    He obviously had some sort of crystal ball looking into the future. It does seem music these days is focused on a lot of things other than how good the music is. Focused more on the videos or dance choreography when playing live and to be honest music these days is rubbish compared to older generations!

    • @rubydeep1191
      @rubydeep1191 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      if u think music nowadays is rubbish you're not looking in right places, we have hundreds if not thousands of new genres since the time of The Smiths and home production has allowed millions of artists to create music without needing to go through all the loopholes in order to become an artist like back then. There's far more music being produced nowadays than there was then, and all of it is rubbish?

    • @criminally_vulgar

      I don't think that *all* music these days is bad. Plus, I don't think that all "old" music is that good either. However, I think music was more real back then. Of course, these days, there are people who sing very real songs, but if I listen to the music that's in the charts, or on the radio, I find it's all too similar, not necessarily because of the artists, but because of record labels and producers. These days, it's far more formulaic - have a metronomic beat, four different chords, and an auto-tuned vocal; everyone sounds the same.
      In terms of whether or not music is actually *better* , I'll admit, I haven't been dazzled by anything post 1995, however, I am a very hardcore Smiths fan, and I don't feel the same way about *anybody* , as I do about The Smiths. But my knowledge of most music post 2000 is based mainly on what I happen to catch on the radio, so I don't think I can truly generalise all modern music, based solely on what's most popular.

    He's being ironic, this is all done with a touch of humor, he's simultaneously saying that they don't approve of music videos because they're not "real people doing real things" and they're just "pantomimes," which is what he says is the main draw of The Smiths, yet he's being very pompous and inaccessible. You can see him almost smile as people take what he's saying seriously without noting the irony of it. I believe that is the joke here

    I dunno, I think he's being quite genuine here and was later forced or highly advised to create videos, as he has a message to spread and videos would have helped. He's always said he takes almost no control in his videos but he still 'performs' in them. November Spawned a Monster being a very classic video of this example, and shows Morrissey engaging in the production of it in a very serious tone

    he's very awesome the way he phrases his responses, love it, and he's absolutely right about no complexities - be basic and simple when trying to come across as real, and thats when you get the true emotion the feeling the song is supposed to convey...what they felt when they composed/wrote...no fancy tricks to attract mainstream or gimmicks. i agree but i think music videos were great in the 80s (some - such as true faith, nov spawned a monster, feel every beat (LOL), tomorrow, there is a light...etc) i want to ask the same interview of him today and see what he says - videos today are complete shit! i hope he'd agree

    • @ShainaKarasik

      Well music videos for pop music was rather new during the 80s. It was very coordinated and meaningless. Just a bunch of dancing around miming lyrics. It wasn't until the late 80s and early 90s that we started to see deep meaning in videos.

    It's now a futile argument. Videos are cemented into music like a tenacious thing. The Smiths were/are extremely seminal and Morrissey has always been eloquent and perspicacious.
    Let's not forget that music videos were originally called 'promotional' videos, because that's essentially what they really are
