  • A four day is what we call the four days off that come during my fire rotation. Recently You Tube did a Day in the Life event. But I wanted to try my own spin on it. We get the most accomplished on the Home Stead during my four day. These are some off jobs we did around the homestead while we still had Dirt Perfects CAT 304 mini excavator rented. We also spread some stone with John Deere 755 compact utility tractor as well. Hope you Enjoy!

    Glad to see those positive test holes cause I can't wait to see that 755 digging a pond! Back when I did excavation full time our primary niche was building ponds so any mention of a pond dig gets me interested. Nice progress and good video 👍

      Depends who is doing the work!! Just means they are working too slowly...
      My dad was a Yorkshireman, they tell you exactly how it is, if I ever made a cup of tea that was too weak taste he would often say "that is as weak as dishwatter " 🤣 Another one was " you haven't the foggiest what you are doing " ( you don't have a clue what you are doing)
      Yes, there are hundreds of these local sayings all over the UK, they vary from region to region.....

    You have what I consider the ideal traits to be a good fireman. Cant sit still and always have to be doing something, mild case of OCD, outgoing personality (always talking to everyone), willingness to jump in and help others, and you're able to adapt and overcome when things aren't working according to "plan A". Great traits for just being a good guy also. Keep up the good work and stay safe brother.

    Hey Captain I just wanted let you know how much I am enjoying your videos. I am a long time retired suburban fire chief from central Ohio and glad to learn you are a career firefighter. Remember we all were privates at one time. Good luck on your career. I have some hilly recreational property down in Hocking Co. Ohio where we used to hunt ride ATVs and enjoy all kinds of outdoor activity. Now at 81 I mostly sit on my butt and watch others have fun. I still enjoy target shooting on the range we have built down there. So I will just watch and enjoy your videos as your tackle you various projects, good luck.

    Oh! What fun. Four days of boy toys.. you got to run the 755, the mini-ex and the loader. My neighbor would say, “It don’t git better’n that!”
    Glad to see you got a lot of loose ends tied up. It’s often those sniggling little details left undone, that keep you from clearing projects from your list.
    You mentioned not wanting to spray around your property... just coincidentally I have a story about neighbor Donnie (the best housewife on the block) that is related:
    At one time, I was into organic gardening. I even subscribed to Mother Earth news! Well, my garden was along the alley that separated our home from Donnies. It was a summer day after a good rain... the sun was beating down and it must have been 150 degrees with the humidity and all... I was in the corn patch weeding when I hear this roar across the alley and start to smell something pungent.
    When I stand up I see Donnie in shorts and a pair of flip flops, holding a gas operated fogger that is spewing a total thunderstorm of clouds in his yard. There isn’t much wind. But, what little breeze there was, pushed that cloud right toward me. So, I beat-feet a retreat and watched as it enveloped my garden and yard... and although it was hard to see through the mist... I could hear that Donnie was still fogging his way toward the alley.
    I could almost see the look of helplessness in the eyes of all those, aphid munching, ladybugs that were dying in my garden... so, I hollered at Donnie. He stopped spraying.
    When the cloud settled, I met him at the garden. Our conversation went something like this:
    Me: What are you doing?
    Donnie: I’m spraying for mosquitoes. Mom is coming over. We’re going to cook burgers this afternoon.
    Me: What are you spraying?
    Donnie: It is some really good stuff. You have to have a license to buy it. My dad got it at work and brought me their fogger to use.
    Me: Do you know what chemical it is?
    Donnie: No, but it kills all bugs. You are supposed to wear a gas mask when you fog it. But, I didn’t have one. My dad said as long as I stay upwind I should be OK.
    Me: what about the people that are downwind?
    Donnie: Well, I figured that by the time it got to your house it would have thinned out.
    Me: Well, it didn’t. Look at these corn leaves. They are covered with it. I was in there working. Would you do me a favor and stop spraying?
    Donnie: I looked around and didn’t see you. Boy, your corn is tall! But, at least you won’t have to worry about bugs in your garden!
    Me: Thanks Donnie. But, please let me know when you’re gonna fog again.
    Donnie: I will. But now, I have to spray the front yard!
    I went inside, showered and took the wife and kids to the creek. It was going to be another year before I could resume my organic garden quest!
    Cap’n... just wanted to let ya know, you are not alone!!!

      @CaptainKleeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @sassafrasvalley1939

      Captain Kleeman Donnie was a janitor in a cheese factory until he injured his back. So, he bought a Video Rental store that was being run out of business because the owners never thought DVD’s would catch on. They had a fine selection of VHS tapes!
      Him and his wife worked real hard to update the inventory... then BlockBuster opened a big new store in a nearby town. That undercut their prices and because they were independent, they got all the new releases a few weeks late. But, they scraped and fought until they were able to sell the business. Loss or gain... don’t know. Afterward, his wife went to work for my daughter at her Wal-Mart store. She eventually got into management. Donnie took a job in a Convenience Store where he worked until he passed away last year. His kind heart and honesty left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him!

    In his last update, he had to stop working on construction to go lumber jacking and milling the boards to continue construction.
    A good chance to see a Woodland Mills band-saw mill being used. ( price wise, one of the lower priced options for such, yet quality wise still quite high. )
    One of the benefits they offer, start with the basic setup and add options later on as desired / needed. ground based to trailer based for example, the trailer is an option you can put the ground based to be on.

    Anything acidic will kill weeds for those who want to know how to kill them without using round up or such chemicals which basically work on using a acidic molecule to make their product work but they throw in loads of chemicals to do it.
    So something like vineagar or if you pickle onions then onion juice and mix a little salt in with water solution will do the job just fine and all things that we as humans can consume with no adverse effects :)
    Of course if you have the stone and time to pull it around then thats obviously just as cool.
    Mate you're picking away at jobs and that is the most important thing you can do, sometimes we have to make a mess before we can have it looking beautiful, your land is no different but it will ultimately look like your own version of paradise.

    • @CaptainKleeman
      @CaptainKleeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ricky bobby 78 we do use the vineager sometimes for smaller areas like in the cracks of the rocks and stuff. Would take a lot for the whole drive but it would do the trick for sure. And you’re right about that, just have to keep picking away at it. We will get there eventually!

    • @trickydicky78s3
      @trickydicky78s3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CaptainKleeman Agree 100%, only time i would suggest vinegar solution or vinegar and salt on large scale application is if or when you hand spray on the spot and you have a teenage child you want keeping busy and quiet for several hours lolol
      If ever you do pickling of onions it is worth while keeping the juice and let it build up , does exactly the same thing really as it makes use of a by product that would or most likely just gets poured away so at least it gets used in a productive way on its final journey.
      Reason why i mentioned salt as well ( this is for those not in the know captain obviously is ) the salt attacks the roots of what you spray and kills them the vinegar or acid solution part burns the foliage so it's basically a two way attack which on weeds that are troublesome and repeatedly grow back because burning the foliage isnt quite enough on its own and killing the roots is required on top.

    Explain the Back Step term from your day job.

    • @firecaptaintom6670
      @firecaptaintom6670 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It means he's a firefighter as opposed to a driver or company officer, a lieutenant or captain typically. The driver drives, we point, he does the hard work.

    • @CaptainKleeman
      @CaptainKleeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VideosByAl haha, what fire captain Tom said. It’s an old/tradition term from when guys use to hang off the back step on the way to the fire, those are the guys that pull and flow the line. The term backstep stuck around. We obviously aren’t hanging off the back any more, But the job is the same. Hope that makes sense!

    The challenges of controlling water run off and erosion are endless. About the time when you think you have a solution and a pathway it does its own thing. All you can do is know its an active project, cleaning out ditches that have silted in or got to deep add rock of different sizes as you are doing . From the videos I believe you are being a good steward of the land and controlling the elements you can and doing it well. We humans cant stop erosion, some of the most fertile soil is from deposits of sediment off the nile river. I love the weed control method on the driveway. Anytime we can limit a chemical that wasn't made by Mother Nature I believe does us all well.( understand that i use chemicals daily so one less is a positive step)

    Was wondering about the septic regulations that close to the river. In my county in Missouri the only building codes period have to do with putting in septic systems. The officials come out and witness a "perk test" and then tell you how , and where , and you don't have a say . and we are no where close to a river. Total cost for a finished septic here is about 5 grand. You are one of the hardest working dudes that I am aware of. Looking forward to seeing your project go forward.

    • @CaptainKleeman
      @CaptainKleeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      stashwax roller that sounds pretty similar to here. Depending on the soil type we may have a few options as far as the system goes, but most everything around here is going to end up being a sand line system. And we have to be 50’ away from any part of the tank or bed as far as proximity to any water source
