Jenna Ortega on filming 'Wednesday' dance scene: "I ripped off Siouxsie Sioux"

- With 'Wednesday' - the new television series based on Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family - hitting Netflix next week, Jenna Ortega (who plays the titular character) joins NME to discuss working with Tim Burton, what drew her to the character and being inspired by Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as teasing the “very big” season finale.
MGM, the production company behind Wednesday, confirmed to NME via email that “strict COVID protocols were followed and once the positive test was confirmed production removed Jenna from set.

It kinda blows my mind that her dancing was improvised by herself, and not choreographed. Her dance moves were SO appropriate for the character she was portraying and really impressed me as I watched. And she did it while sick!

She didn’t improvise the whole dance, it was planned and choreographed by herself but I’m guessing it wasn’t long enough. She said that she improvised parts for ‘filler’ between moves.

it’s likely, considering jenna is a huge star and so is catherine zeta jones (who plays morticia) and on top of that, the addams family is practically a household name and wednesday addams is well-established in pop culture.

It's crazy how she did the choreography herself because she was able to reference the dance from the black and white Addams family, Pulp Fiction dance, able to capture the 80' gothic dance style and make it a very Tim Burton vibe. Adding the fact that she was sick during filming yet she absolutely slayed. Like that's some dedication and professionalism. Jenna Ortega is going to be one of the most sought-after stars of this generation and she deserves all the attention she's getting
Let’s just hope she’s wise with her role choices and doesn’t flush her career with some shit movies.

She absolutely owned the role. Couldn't have picked anyone better. Didn't think I'd feel this way either. Grew up with the 90s films and Christina Ricci but honestly i think she outdid even her. Can't wait for season 2
@Yoda People, l hope, DO realize that Christina Ricci is the evil teacher in this series. But, as good as Jenna Ortega is, to my critical senses, it is Ricci who has cornered the market on spooky girls. Ricci has a deep essence of "macabre" in her performance, along with those "dead" eyes and she was superb at projecting the character of Wednesday as a budding psychopath. I remember the critic reviews when it came out in 1991, and Ricci was uniformly the character that the critics praised to the skies, even more than Angelica Huston, who was no slouch as Morticia! Ricci OWNED both movies.
Regardless of my opinion, I enjoyed Ortega's performance as the series went on. Initially, I was not that engaged in her character.
The fact that she knows who Siouxsie Sioux is, gains my utmost respect!
i suspect tim burton put her onto SS. It seems like his era of music what he was probably into. Helena looks a lot like her.

@@quollachu SS is not a goth dancer she is one of the biggest 80s music artists of the 80s. she isnt famous for her dancing thats just how she moves on stage. she is famous for her music & her looks. goth dancing is more what the fans do. Tim would be her whole guidance through this project on a daily basis for 8 months so what makes sense is that he would mention his own major influences to her playing this role. That is his music era. Thats what mentors do.

I think she did an amazing interpretation of Fossi in her dance as well. It was a noticeable influence but she definitely made it her own.
Completely agree with you that her Fosse inspiration is seen. When I saw the dance I thought of Suzanne Charney in her HQ sequences from Sweet Charity. Fosse genius at his best IMO.
Well done Jenna in putting this dance together and doing this when symptomatic with COVID.

She did an excellent job on the show. Wednesday is such a great character and Jenna did her proud. Plus her dancing was magnificent, even more so considering she had Covid.

Tim Burton wanted her to use Siouxsie as a template. I doubt Jenna knew who the band was due to her age.

My wife said the critics did not given it high marks. We loved the series. The critics couldn't be more wrong. Wednesday had great lines, funny with that dry sense of humor. Supporting characters were great, especially Emmy Myers with jubilant candy expressions, which were polar opposite of Wednesday. I am sure that I'll watch this again. Great clean entertainment without the stress of blood and murder. OH, and let's not forget the best Gothic dancing that even Michael Jackson would enjoy. (It reminds me of my daughter. :) )
I always considered Wednesday, and Pugsly, as hispanic. Since their father was named Gomez I just assumed they were hispanic. Anyway, Jenna did a fantastic job. I always liked Christina’s portrayl but Jenna was perfect.
Original show they were Castilian Spanish decent ...this show made them Mexican descent which is Indigenous × Spanish

Wednesday was hispanic ever since the old color show, she didn't make it hispanic but she did make Wednesday stand out more as hispanic.

I am old enough that I saw Siouxsie and the Banshees live in concert. I still remember my girlfriend at the time singing along with the song Peek-a-Boo.
Show is a strange concoction, but Jenna as Wednesday is over the top great - as she mentioned Thing is a perfect foil and co-star. Fun to watch. Up to episode 7 probably do 8 tonight! Sure hope there will be a second season!

My dad directed that Lena Lovich video that was cited here, ‘lucky number’ was the track- I’m in it dressed as her as a tiny baby. Thrilled to see it is inspiring to this day :) although he should be getting royalties for it which would be good cause he has devoted his life to making fuel cell energy for communities and he needs funding!
i have to say there was something that felt very familiar about Wednesday... then saw this with the actress as herself and holy shit she looks like a younger Helena Bonham Carter.... I guess Tim has a type. Just needs to find a mini Johnny Depp and we have a new gothic dream team.

Lisa Loring's Wednesday did a great dance with Lurch in the original. There's a great video of her playing Blitzkrieg Bop and dancing to it.
Yes and no, obviously the song in the video that's here on YT was not in the actual tv series. There are several different versions here on YT with the scene of her dancing but each time it's a different song. I was hoping that Miss Ortega would have done a little bit of that in her dance sequence, but even though she didn't it was still great nonetheless.
@@aliwantizu So, yes she did. Watch the sequence again. You will see that she does about 2 seconds of the "Wednesday dance" about half way through.

That dance really was crazy good, the head tilts are what got me the most. And I love the Siouxie Sioux comment, I was a teenager in the 80s and modelled my look after her. I still listen to them today.

AS a kid in the 60s LOVING the Addams Family, and living in San Diego,..., we all took for granted that the Addams family were multicultural, I think that is what made me love the TV series- Gomez was right off the boot of Italy,..., or maybe Romania? LOL!!!!! The show was frontier breaking- nice to see the modern version finally caught up- thank you casting!

Wednesday has always been Hispanic. Her father is Gomez Addams, of Spanish descent. The surname actually is that of the creator of “The Addams Family “, Charles Addams.

I love the Addams family show back in the 60s and the Munsters so to me Jenna Ortega and all the others did really great , I was not sure if I was going to like the show because how shows has been done lately but everyone did a great job , Loved all the characters and it was a great pick of people to play the parts hope they all stay for the other shows and I loved the color the Wolf Girl Enid Sinclair ( Emma Myers) brought to the show she was like Wednesday opposite and Joy Sunday the siren

Jennas dancing in that scene is reminiscent of the physical performances of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
If all goes well the great Siouxsie Sioux is set to perform live later this year in the U.K. & we'll just have to see where things go after that. 2013 was Siouxsie's last time performing live on stage & on that occasion she was accompanied by legend Yoko Ono for a duet, with Sean Ono Lennon & Talvin Singh being amongst the many others also performing on stage during the duet. Hopefully Siouxsie gives us some new music this year. Nice to see Jenna Ortega giving her a shout out.
