    You can fast double click the black (the button that has supersource under the shift option) on the preview and this will bring up the supersource on the preview. Double click works as shift+select

    I contacted BM EMEA offices London to ask about the Fan noise, any solutions on the horizon etc.. I will get back to them mid October, there was no news as of now, This fan noise will make me go towards the entree level TV Studio, as 2 M/E non 4K on the used market are at the same price levels as the new proct(At least). Let wait and see.....

    For PC/MAC out HDMI and just using standard (HDMI to SDI) is a hit and miss, this is because standard converters don't have built in scan. To fix this get a HDMI to SDI cross converter (aka scan converter) like Decimator Design MD-HX and such. That way you can convert your PC HDMI signal to a stable HD-SDI 1080i/60p 30p ect. Standard converters are mainly used for bi-directional conversion in your video chain where the signals are already on stable industry broadcast signal chain formats.
    For instance maybe on stage someone is giving a power point presentation and you need to run a long cable to a switcher. Since HDMI cable run is limited you need to use SDI. If you do this with a standard converter you will have the same problem even if you have good cables. Just setup a cross converter near the PC and run SDI to your switcher. You will have no problems.

    Previous comment is 100% accurate. Decimater md-Hx is the solution. Unless you want to pay $5,000 for an AJA FS2.

      I'm late to the party but in 2018 BMD released the Mini Converter UpDownCross which should fix the problem of the ATEM not having scalers on the input. It's cheaper than the Decimator MD-HX which helps if you need several.

    I have a 1 M/E which has more HDMI inputs so what I plan to do is to hook the program out to my 2 M/E and use my HDMI inputs on the 1 M/E. But problem is I don't get a black border around my HDMI picture, I don't get a full screen like my SDI source.

  • @edt1138

    Now I see the benefit of pointed stick.
    That is pretty cool. Its a shame you can't get all of the inputs working.

  • @Videovl1
    @Videovl1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you want to use your Mac as a source you can use a "Displayport-to-hdmi" cable (not thunderbolt!) and then a HDMI to SDI converter. Use the single HDMI input for another source...

      It works for me on a 2 m/e in combination with PlayBackPro Plus, it might be the software then...

    For your computer HDMI to SDI try a Datavideo DAC-70. You can force the SDI out to 59.94 which is the problem. Most HDMI to SDI run at 60 and the new chips in the 4k just will not allow it on the SDI ins.

  • @psient

    ATEM and no built in scalers seems a big problem on the BMD forum. Price point seems to preclude scalers. I admire your savvy and see this review as a comment that here at least, savvy isn't enough.

      ***** For what it is worth, just this past week I implemented this switcher into our ministry, and needed to convert several HDMI sources to SDI. Using the BMD HDMI to SDI, I had zero problems; including from a Mac Mini and then several video cameras being fed HDMI over ethernet extenders.

    My problem when connecting my Laptop to an BMD Intensity Capture card is that is seems to implement HDCP (high definition content protection). There seems to be a lot of ways of circumventing this but I still haven't tried any. My immediate plan is to by a HDMI splitter (cheapest) and see if it will work.

      The Monoprice 108204 Mini HDMI Splitter will also remove HDCP and weighs in at around $34. It has saved me in a few situations where HDCP has caused problems in an academic environment.

    great video! we have three 83 inch smart tv mounted in portrait mode behind the talent in our live streaming studio. Can it be possible to send a video loop in portrait mode to these three smart tvs at the same time thru the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K? The looping videos will be use as a background to the talent. The video will be rotated to portrait mode in Premiere.

    So Lon,
    Do you think that the fan noise would affect my production team in our room while we are filming the football and basketball games? Also did your canon cameras work, because that is what we will be using.

    • @TyroneFrazierIII
      @TyroneFrazierIII 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** So we probably will be good. I heard that the newer Canon cameras work better with Blackmagic Atems. We are using Canon XA10s and they should work with the 2 m/e. The super source will be good for engaging the fans. The fan noise shouldn't affect us because our commentators won't be in the production room, they'll be in the press box. Hope you can find a better solution to meet your needs though!

    I also use Blackmagic atem 2. As far as the fan problems my control master is in another room. As far as hdmi-sdi converter get one from blackmagic and its guaranteed to work. As far as everything else, budget, etc... Quality has a Price. And let me tell you you will not be able to fix anything up for cheaper than this that manages 20 input channels.

    • @ishizukahikaru643
      @ishizukahikaru643 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got nothing to do with Blackmagic as a brand for video signal compatibility. The main reason why if your not getting signal from SDI/HDMI is most likely not using (scan converter/up down cross). I've used numerous of brands AJA, Decimator design, Barco, VideoPro, Panasonic and so on and so forth without any problems. Whats your main issue is your converting a signal that isn't the correct format to the system setting format. Example if you send SDI cam signal of 1080/60i to a system setting of 1080/60p you probably will hear 1/2 CH audio embed with black picture. You can fix that easily by using a Cross converter that will change your 1080/60i out cam to 1080/60p format that your system recognizes. I work professionally as a video contractor for concerts and corporate events. And knowing these BASICS is a must, or you will screw up a gig and wind up with fines. This guys advice is so dumb and can easily tell he never worked on professional gigs where contracts worth thousands to ten thousands of dollars. Someone who doesn't know the basics like SDI/HDMI signals you can bet I'll never hire as they will just become a liability and make the company look bad infront of a client. Here's a basic list of video signals used with HDMI/SDI. If you can learn this GO HOME and quit the broadcast industry. It isn't for you!
      SD Format ( SDI )
      525/29.97 NTSC、 525/23.98 NTSC、 625/25 PAL
      HD Format ( 3G/HD-SDI )
      720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60,
      1080PsF23.98, 1080PsF24, 1080PsF25, 1080PsF29.97,
      1080PsF30, 1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97,
      1080p30, 1080p50, 1080p59.94, 1080p60

    Hey Lon, thanks for the review. I am doing a live production which will be streaming online (think video game tournament). I was looking at maybe getting the ATEM 2 just because of super sourcing, as I will be running at minimum 3 sources on screen roughly 90% of the time.
    I'm not a fan of the fan either (it's loud just on your review!), so I was wondering if you have any suggestions for super sourcing?
    My set up will be 4-6 cameras which will be hdmi to sdi (can't afford SDI pro cams yet), and then sources for the video games which I'll probably have to convert to SDI as well.
    My backup plan was to just build a monster computer, then get 2 Black Magic quad deck recorder PCIe card as it allows up to 4 SDI inputs simultaneously. Altogether I'd probably have 8-10 sources switching back and forth with 3-4 sources being used on screen max at one time. Not sure even if a monster computer with enough specs can handle up to 8 sources at one time, but like I said I would've preferred to maybe get the ATEM2 but wasn't sure if there was a predecessor to it or alternative. Keep in mind I don't need 4K, just need HD (preferably 1080i for the stream but 720 would be passable).

    • @jefftennis3907
      @jefftennis3907 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose my budget varies.
      I was either going to buy 2 quad deck recorders from BMD and use it with Open broadcaster or Wirecast as my switcher, or the ATEM2 and just connect it to my computer and stream it. I was also going to need a bunch of hdmi to sdi converters as well which was going to drive up the price.
      ATEM2 Is basically $4,000 which in itself is already a lot. Would I be willing to put up with the fan if it meant comparable products that can super source are more expensive? Guess I'd have to live with that compromise.
      Two quad deck PCIe recorders from BMD is almost $2k. Then factor in all the converters I'd need to buy for what I need (Component to SDI, HDMI to SDI) I'm looking at around $3.5-4k, does not even include purchasing a gaming PC that would require the power to do all of these tasks (record, stream, edit, outputting to a separate monitor for multi-viewing sources).
      The ATEM2 is roughly 4k, but considering it can do all the processing power and I'd just have to output it to my computer to stream it, I wouldn't need to buy a monster gaming-like pc with all the heavy specs. I'd still need to buy the converters still (HDMI>>SDI, Component>>SDI).

    The computer thing is probably a limitation of your HDMI to SDI adaptor.

  • @voldamane
    @voldamane 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is a step backwards in the same way Type C was a step backwards from Quad or an F15 is a step backwards from an F4 fighter.
    Here is the best analogy I can make, and I am not being insulting, just pointing out the truth. You liked your old 1965 Mustang (a G3 automobile), and you see they sell a new model, the 2014 Mustang (a G4.5 automobile) that is faster and has lots of cool features you desire. So you buy it. Then you find out it won't run on leaded gas, that its significantly higher torc requires higher driving skills to master, that your mag rims saved from the old car are no longer useful, and that the new Mustang makes a growl rather than a low rumble when you rev the engine, and worst of all, every time you shove an 8 track tape into the iPod connector it fails to operate. What is worse, you try and change the spark plugs in the new Mustang and discover that this is difficult.
    I am not arguing against you returning the switcher. If you had bought it with a clear understanding of how a technology such as this integrates into your own production process, and as part of a movement to compatible equipment, you would have been pleased with it. The ATEM 4K in the right environment is a wizard tool for boosting billables and is a good way to expand your client base. For your operation it is probably just an expense that may not generate enough revenue to justify, and requires an upgrading of your operation.

    Hola!! Tengo una BM Studio proHD, como puedo hacer esas funciones, alguien me podría ayudar se lo agradecería mucho

  • @voldamane
    @voldamane 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    HDMI is an issue simply put, because HDMI is completely ill suited for the production world - it is a consumer format for connecting to TVs and to allow it to run at all content providers like movie houses insisted the format be terribly constricted.
    Your issue with HDMI>>SDI connectors is each jump is adding a potential difficulty to your engineering chain. For any digital switcher to work (at least at the price point of the BM) every signal coming in has to be clean. With a switcher that has more than 60 cross points capable of 8000 or more digital connections it does not take much to make the unit inoperable.
    You can work to clean your entire input chain though and see how that goes. Each HDMI source must first be clean of HDCP. By law, if an HDMI source sees HDCP is shuts itself down, and the ATEM itself can detect when this happens and will also go dark.
    Next, every unit was be framing the same. That means the HDMI output must be 29.98p 1080 for each source, or else the BM will not know what to set as its master source. So check the camera going into your converter box, and your converter box out to the switcher.
    There are four other problems that could be affecting you, but these are the big ones. The truth is - this switcher is a plug and play dream come true, but it is not all perfect. The Blackmagic is a professional device pushed down to the lower end, not a consumer device pushed up to the upper end - so there is a learning curve in employing it.

  • @voldamane
    @voldamane 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your ATEM problems sound like a range of issues.
    Fan noise: Nearly every professional switcher with multiple MEs generates fan noise. An old Grass Valley 1600 sounded like a helicopter. Broadcast panels, racking, and quiet fans are used to fix this.
    Broadcast panels are too expensive for you, but basically you use a panel and put the guts of the unit out of the way.
    Racking in a fly-away case is an easy solution and not that expensive, plus you will protect your investment. Rubberized racks shoot the noise out back where, properly positioned, you won't be bothered by it.
    Loud fans can also be replaced with quitter models. This is a fix BM may pay to have done for you if the problem is absurd, but it is something I have done with Dells when I used them for production - rip open the case, pull the fans, and put quiet running production fans in. Really though this is a tech fix.

    Sorry. I thought you were professional (as in, earn a living at this and are seeking to buy stuff that lets you make more money). My remarks are only applicable for the professional market - say live wedding or high school sports for pay to Tour d' France. Please accept my apology.
    At the hobby level (or the church services crowd who do wonderful things on a shoe string) I would not go much past ATEM Television Studio (which indeed, since it does not have to crosspoint a 20x3x8 matrix is much more forgiving of consumer quality gear). It is also quieter since it has something like 1/80th the memory and 1/30th the processing power of the 2/ME 4K, which means less heat.
    You can get the same effect as the 2 M/E by using the reference sync to cascade two units together, then having one setup for re-entry and throwing a computer in the mix to do your DME squeezes. It is no Kahuna, but it keeps all your old equipment in play for less cost than a 2/ME.
    Good luck whatever you do. And do not disparage amateur work - like college sports there is great stuff being done in the amateur world all the time. I recently helped a church upgrade to 4k and a jumbotron with a 2k bump to the islands. None of their people has ever made dollar-one in their lives doing this, but what they are doing is spectacular.
