Living in a Pandemic: How to Transform Depressive Thinking - with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche

  • As the Buddha said, “Our lives are shaped by our minds; we become what we think.” In times of constant negative information about the pandemic situation, our minds tend to focus on negative ideas, chewing them over again and again, but we can learn to recognize that the thoughts and stories that appear in our minds do not necessarily match reality. Through awareness practice we can learn to make friends with our negative thoughts and find some relief from the anxiety and fear they provoke in us.
Translation of the TH-cam Premiere stream with Mingyur Rinpoche provided by Tergar Meditation Community. Audio streams are available in French, German, Indonesian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Czech, Chinese Mandarin, Thai, and Tibetan.
You can watch directly on the TH-cam Premiere stream, and open a separate window with the translation in your language.

    10:22
13:44 suffering is aversion and craving
16:25 in life many use aversion and craving to achieve things
Instead we should use wisdom, love compassion, awareness Which is all inside of us already
17:00 instead we give credit to aversion and craving
    18:00 decision of I don’t like / nervous system
20:11 sound meditation can’t sleep or relax from noise
Is based on decision of mind something is bad and overtime nervous system will adapt to this
Can work in future, outside noise, inside noise, etc
TBf works for sleeping w light on too
24:50 the fear / resistance to something is worse than the thing itself
26:11 like SE he acknowledges that thoughts come with sensation in body, influence of NS and body to thoughts
    Not just thoughts influence feelings
26:50 awareness of the sensation in body from the thought, ware ness of thought itself, awareness of gap with no sensation, etc
This awareness is the support for the meditation stand on in this type of subject meditation
Much like how focusing on breath is the support for object meditation
    27:25 subtle hatred = aversion
    Strong = hatred
33:20 the opposite of aversion is love kindness compassion
So when we are with our emotions and sensations
We are not averting anymore = subtle hatred
= instead now no longer averting = its opposite is now present, we are embracing the emotions being with them
And That is love kindnes. compassion
33:37mindful allowing of aversion itself is also kindness love and compassion and forgiveness
We are mindfully choosing to caring for the feeling of aversion as well
    rather than mindlessly averting automatically
28:20 4 parts to destructive thoughts, overwhelming emotion, depression, etc
And as you take away these parts one by one, the -- will lose its footing on you
30:11 guided meditation for anger, depression, dark emotions thoughts, etc
Using love, kindness, compassion, wisdom that is inherent in all of us
38:20 if feeling overwhelmed by the emotions, thoughts or sensations then go create space first
    34:33 the wisdom within us
40:50 recognizing the emotions, knowing what they are and that they’re here is the wisdom
    40:17 distractive thoughts
These are just opinions and we can choose what we believe and act on
they aren’t what define us, just as our sensations aren’t, we don’t react based on them we choose who we want to be
42:00 after we get this love compassion caring kindness with ourselves from within ourselves
From there we can then share with others

The meditation you did at the end was very helpful to step away from the aversion and the aversion of the aversion I was feeling. Be well.

Thriswater, Avoid watching negative news channels. Meditation reprogames the mind and gives relief from stress-depression quickly. Enter the following on Google search " Vipaasna 10 minute anapan meditation english video" and follow instructions. You can use the video sound for a few days and then do this simple meditation alone. Sit on a chair, close your eyes be still--try not to move and focus on the in coming and outgoing breath at the entrance of your nostrils. Lot of thoughts will come but after a few days they will reduce and you will feel relaxed. Do the above meditation for 15 to 20 minutes early morning and if possible at night.. The free Vipaasna meditation is practiced all around the world.

Just as when peacocks wander in jungles of lethal poison,
Although there are extremely beautiful medicinal gardens,
The flocks of peacocks do not delight in them,
But instead are nourished by the essence
of the lethal poison; Similarly, when the heroes enter the jungle
    of cyclic existence,
    Although there are beautiful gardens
    of splendid happiness,
The heroes do not become attached to them,
For these brave-minded ones thrive in the jungle
of suffering -verses from Dharmarakshita's Wheel of Sharp Weapons(the mahayana mind training).
