT. They are massively underpaid and employers use the H1-B regulations to have leverage over them.
They are underpaid becoz of so many layer ..the billing is same just there are so many layer which undercut the money .. employee get lesser amount.. h1b visa should not sponsored by employee it has to be given individual who can decide where to work
The really stupid thing about using H1B to lower wages is that the type of jobs being done are ones where you need your employees to be rested, calm and focused to do. It doesn't matter how much money you are saving on their wages if they can't focus on the work they are doing as they are being worked 12h days and constantly under the fear of being deported. IT workers (like all other intellectual work) are significantly better value if they aren't stressed out, the ELT and the E Suite of the companies are doing everything in their power to make sure that only Chinese technology companies exist
Not just in IT. It's the same in academia, it's like bringing in modern day slaves. Depending on which institution and lab you're in, there are some serious abuses going on. From the researchers' point of view, grant money is hard to come by and salaries eat up a huge chunk of it, leaving little for the actual research, hence a lot of pressure to keep salaries low.
Absolutely right about bringing in cheap labour for IT jobs. Our kids go to school and pay a lot for their educations, not to see their potential jobs going to foreign workers. These tech companies are making a boatload of money. They can afford to pay American workers decent wages. Great job, Bernie!
Big corporations in many sectors, are abusing H1B visa employees, rather than paying the prevailing wage for domestic workers. It's definitely happening in healthcare fields.
@@eahemming If an American is fit enough to get into a tech job they need not fear an H1B. A sundar pichai and NAdella are both H1Bs. You think they undercut Americans.
I am a US born American working as an engineer at one of the largest semiconductor companies in the country. I often find myself a minority to my Indian colleagues. These people are often looking to become US citizenship, and the path to citizenship right now is extremely brutal and agonizing. In a nation built on immigrants, including my own ancestors and the ancestors of almost everyone here, we should be making it easier for these people to join us in the American journey. If there is a pay gap, we need to address that. These people deserve a fair wage and shouldn't be used as cheap labor. (Which I don't know that my employer does) I think it's important that we do make the H1-B process and the path to citizenship easier. I should also note that, at least in my industry, it is known that foreign employees generally need a master's degree to get the same job as a domestic candidate with only a bachelor's degree. Per the amendment, I think making the visa portable and preventing employers to strip that visa is REALLY important and I love that. As well as trying to ensure fair wages. But I think ensuring fair wages is enough and penalizing companies for hiring foreign workers directly is xenophobic, something that we should not stand for.
Seems you did not get the message: - Hiring foreign workers for low wages undercut the american workers bargaining power for jobs and wages. - There is no deficiency in skilled and educated people, and foreign workers are not required for technological advancemnet (as Musk has implied). These are largely proven as faulty assumptions when looking at who gets the visas - a wide range of labour that easily could have been filled by americans instead. The question, and fear of, xenophobia should be irrelevant for this issue. And yet xenophobia becomes an issue, because the irrational angst of being xenophobic prevents the left from taking the reins in this issue and treating it as a purely socio-economical problem. What then has happened is that people are more easily persuaded by the actual xenophobes, because they dare speak of it as an issue.
@martinb4272 I think that removing the wage gap between foreigner and domestic employees would be enough to alleviate the undercutting issue. It'd also be more fair for H1B workers who currently are not treated well by the system. My point isn't to defend Musk or anyone else in the oligarchy. I may agree with them on making the process easier for these people, but their reasoning is based on greed and self interest. Amendments like equal pay or removing power from employers over the visa are not something they'd support but I'd argue are critically needed. Of course we can find labor in the US. I am an example of that. But I also recognize that I was born here, like almost every American, thanks to my immigrant ancestors. We should afford those who want to do the same the ability to do so. Now, I do want to bring up something else that I discussed with a friend of mine who recently got his greencard: A lot of H1B workers are working abroad. This is not something I knew about. These are obviously not workers who are trying to immigrate here. So my comments don't so much apply to them. Anyway, the system is super broken. I just don't want to see us screw over potential immigrants in the process of trying to make it better. We can make it better for those of us already here AND those who wish to join us. Equal pay and transferability would go a long way for that.
@@AgentOrange96 until we have our own affairs in order and our economy back on track, there should be no immigration, period. Every time there is excessive debt and inflation, immigration should be paused, and this should be common sense already.
I love this take. People are blaming indians for trying to improve their lives, but not the corporations who are exploiting their dreams for cheaper labor. I think that from now on, new h1b visas need their minimum salaries raised to 150k to 200k, because if these are truly high skilled workers, they deserve that. Also, they should not be tied to their employer, that's too much power

These employers know they won't complain, won't quit because their existence is fully dependent on their customer.
This is my take too. Been in this industry since 1998, and I saw it back then! Today it's much worse and they should not be exploited like this. If they are needed so badly, they should have rights like everyone else. If not, then they should work TAX FREE.

What a strange country... where students get hundreds of thousands of dollars in DEBT to pay to study and then hope to make it back with jobs which pay so much that in the end the employers seek outsiders to do those jobs! Think about that!
Employers aren't forced to do it, this is a fundamental misunderstanding. They are doing it because it makes more money, if they can get H1B workers for cheaper than those they currently have they will switch to those too. It's literally just greed, not a consequence of student debt

I personally witnessed a former company abuse the H1B visas. I guess by law they had to post the job physically at the job so what HR did was print out the job description and post in a dark corner of the office. I happened to find that place and kept tabs on those jobs. The company didn't hire American people, nor did they post it on the internet, then they hired an H1B indentured servant. @@matteoceriscioli4715Absolutely. H1b is meant to fill short term supply gaps. If you are high skilled, it provides you the 2-3 years required to move to an Eb1 visa (green card for outstanding researchers/industry professionals). If you don't make the cut, you return to your country. This is how the system worked 20 years back (of which I was a beneficiary). Now, the $65k salary floor is so low, that it attracts much more supply than demand, and most of these folks cant make the minimum requirements for EB1. So they stay perpetually on HB1, and the companies keep exploiting these folks as Mr. Sanders explains in his speech. Here's another spillover effect. These folks now apply for another Green Card category called EB2, which is now flooded. For certain countries, EB2 has a wait time of 40years. Just imagine that. I know folks who have been in the states for 20 years, their kids are Americans, their whole life is here, but they loose their job and that's it. IMO the increase in the income floor is a welcome change. Income, though crude, is still a measure of skill if calculated by different jobs and location. DOL already has a system to do this. BUT the most crucial change would be to make the green card process merit based. That will allow the truly high-skilled to bypass the H1b, which can then be used for short term labor shortages. America still attracts the high-skilled talent and I mean top 1-5%ile researchers, and H1b is not abused.

It is bipartisan in terms that the people aka voters from both parties agree with Senator Sanders on this and other things too, but some Dems and the entire Republican party elected officials are for H1B visas because their owners demand it so, voting is an illusion and as long as people put party over Country or policies over rhetoric, and start voting and electing REAL AMERICANS to Congress to represent the people instead of corporations and billionaires, things will get a lot worse.

Until we ensure OUR college graduates have jobs first, no.
Seems you did not get the message:
- Hiring foreign workers for low wages undercut the american workers bargaining power for jobs and wages.

Overly educated and living paycheck to paycheck generally means bad choices, laziness or complacency, and/or bad degree selection. I almost regret getting my marketing degree because it isn't as valuable as a STEM degree but I'm making it work and absolutely not paycheck to paycheck
@lukas______ i have a stem degree, graduated with a magna cum laude (3.91 GPA), and i can't get a job. Making the right decisions isn't enough anymore. I've been "Just grinding" for 7 months now.
not everything comes down to a problem with an individual's choices. there are collective problems too @lukas______
Bernie Bernie Sanders, you are beloved & we hold you with high gratitude.
thank you sir, one of the few good politicians we have.
Thank you Bernie Sanders
Thanks Bernie. I interview people for work, and it infuriates me that my company looks for candidates abroad instead of people in the States. We don't bring in H1Bs, though. We hire remote workers from Europe. The practice is equally ridiculous. It takes us a LONG time to find a candidate we're comfortable with, all while I interact with people socially that I would love to bring in for an interview.
Both are practices that absolutely need to stop.
@@odelin543 WTF he said nothing of briing forced. He just sait it isd strange that it is happening.
Yeah all while charging 3times higher tuition for international and restricting them from working...
Capitalism
@@atherzaidi5871 Right! There has to be ways to optimize that though!
Amen!!! Bernie speaks the truth, we are not stupid! Thank you Bernie... it feels like you are the only one fighting for the American people and speaking common sense. 💙
I love this man.
Thank you Bernie..I am so tired of the wealthy coveting what little money I and millions of Americans like myself have left . !!! As the great Ted Kennedy said as he was fighting for the American people while he was dying of a brain tumor..." WHERE DOES THE GREED STOP " ?
This is great. Most of us know all this. Now let's fix it already. Too many in Congress are on the take. We must hold them accountable.
Decent pay is not something Musk and Vivec want to hear. Like taxes it is avoided
One job was a Senior Software Engineer listed for $140K. The person (H1B) who was hired said he was being paid $60K (after I showed him the image of the original job posting he later found another position that sponsored him for more and left).
Please protect H1B visas. These visa holders contribute significantly by paying substantial taxes and seeking a better quality of life.
They pose no harm to America and contribute positively to the country’s economy and society.
Why don't they return to India to make India great again
Thank you senator Bernie, always speaking for the people of America. I’m grateful for the financial benefits resulting from the approval of Bitcoin ETFs. Thanks to your support, I am earning a consistent weekly profit of $3500, irrespective of economic conditions.
Same here, I believe the Bitcoin ETFs approval will be life changing opportunity for us, with my current portfolio made from my investments with my personal financial advisor 1 totally agree with you
YES!!! That’s exactly her name (Audrey Lauren. ) so many people have recommended highly about her from Wyoming
Bots lol. Bernie is not behind bitcoin
I’m a long term investor, I withdrew my profits of over $61,000 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She is my family’ personal Broker and also a personal Broker to many families in the United States, she is a licensed broker and a FINRA AGENT in the United States.
Thank you for your service, Senator. Thank you for fighting for us. ❤✊
Yes, yes, and yes again. As an IT worker I've had my job taken away as well at 600 of my co-workers and given to people in Costa Rica who was paid 45k dollars a year. This should NOT be allowed to give American jobs to overseas individuals.
100%
H1B is for foreign workers within the borders of USA. Outsourcing (hiring workers who reside outside of US borders) is a problem that I have been affected by as well, but it is orthogonal to H1B issues.
The H-1B nonimmigrant, whether full-time or part-time, must actually receive hourly wages or an annual salary totaling at least $60,000 in the calendar year. The salary must be paid “cash in hand” and “free and clear.” It must also be paid when due.
As a business why should i not hire someone for less who will do the same job as you? Or so you feel entitled to a job just because you were born in a place.
@@kunal-ko -- I'm not sure whether you were replying to me. But just to be clear, I was replying to another poster who said something about companies paying foreign workers substantially less. I was merely pointing out that holders of the H1-B visas are paid a minimum salary, which is now over $60,000 a year. As long as you're hiring someone who's eligible to work here, I agree you should be able to hire whomever you wish.
The exploitation in the tech and entertainment industry needs to be talked about more. From those being exploited in the US and foreign countries.
Thank you Bernie!

Love Bernie
I wish Senator Sanders would live forever. We need him.
always watching out for us.. thank you ..Bernie
For that we grateful to him, but if don't spread his message and elect people like him to office instead of electing the same shitty candidates again and again while expecting a different result, we are doomed.
H1B should be reduced drastically. There's no shortage of talent in America.
Nailed it. Primary anyone who disagrees.
Bernie Sanders for president.
We tried.
'Maybe H1-B visa workers ought to be paid exactly as much as domestic workers. if they are the most practiced they'll still be wanted.
Also, please bring in all the lawyers. Many cannot afford lawyers in this country and are denied justice.
Lawyers have an artifically induced monopoly; it's not like other industries.'
Why is Bernie the only one talking about this? It really matters to the American people today!
Why is Bernie the only Senator in the room (almost)?
Because he's the only one dumb enough
@@worlore1651your ignorance is no excuse for spreading stupidity
Yeah Bernie! I'm an American Engineer with Masters degree applied to Tesla many times to less than Master degree qualifications, turned down immediately in most cases.
The man, the legend
Love you, Mr. Sanders. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This problem should be better resolved under Biden not under trump
As a person who worked in the US as an H1b after my PhD, I love this man and what he stands for. Everything he said is correct and what any logically thinking person should stand behind.
What do you mean? If you used h1b it means that it was useful to attain your goals, wasn't it?
@@matteoceriscioli4715yea. Some people seem to have no stand and quick to bite the hand that feeds. The process that benefitted you must have been useful for you otherwise there wouldn’t be a path for you to utilize your phd in States you’ll have to go back whichever country you are from without h1-b.
@@Sevencoins7Wrong, he could have stayed with a higher salary and better conditions.
@@Sevencoins7The abuse is mostly among remote hires from India. As international students who graduate from top universities in the U.S., we need to go through the lottery process with these Indian slave IT workers, for the actual R&D positions that are actually facing a talent shortage. That for sure is a loophole that they need to plug.
