Penelope unravels her late father-in-law’s shroud (which I once saw someone say meant the deceased couldn’t cross the Styx, but I can’t find the info on the Wiki for this). And her line of “cause I’d rather die, than grow old without the best of you” could have alluded to Penelope planning her death if the suitors beat the challenge. This queen waited 20 years playing peacemaker in a world where being inhospitable to a houseguest could upset a disguised god. If their roles were reversed, the plot wouldn’t even change. Penelope would fist fight Polyphemus and Poseidon to get home too.
I mean, Penelope IS a Spartan, she absolutely would fist fight Polyphemus and all of the other people Odysseus had to deal with if she was the one at sea for 20 years
