i was in the booth the night when larry played this for the first time, straight off my reel to reel edit mix, before it was pressed. the floor was bouncing!
Uhmm... you do recall that the floor used to really and actually, literally bounce...(Stadium speakers in an authentic garage. )that's when the colored tissue paper would rain down on the floor causing the masses to resemble a bunch of drunken astronauts trying to walk on the moon. Needless to say, any substance one consumed would, along with the dizzying lights, complete the effect. The term "Sultan's Jerk" was the name given to the revelers who mastered this other worldly slip and slide, hop and scotch, twist and twirl, Olympic performance. Of course some would end up on the floor still dancing, never missing a beat.
Better days . . . the Paradise Garage . . . the Nickel Bar . . . the Loft . . . . the Shelter . . . and Club Zanzibar---Newark, New Jersey. The best era of time EVER!!! I loved it all, and would trade this current life for that life in a heartbeat!
this reminds me of a time in New York when the big clubs were in full swing and the energy of the city was creative, pulsating and carfree and you felt on top of th world. We lost that and a part of the city died with that time but the music lives on......
The Disco from the first half of the 1970s is mindblowingly attractive! There should be Early Disco Nights all over the place. The youth of today could finally smile and dance with each other!
Eddie was the best the finest, and this songs were the best music that existed. people just don't understand this kind of music, and how deep it goes, down to your soul. THE PANKEY 5
Every time I play and listen to this song, it immediately put me in a day dream position. In that day dream I see me as a 8 year old boy, watching my mother play this song over and over. It’s such a good feeling. Feelings that’s gone today.
I remember Larry looping Eddie's long note followed by the guitar & piano solo's. Maaaannn, we used to stomp the floor off of this at The Garage!@planchaone... Don't forget "purple haze," "magic mushrooms" & "rush" Those were the days! Thanks for posting!
The Dopeness of Larry Levan was the next jam was doper or just as dope. The man took you on a journey 2 or 3 days a week for over 12 hours, 52 weeks out of the year for over a decade. None of these fools today can’t even hold a candle to the man.
Yessir! I lived in CA but $100 you could the 12"s wholesale at $2.50 -$2.75 apiece. I still have the sealed OG copy of Doug E Freshs The Show on Reality, plus B-Boys on Vintertainment etc.
hey all, loved walter, we were friends and worked together at downstairs records. he was my favorite dj, speant many nights with him in his booth at galaxy 21. but walter didnt do this mix, i did. bobby busnach. put it out with downstairs records in the late 70s. i also bootlegged the original fusion beats. great to find this here. i dont even have a copy any more.
Few "underground" pre-disco classics inspire so much enthusiasm and loyalty to 2016 as this 1972 icon of a dance classic! This song not only kept Kendrick's classic 60s Temptations' voice in the clubs, but also was innovative in myriad ways to affect the next 40 - going on 50 years of house r&b dance disco music - thank you for posting this truly wonderful song!! DAVEDJ also, while this was being enjoyed in Manhattan from such clubs as The Loft & Paradise Garage, it was also burning up the dance floor at Pete's Place, Le Directoire & La Boucherie in New Orleans!! This man's voice rules in 60s Motown, 1970s to now, 2017...
This is a great R&B track. More though, this is an awesome disco record. Everything that made the first few years of disco awesome is represented in this unbelievable song. The last 90 seconds nearly makes my head explode. At least 4 to 5 years ahead of its time. When I say I love disco, this is the kind of music I'm speaking of.
What DJs back-in-the-day would call a 'plate'. The envy of other DJs, to make/have a version of a hit no one else had or could not get in a store. Sing it Eddie! What you say to that!!!!
Remember Francis, Dario, Steve, Micheal, Jelly Bean Francis & Dario wud play music that u wud never expect like Beggin by the four seasons Francis wud play that as his last song who wud expect that even though it was a great song & Dario wud play James Brown Sex Machine & smack right in the middle play Led Zepplen whole lotta love.
Eddie and his crew did a excellent job recognizing which way the wind was blowing and had the talent and ability to produce. Eddie was out front. This band was excellent.
Oh, lordy, those bongo drums!!!! My friends thought I was too button-down preppie for my own good and took me to the Continental Baths one night my junior year in college in 1973. I remember dancing to the instrumental break of this song next to dudes in towels and one screamingly elegant drag queen who was off on some other dance planet. By the time those horns came on at the end, I was in ecstasy that I remember vividly to this day. Bathhouses and drag queens, you bet. Those were SOME days!
Oh hell to the yeah! ! This awesome classic is straight FIRE I had to call the fire department LOL! Do you hear them coming? A trip down memory lane good old days 4REAL! ! !
Thank you posting. Best remix of this ALL TIME CLASSIC! Garage, Shelter and Melons in the E. 16th St. office bldg., never forgotten and always in my heart! Namaste.
I used to love those backyard barbeque's in the summer time in Newark,NJ back in the day. We used to get up and dance all night long. No fighting just nice fun,a little drinking, playing cards, joking, laughter was everywhere and the music was great. I remember those days so clearly.
SHANIQUES! ZIGS! THAT' WAS MY HOME. Who were you hanging out with? Did you know Phil Baker? What was the name of that club on Central and Harrison? DOOPS!
Wow, this classic takes me way back when I was a sophomore in Hs. This song was relevant and focused, primarily because the times of all women started to change. What I am attempting to say is, the women's liberation movement of the 70' s was in full swing. I can also, say, back during that time women marched frequently trying to change the realities they faced, sexism and discrimination. Great era, and Eddie definitely focused on the trials and tribulations with this song.
this was one of my favorite songs I use to listen to before going to the Paradise Garage. See youngster you did not just go to the Garage you had to get warmed up first, your steps had to be right on time.
where was the paradise garage? i remember "the garage" i don't remember, i know it wasn't far from the loft! garage had biggest speakers i ever saw back then! always had great dj's back then, not as good as dj walter gibbons but good
Hey Remember the Mudd Club on White St Clubs were already changing into Patti Smith, B 52s Talking Heads and Sex Pistols but were mixed with Eddie Kendricks and a lot of earlier club music before changing into total punk but even then they played these great Clubs songs mixed together.
great comments.... been to the garage many times, and listened to Larry. even worked there a few times. there was a cat that would spin records at Pegasus named Lindsay.. this dude was so fast, he could cut "never" over and over, with out missing. then let it play "never try to change"
Never had the opportunity to see the Temptations nor Eddie Kendricks when he went solo, however he was my all time "favorite" singer if I must choose one!!! But this song here still to today gets the crowd moving and dancing especially if they know anything about music...ijs
Feelin this mix alright. I sing this to my WIFE in 2010! Girl you need a change of mind...Let me try and change it...I know I can Ooo Ooo I know I can! Thanks Eddie , Peace & Blessings RIP to my favorite Temptation Seriously Thanks for the Post Discopatrick SS
I was on the boardwalk on the roof when Larry dropped this. Yeah he played this every weekend but that rooftop was the best floor to dance on even though the speakers were low. That Garage! Very fortunate to experience, live and dance in that space and time. Never again!
back then when were trippin the music would sound soooo goood, you couldn't stop dancing, it was like you lived every record. lets not forget the shrooms it was joy and happiness, glad i was able to experience it in the loft, love saves the day
LARRY AND THAT UNIQUE SYSTEM OF SOUND.WHO EVER HAD THE PRIVILIDGE TO LISTEN TO THIS UNDER HIS MASTERFUL SKILLS, WHENT TO HEAVEN AND BACK.YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.
I've never heard a song like this before or since. If any song was designed to induce prolonged states of ecstacy this is it. This is far more powerful that anything else that I've heard in disco or any other genre. Pure ecstasy and I can say that since I was in that parallel universe called punk rock back in the day. If anything, this song heralds the beginning of disco for many and really let's the world know: Oil up and get out the glitter boys and girls. Here comes the Seventies. . . . :D
Ansar al-Zindiqi very well said !!... Disco's premier song and sound... yes, even before the awesome "loves theme"… I think this is disco's very first true song… Not Proto… Pure.
This brilliant track was played at the Deja Vu in Indianapolis right along with Teddy Pendergrass , First Choice, Barry White's"Love's Theme" and Earth Wind and Fire's "Shining Star". It sounded AMAZING. I don't know if it was the first extended disco track or not; I heard that crown goes to Double Exposure's "Ten Percent". What I can tell you is there was "disco" before DISCO the short-lived national phenomenon and many of the records in that early era had fantastic soulful vocals and were just awesome. One of the easiest and best ways to familiarize yourself with early era dance (early to mid-'70s) music is to check out compilations like The Original Salsoul Classics. The sound of Philly kind of ruled the dance floor in the era. Eddie hit pay dirt with "Keep on Truckin'" (another 2-parter like this one) and then "Boogie Down". They weren't all huge dance club hits but I also loved "He's a Friend", "Happy", and "Goin' Up in Smoke" as well as the Motown-sublime "Shoe Shine Boy".
There are still places/parties to hear real DJs perform. And there are some great young DJs who know how to play music like this, and new works coming out. Jimmy DePre from Philadelphia comes to mind as a DJ. Come to Evolution this Sunday in NYC for new house music in the classic mode.
i was in the booth the night when larry played this for the first time, straight off my reel to reel edit mix, before it was pressed. the floor was bouncing!
So, you’re are saying, this was your Remix? I have been looking it’s producer for years. Never been given the real credit it deserves.

Funk, Jazz, and disco all rolled into one, the man was a true master
This tune is considered as the first Disco tune that started the genre!
Yes, and “Win, Place or Show” by The Intruders...both in ‘72 😀💕
