When you do outdoor endeavors you often sweat a lot. That is why concerns about high sodium are silly about these products. You need to replenish your electrolytes, the most notable being sodium.
I believe the RichMoor is supposed to be added to boiled water, not the other way around, similar to most Wise products. Yeah, it's inconvenient, but it makes it taste a lot better than trying to put hot water in the pouch.
***** Exactly, which is why I would choose the Mountain House. I typically just make my own meals and prepare them in aluminium foil lined Ziploc bags. That way, I control how much salt is in each meal.
Nice video, good reviews. I thought I would let you know why Mountain House has so much salt. Your right, it isn't the healthiest unless your backpacking 20-30 miles a day. Then the salt is a god send. It replaces the salt that you have sweated out all day. It's nice to have. For a day hike though, I would go with one of the others.
Nice video! Couple of things, if your going to list stats like salt keep them all up on the screen at the same time so we don't have to remember everything. Also when hiking salt is good...just sayin.
I was really happy to find your video because you actually compared the same flavor of meals. Thank you for showing so many details and comparing so many brands. It keeps people like me from finding out the hard way what not to buy too. Buying on a budget this sure helps.
Awesome comparison dude. Thank you for taking the time and spending the money to do a proper review of all the mainstream dehydrated meal brands. I like a quick easy meal on the trail and this helps a lot.
I tried the backpackers pantry red beans and rice and the Jamaican style jerk rice with chicken. Both had a high taste of sodium but you got 600+ calories per bag. Might be why the sodium is 550mg per serving. I think mixing them with real chicken cuts might work. I'm still just going to buy dirty rice, beans and cut up my own chicken, beef or turkey and cook them myself. I see cooling as an extension of outdoors not how fast I can cook an eat.
Great Video The Mountain House Stoganoff I have from, MFG Jul 26, 2013 only has 760 mg of Sodium per serving. Being this video is from Mar 2013, maybe you changed their minds on the recipe XD
Hey, not sure if my comment even posted before,, but as I said, this is one expensive taste test you did, and I appreciate your opinion! Thumbs up video buddy!~~John
Thanks, Tool Dude! This was a good review. I'm also sold on Mountain House and shall probably remain so. But I'd like to find other brands that I like just to mix things up a little. The other brands are definitely cheaper than Mountain House. I just need to try some of the others out. I wasn't too impressed with what I got from Backpacker's Pantry on the two items I tried. But I'd be willing to try some of their other stuff though to see if I liked those.
I had one experience with Backpackers Pantry, and it was recent. It was a vegetable stew with beef, which oddly enough isn't on their website anymore. I guess it was discontinued because it was a huge letdown. It was very bland and even after 15 minutes at an elevation below sea level some bits of carrot were tough. I'll give the stroganoff a shot. Also, I look for high calorie, high salt content in my camping dinners because my lunches and meals are low in sodium.
Nice video as always, Tony!!! I may have to start trying out some of these prepared meals and see how they taste. Maybe one of these times we'll do a taste test...prepared meal vs Owl's cheap specials! LOL!
I really like the Jetboil and would recommend it. However, there are other types of stoves (wood, alcohol, pellet) that may be more suitable for your needs. I suggest you check out the discussions on Hammockforums d o t net for information. If you want to know more about the Jetboil stoves check out my video titled "Which Jetboil Sol is Right for You?". Thanks
Interesting Natural High is a brand by Richmore have you tried the Wise Camping food? Seems to me the Richmore packet must have had boil in a pot directions to have it simmer as I bet it's Dehydrated not freeze dried.
If RichMoor is cheaper it wouldn't be a bad strategy to have some on hand to give to others in a survival situation. That way you are still being charitable towards others but you can eat the good stuff yourself. Great job reviewing!!
i don't care for the ready made meals but buy #10 cans of meat, beef, chicken, sausage and add it to rice or pasta and spices i'm used to.the ready made's seem to leave a after taste.i do take a few freeze dry meals in a bag that i have tried and can live with for days when i just want to boil water and eat.i take a zip lock of minute rice and add a few spoons full to bulk out those meals.sweet and sour pork and chicken teriyaki work for me.
I plan on just buying Harvest Right freeze dryer and making my own food... Not sure, but they say the machine will pay for itself in a year or so... even with the cost of electricity and mylar bags...
Hey Tony Steam hot! No touch Steam! Steam very Hot!! LOL!! Great video! I always liked the Mountain house So I cant wait to try the others aswell. I would love to see more of these vids ! Don't forget Hawks Vittles and Packet Gourmet!
Just listening to the prices of these freeze dried meals from about two and half years ago, makes me realize how much inflation is kicking our arse. I know I can surely see the change and YES, I do believe in it.
shouldn't more calories place #1, Dont mean to hate but in a survival situation you want more bang for your back if you know what I mean, more calories the better.
I just did a search for "Natural High Freeze dried foods" and it came back as "Naural High by Rich Moor". So doesn't that combine two of your tests, one good and one very bad ? Now what ?
I just saw this video for the first time- it is over 3 years since its been made -but Beef Stroganoff is supposed to be 1 of the best freeze dried meals -ironically -BackPackers pantry doesn't even offer that flavor anymore -bummer . I wonder way. ok good vid though.
Thanks - Just alone on the economy and all the hocus pocus CON- GRESS is doing, I definitely will begin to buy some of these products- Thanks very much
mountain house and natural high are made by the people. if i remember right. one is a higher end. i dont remember which one. i am done with all of them company's! beef stroganoff is the only one i eat if i buy from a store. they will keep you alive.
When you do outdoor endeavors you often sweat a lot. That is why concerns about high sodium are silly about these products. You need to replenish your electrolytes, the most notable being sodium.
Tony, thanks for taking the time to make and post this video. I appreciate the work you put into it and found it very interesting.

Thanks for the compliments, Jeff. The knife is an Uncle Henry by Schrade.

Good taste test Tony. I ate lots of Mountain House back in the day and liked it just fine but it's good to know advancements in flavor have been made.
If your going to rely on this stuff you will need the added salt and calories.

Thanks for doing this, Tony. You're appreciated!
they must have changed the recipe for the MH one, i have one manufactured in Jan 2014 and it had 760 mg sodium per serving
Excellent review, I really enjoyed this one. TY

I plan on just buying Harvest Right freeze dryer and making my own food... Not sure, but they say the machine will pay for itself in a year or so... even with the cost of electricity and mylar bags...
Good suggestion. Thanks
The green stuff is probably just parsley flakes. I use it in cooking all the time just to make it look better. No discernible taste.
I dig you flat wear, what brand is it and where did you get it.
Thanks for the video. Good review.
thanks for the info have a great day!
What about WISE foods? version. They are far more bang for the buck for sure.
are the "richmoor" and "natural high" both created and sold by the richmoor food co?
Excellent video thank you...
Like the jacket by the way.

I just did a search for "Natural High Freeze dried foods" and it came back as "Naural High by Rich Moor".
So doesn't that combine two of your tests, one good and one very bad ?
Now what ?
It's not meant to be healthy meant for survival.. sodium helps with one not cramping.. I prefer mountain house me and my wife half them
haha a Canfield's price tag! You're probably from nebraska or Iowa
