Mythbusting a Miracle Cooling Machine: Basically a Sped Up Sweat Box- Arctic Air Pure Chill Review

  • This 'Arctic Air' Pure Chill machine is trying to sell itself as an air conditioner, but it's actually a cleverly disguised evaporative humidifier, like you'd use in an old house in wintertime. Ridiculous. Here's a bit of testing and science fundamentals to help you avoid re-branding and other marketing tricks in your home. For the testing, I used the temperature/humidity datalogger HOBO MX1101.

Kind of reminds me of a swamp cooler which just about every home or apartment has in Albuquerque. I remember they said to leave the pump on first for a while cause the pads have to get wet enough for it to start cooling. I think if you thoroughly soaked those pads and then freezed it, It might do a better job.

They do not have air-conditioning and when it’s 78° outside it’s 90° in that office with 90% humidity 🤣😂. The temperature has been unbearable for me these last few days so I just ordered a couple of similar Homedics devices to put on my desk (I work from home) and beside my bed. Bong coolers and evperative coolers do work. Yes they are bascily just humidifiers. In a lot of climates they work quite well. Also if you have a home that is more open like you find in more developing countries they can perform well with out much of the downsides. This is better then a peltier based cooler and some types of portable air cons.

If you sit in front of the machine it helps some but it's not very effective. You probably can make something similar yourself. Get two wire clothes hangers and twist them so they can hold plastic bottles. Fill them with water and freeze them. Then insert the bottles in the hangers and hang them from the grill of a fan. Turn on the fan.

Corbett = Ozone machine alert CPAP!!
I just got a CPAP machine for sleep apnea. Most people including my Parents use a machine to clean their CPAP equipment. I'm certain they all have "lights and lasers" that produce Ozone to "clean." A video about these machines for cleaning something people breathe through would be awesome! I would love a PSA about it!! This has to be bad considering you breathe directly through the equipment that is probably releasing formaldehyde!!

My mom said the mask and tube smell funny for about a day after cleaning it all with the Ozone cleaner (UV light type machine). Other the ozone is staying in the mask and tube or it's causing other reactions with the plastics. It just sounds like a dangerous idea to me.

Good to know. I bought one of these last year, and my cat hated the sound it made, so I never really used it. Unfortunately, I no longer have the kitty, but I was thinking of maybe using this to cool off in this last bit of summer, and I'm glad I came across this video before acting on that. I live in a 5th wheel, and that seems like it could be a really good way to start accumulating mold. I just moved out of a small little caboose that mt stepfather had built into a home, but it didn't have working AC and it loved to accumulate moisture, so it was quite literally totally infested with mold when I moved out. I really don't wanna recreate that type of shit show over in my new place.

Actually this is a new technology of evaporative cooling. The difference is that it does not use ozone-destroying refrigerants but relies on water. It is not designed to cool off an entire room. It basically is useful in hallways, bathrooms, & supplementing AC in one's house. For people who lack the funds to buy central air, this can help take the edge off a person. If it takes the humidity out of the air, then that is a very desirable effect because it is humidity that makes people clammy & miserable.

    • @HomePerformance

I bought mine at Walmart many months ago, and it worked very well for a week or two, then it started leaking. Since I bought it on the previous Christmas and did not use it until the following summer, I could no bring it back since it was past the 90 day policy at Walmart. So it was a loss, and is very poor quality I see. I also bought some similar units, but different construction from ChillWell, and those are a bit more expensive but work very well in this desert environment. These seem to be good quality after two years or so.
